Rashan Gary is fast.

The boys have run some more 40 yard dashes for Coach Tolbert. Gary clocked a 4.58. Insane speed for a 290 guy. He is simply phenomenal. Chris Evans ran a 4.62. Higdon hit 4.48 and Ty ran 4.75+. I don't have any receiver times yet but will find out and share.

BUT these times are all consistent with previous times. Evans has big time wiggle and is quick as a hiccup. Higdon is a one cut and go with Homerun speed. Ty can likely train down to a 4.6 but I dont see him cracking 4.5s. Gary should be under scientific investigation to see what the hell he actually is. #freak

I know a couple of NFL scouts and they said they don't trust the data because the time tend to start at first motion. So if a prospect move their hands/head before they get off the block, the time would start automatically.

They used 3-4 of their team scouts stopwatches and averaged the time to make it official for their 40 time on a prospect. Everybody including the Pats does it.

FWIW, they had Devin Funchess at 4.5 range at the combine which is closer to his pro day time.

Not to be negative Nancy but I think I remember Peppers posting times at Michigan much faster than what he ran at the NFL combine.

Except for the two or three guys that hit the 4.3 range every season, guys are always slower at the NFL combine than their "recruiting hype" speeds, even the electronic ones. It's possible that they slow down a bit, but it's more likely that the NFL system is the most accurate available and is a better measure of "actual" times.

RB is one of the most intriguing positions to me this fall. I want to see how things shake out in a post-Wheatley world. Unfortunately I think our RBs may yet again be let down by the OL play. We'll see.

My two cents, I have Evans, Higdon, and Samuels in that order. Can't wait to see if Hudson gets some play there too. I don't really expect him to, but you never know, right?

Is this a different set of times than the spring combine that Harbaugh tweeted out months ago? Because Gary was getting basically the same speed then (I don't remember the number but 4.58 sounds right).

If Higdon's 4.48 is legit, wow.

Does Tolbert do these often? I mean, I'm kind of asking if Karan only texts you when he does the best. :)

Thank you for the info though - much appreciated.

Last time they ran Higdon was slower than Evans, was still a 4'6? Well see on Evans, he is great in space. He has not shown much between the tackles, and on outside runs. The outliers being the blown assignment, and the bowl game. Brian pointed this out just this past week. You guys need to temper your expectations on him. He has a lot to prove yet.

Is putting on weight to try to become a three down back, this added mass is not helping him as far as speed is concerned. This happens quite often to RB's that put on mass too fast. Meanwhile Higdon has already shown he is the better inside runner, has also put on weight, and appears to be getting faster. Ty is the best blocker, and also has a three down skill set, with the prefered size, esp in certain situations. I felt many times last year that the ball was being forced to Evans too much. I hope that is not the case if he continues to struggle in situations other than him getting some space to use those moves. He just gets brought down by that damn back foot too often. Ty, and Higdon are going to play, and play well, more than I think you realize.

play both sides of the ball.  crush opposing defenders.

jk, but man, that is some serious speed for a dude who weighs 290.  serious.

Imagine if it was Gary instead of Vincent Smith in the outback bowl against Clowney... I don't believe in the big bang but new galaxies would have been created in their wake.

Bruce Feldman does a piece on the biggest physical "freaks" in college football every year. Rashan Gary checked in at #5.

The Wolverines are listed by some preseason magazines as having only one returning starter on defense, but that’s misleading. They have a bunch of guys who, like Gary, played extensively last year. While playing on a loaded D-line, Gary had 27 tackles and five tackles for loss as a true freshman. Expectations are sky high for him to be one of the nation’s biggest breakout players in 2017. Jim Harbaugh certainly stokes those expectations when he tweeted out some off-season workout numbers that spotlighted Gary’s athleticism. On it, the 6’5”, 287-pounder was listed as timing a 4.57 in the 40, fastest among not only Michigan D-linemen, but also the linebackers (a 4.63 was the best among those). Gary also vertical jumped 31 inches and broad-jumped 9’6”. The other number that was truly stunning at his size was the 6.70 L-drill time. At the 2017 NFL combine, the fastest time for all D-linemen was a 6.85, and you have to go back six years to find a D-lineman that clocked a fastest time than Gary’s 6.70. Sam Acho ran a 6.69 and he did that weighing 25 pounds less. The fastest L-drill time among all Wolverine DBs was a 6.79 and among linebackers was a 6.89.

A couple guys Michigan will see this year:

PSU RB Saquon Barkley at #1 & TE Mike Gesicki at #13. Gesicki being that high seems like a reach, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Franklin and PSU staff are overhyping their guys.

OSU LB Jerome Baker at #17

Indiana DT Nate Hoff at #30

Cincinnati DE Lyndon Johnson at #34

Myles Garrett is 6-4, 272, and had a 40 time of 4.64 at the combine. He was the first overall pick. Rashan Gary is 6-5, 290 and has a 40 in the right ballpark. And at least two more seasons at Michigan.

... the Michigan State Police have ordered Michigan to maintain log books on Rashan Gary. Nobody is allowed to operate a huge semi-trailer truck that fast. Follow up at eleven, Bob.
