Rashan Gary: best DT in Rivals Era?

Submitted by Jim Harbaugh on

Rashan Gary: the best DT in Rivals era? The beloved Mike Farrell at rivals seems to believe so. Hype train has left the station for 2016 and beyond. Sorry for formatting on mobile.

EDIT: Hype train has been gone from the station for a while now...only has stopped to refuel. -TheDirtyD

I am trying to imagin a KC-135 Stratotanker getting into position to refuel a train - hype train or otherwise - and the resulting mental image is....different. I just hope we try it out on a flat, featureless landscape first and see how it goes.

That being said, those who were finally willing to hop on the hype train for Rashan Gary once he officially signed his paperwork were indeed tragically late even then, as we know.

Why, and I don't think Hackett - No, I know he would not have - mentioned "incentives" being brought into play near the end of his recruitment if they did not take place, are these schools willing to take such a risk?

It was not too long after Clemson won the '81 NC that the reasons soon became clear. Instead of just fessing up and moving forward, Danny Ford, then Clemson H.C. was pissed that another conference coach had the nerve to  turn them in. Don't they put themselves at risk when this occurs? If, for instance, it were brought to the attention of Rashaun's mother, what would be her incentive for not becoming a whistle blower? I am missing something here. Reaching out to one of the more intelligent to explain to me what it is that I am not picking up on. Thanks

Lorenz said: Auburn, Clemson and Ole Miss are 3 of 4 teams that you don't want to be going up against at the end of recruiting a big time recruit.  You can read between the lines and I'll leave it at that.  Florida State is the 4th.

As for being a whistle blower, maybe she passed on what she heard to whom she thought could pursue it further (Michigan, NCAA).  Moreover, unless she has harder she'll be the one getting the blowback; she probably hurts her and Rashan by going public.

He stated Gary is a top 10 prospect of all time in the rivals era (closer to top 5). It is pretty crazy to think we potentially have an Adrian Peterson or Vince young type impact player.

You read the post wrong. He is (in Farrell's opinion) the best DT they ever saw with Ngata second. However he is a middling number 1 prospect ever with AP, Vince young better than him.

can not be the word you meant?  He mentioned about four or five names ahead of him.  Which, puts Gary squarely in the top five or six ever regardless of position.  That does not say 'middling' to me.  Top 25 all time I would say is not even middling, when you consider the number of prospects graded.  So I would say that Farrell thinks he is special even amoung all time # 1s regardless of position.

Edit:  I guess Farrell did say 'middle', yet after naming just a few I can not imagine that he meant 'middle'.  It is not like he even mentioned 10 names above him.  Being in the top ten, relative to all #1s evaluated is in the elite of the #1s, not the middle.

Yes sire you are correct based on Farrell making his point.  I did edit after I realized I did make a mistake.  Yet even in that I still can not see how Farrell can mean 'middle'?  He only metioned a few names amoung others.  That imo would put him, still in the elite of the #1s terriotory.

Farrell’s Take: Gary is special, that’s why he’s No. 1. Is he the all-time best No. 1? Nope, but he’s in the middle somewhere and you have to remember we’ve had guys like Adrian Peterson, Jadeveon Clowney, Percy Harvin, Vince Young and some other amazing talents as well. But as a defensive tackle, he’s the best I’ve seen and it’s an impressive list behind him. He can play outside or inside, on the nose or outside the tight end, it doesn’t matter he can be effective. His best spot is in a 4-3 defense playing a 3-technique but he will be moved around.

He's probably the first player I can think of that could possibly leave after his true sophomore year and be physically ready for the league.

Oh, and ICYMI, Peppers is totally too slow and short for the NFL.  I think the young talent evaluators say he's totes slow.  He needs his full five years for his body to mature for the league.

This enthusiasm unknown to mgoblogkind should take a step back, take a swig of your favorite alcoholic beverage and wait for the kid to show that he truly is the real deal once he competes against players who are as good, strong and fast as he is on Saturdays. Michigan hasn't had great success in getting their players to match the hype praised upont them coming out of high school. Injuries, adjustment to the college life, other factors could impede him. But yes, I hope Gary is one player for Michigan that dominates like we have never seen before in a Wolverine Jersey and he makes everyone around him better.

It seems the only thing Rashan Gary doesn't have going for him are unrealistic expectations. I mean, let's starting hyping this kid up! He's lived in the shadows for too long!!!
