Quick impressions from today's practice (for Mott donors and players' families)

Submitted by Heiko on

First of all, many thanks to Drew Hill for donating to Mott at the spring game and then donating the practice tickets to mgoblog.

Today Michigan held a practice at the Big House that was open to players' families and to Mott donors. Brian was there, too, so I'm sure he'll make some mention of his impressions at some point. Here are a few of my own impression on the position groups.

Offensive line:

  • Mealer was indeed running with the ones at LG. Kalis took snaps on the second team.
  • Chris Bryant was in attendance, but in a t-shirt and a pair of enormous crutches. Here's to hoping he recovers quickly.

Quarterbacks:

  • It was all Denard and Bellomy. Gardner spent the entire time running with receivers.
  • Bellomy made some good throws. He had a nice bomb down the sideline to Jeremy Jackson at one point, but the pass was dropped.
  • Denard still has a few issues setting his feet -- a couple of his passes were reminiscent of last year where the ball would sail over the receiver's head or be too low to catch, but overall he was much more decisive with his reads.

Receivers and tight ends:

  • Darboh and Chesson looked good during drills. They definitely have the size to compete in the Big Ten, but I guess the concern is whether they're battle ready at the moment.
  • Gardner is a huge target. His route running isn't as good as, say Gallon's or Roundtree's, but he looked like a legit receiver. He did have a drop or two, but otherwise he should figure into the rotation just fine. Also, he was running with the ones.
  • Jerald Robinson looked good during drills but had a drop in the situational segment.
  • Funchess did a good job catching passes from the TE position. Once he works his way into the starting rotation (currently with the 2's), he'll be the proverbial "weapon." Physically he looks like a slightly thicker Gardner.
  • AJ Williams can run. He's not as fast as Funchess, but he'll figure in as a pass-catcher and not just an in-line blocker.

Defensive line:

  • The line up of Jibreel Black, Will Campbell, Quinton Washington, and Craig Roh is real. In this package Jibreel is the WDE, Campbell is the 3-tech, Washington is the nose, and Roh is the SDE.
  • On passing downs it looked like it was Jake Ryan, Craig Roh, Will Campbell, and Mario Ojemudia. I can't remember if Ryan had his hand down, but he was definitely part of the pass rush.
  • I did not see Pipkins much.

Linebackers:

  • Joe Bolden made a couple plays I think? I did not pay attention to the linebackers.

Secondary:

  • In general made it really hard for receivers to get open. JT Floyd covered Gardner most of the time during situational stuff and did not allow a completion.

Borges:

  • Lots of packages and motions similar to plays from last season.
  • Called a hook and ladder that was pretty cool. I forget who the receiver was, but the pass was 10 yards deep on the left, and the pitch was outside to Vincent Smith running a wheel route I think.

Did they practice the victory formation this year? I went last year, but was disappointed in the fact that it was more of a practice than a scrimmage. Great info. Thanks for sharing!

1. Hagerup's punts - he was kicking the ball 60-65 yards routinely.

2. Gibbons was Gibbons. Wile has a better leg, though, and the ball just pops when he hits it  (accuracy, wasn't that great).

3. Looks like Broekhuizen will do the kickoffs.

Good stuff. I'm really interested to see the progression of the D line. I think the team's success will be on their shoulders this year...

I am praying he got the dumb decisions out of his system, and it won't matter. I don't expect perfection, but get rid of the really dumb throws please. He is a great young man.

Real information! Thank you sir. I'm really optimistic about Denard's improvement. It's all about consistency now. After watching the OSU game again last year, it's evident that he is capable of making throws with time and when he sets. Can't wait!

I know that Heiko said he did not pay attention to linebackers, but are we still looking at primarily Demens, Morgan and Ryan at LB, and Countess, Floyd, Kovacs, and Gordon in secondary? I am pretty sure we're solid in the back seven, but I was curious as to whether or not that's who was out there primarily (probably obvious that it was in a few cases, but still was curious as to any different combos here).

Also, good to hear about Denard's progess in this offense, and although it has been said that Gardner is the #2 QB, does this perhaps mean that they may sometimes keep Gardner at WR and use Bellomy at QB once in a while anyway? It seems like they must like what they see in Russell Bellomy.

Excellent information, and thank you for sharing.

...with real players on a real field. I'm moist.

It seems that Michigan's undersized receiving corps has gotten big (albiet inexperienced) with the additions of Gardner, Funchess, Darboh and Chesson, no?

Did Funchess line up next to the tackle or split?

He looks good and is a monster target.  That kid looks like a tight end out there.  He's going to make a difference.

Roundtree looks ready to go!  His stop and go was sharp.  Except for the few stitches or scab on his knee, you would never know he had a procedure.

By the way, I'm not sweating over this defense at all.  I think they'll surprise.

Love this team!

On Denard, that's kind of what I was expecing. He's been playing football for 8+ years at this point, he's not going to make a drastic improvement in footwork over just one offseason. But his understanding of the offense should improve immensely. He'll still miss some, just like any QB, but I expect his numbers to be much better this year regardless because of his comfortablility within the offense.

I think an underrated improvement of knowing the offenses better will be Denard calling audibles more effectively based on what he sees in the defenses. There were a lot of instances last year where the defense was giving him free yards with the right play and he just didn't recognize it.

My biggest concern about this team has been Wide Receivers and Defensive Line. After reading this and some other reports, I'm starting to feel a little better about both units.

If Washington and Ash can play well, I'm going to feel a lot better about this year's defense. My fear is that Roh just wasn't big enough to play inside, so Washington was forced into a starting role.

Nice assessment and is funny I said much of the same stuff to my buddy when I got home. Gardner running is smooth and effortless I think will be dangerous a WR at one point.

I was really impressed in the throws Bellamy made, he looks like he could be a very solid and capable QB.

Secondary looked sharp and aggressive I really liked to see.

Denard threw some good balls but I seen some times that wide receivers had to slow down a bit to adjust to under thrown balls.

I had no idea Wormley was as big as he is and was in street clothes obviously.

Pipkens could eat Norfleet for a light snack.

Great to hear that they have options on the DLine. Being able to move people around depending how we matchup will be valuable, not to mention the versatility will provide emergency backup in multiple spots.

Watched GameDay preview earlier today and the big takeaway for me was that the top 5 all have flaws, holes, and/or lack of depth. Contrast this to last year where everybody thought there were 4 too teams and then everybody else makes this a very interesting college football campaign. It's going to be really fun and can't wait to watch them next weekend!

They played in shorts and shoulder pads.

It was warm in there.

Practice moves right along. Bang, Bang from one drill to the next.

I liked the side line readiness drills. Hoke was working one end of the field to the other calling plays to the side line and the coaches and players had to charge out and get in position. There weren't many screw-ups. Guys ran right to their responsibility.

Yes, they practiced the victory formation...a few times!

Devin was targeted a few times. Man, there's no fat on that kid!

I can't wait for the real thing!

Recievers not getting open, either the recievers are not very good and the secondary is looking better for it. OR the secondary is really good and all recievers will look bad playing them. My bet is on number 2
