PSU commit DT Michael Dwumfour to visit this weekend

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

PSU commit and HS teammate of Kareem Walker DT Michael Dwumfour to take an official visit to Michigan this weekend. This is big news because PSU's recruiting class is imploding.

Dwumfour and Rashan Gary are good friends and workout partners as well. That may be kind of important too.

I lived in PA, NY, and CT for quite some time.  My take on CT & NY football fans is they don't give a darn about college football.  They root for the Pats, Jets, and Giants.  PA is another story, although they also root for their NFL affiliates, they also root for PSU primarily.  But, I don't think their rooting interests are so strong that a highly sought out player wouldn't consider another school.  They are not the same sort of juggernaut as OSU for example.

Middle PA worships PSU. East PA bandwagons whenever they're good. West PA is split between OSU/PSU/Pitt.

It has a lot of allure for East PA kids since it's far away from the Philly area schools (Temple, Drexel, La Salle, Villanova) and much easier to get into than UPenn.

The smartest kids usually go to UPenn or Pitt if they're staying instate. Then there's Swarthmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr etc for sons and daughters of rich hippies.

They had a disappointing 7-6 season followed by Franklin firing his OC. His DC and OL coach both make a lateral moves and leave PSU last week leading to instability on the staff and the coaches who originally recruited their class. Add in a couple decommitments and other commits scheduing visits, and you get here. 18-year olds can be pretty fickle, and if they see a bunch of other kids in their class jumping ship or looking at lifeboats, it can snowball pretty fast.

Actually rated almost identical to Henry out of HS near 1000.

Here is a recent profile of him - looks like Brown offered him at BC

http://www.pennlive.com/pennstatefootball/index.ssf/2016/01/penn_state_…

BACKGROUND INFO:
Height: 6-1.5
Weight: 285 pounds
High school: De Paul Catholic (N.J.)
Star ratings: 3* consensus
Commit date: June 23, 2015
Other notable offers: Iowa, Rutgers, Temple, West Virginia, Army, Boston College

STRENGTHS: Dwumfour earned his Penn State offer after a standout camp performance, in which he flashed unusual agility for his size. He's a good athlete with good size who is quick off the ball, representing a good, moldable player at an area of need for the Nittany Lions. ... Dwumfour is thick in the lower body and could add strength to his upper body while keeping his speed and agility. ... Plays with effort and is solid in pursuit.

AREA(S) OF FOCUS: Dwumfour needs refinement in common areas for defensive linemen with priorities on better hand technique and leverage, as well as more strength and consistency. ... a year in the weight room and time spent deeper in Penn State's rotation can pay off later in his career. ... height (6-1.5) works against him but isn't fatal to his chances of blossoming into a solid interior player at the next level.

There are only a few "blue chips" left on the board and most are (1) Gary and (2) a group of DBs.   Most everyone else are guys in the 400s to 600s area which are your high 3*.  Chase Allen, Jonathan Jones, Hudson, Nordin, Young, Uche, etc - these are all 3* star types.

With Levi O probably not coming here, only Connor Murphy seems to be a real chance to come here out of guys rated above 400 or so excluding the DBs like Long / Hill / Fuller.*

I am assuming guys like Boss Tagaloa are not realistic propositions. Dontavious Jackson seems like he will stay south.

If this guy is a great friend of Gary, so be it - get all his friends here who could be competent players.

Rumor on thewolverine is that if he flips to Michigan that locks up Gary, per Gary and his mother. Also this kid isnt a bad football player himself and in 2017 we will need the depth

about Harbaugh wanting to sleep over. In the break betwen the "no contact" periods, Harbaugh has managed to be the lead on every sports related media outlet in the country.

He is basically a clone of Willie Henry in high school. Undervalued, 6'2, 280 pounds, and extremely quick off the ball. He causes chaos in the backfield. Probably going to need a year to get bigger and stronger but would be able to help in 2017 when we have to reload the d-line.

This season may wring the last bit of smugness and entitlement out of the fan base. They are quite demoralized after the last two years.

I wont mind them being good after they serve their time in purgatory like Michigan did since the late Carr years until Harbaugh came. Every program goes through it (Texas, Alabama, USC, Etc) but the fact it's self inflicted makes it sweeter.

I want the entire B1G east to be strong but if Indiana leapfrogs PSU for a few years I'm quite OK with that too.

If Penn State goes 3-9 in 2016 ---- that's an implosion.  James Franklin gets fired.  100% no doubt about it.

Then, of course, PSU will hire someone else.  They may hire another bozo, but there's also a non-zero chance they hire a home-run.

The more realistic scenario is that Penn State goes anywhere from 6-7 to 8-5 in 2016.  They're simply too good to go 3-9.  Besides, 3-9 would be an off-the-charts outlier: even with recent difficulties PSU has had 11 consecutive above .500 seasons.

Penn State has some decent positives going into 2016 & beyond.  (1) They were extremely young in 2014 and still young in 2015: young teams generally but not always improve.  (2) Solid if not elite (top 15-25) recruiting classes in 2014 and 2015, those players will contribute more and more in 2016.  (3) Gradually normalizing total scholarship numbers, allowing more overall roster depth.  (4) A recruiting class, that even in the worst-case-scenario, won't be rated that terrible (worst-case is probably 30th or so).

Penn State isn't really "imploding" as much as they are "treading water."  As a U-M fan, THAT is the scenario you WANT.  For Penn State to get stuck in a 7-to-9 win track for the back half of the 2010s.  Good enough that Franklin isn't truly on the hot seat, but not nearly good enough to be among the elite.

The B1G (Ohio State 2014) just won a MNC in a year where traditional powers like U-M went 5-7 and PSU went 7-6.  That happened despite Ohio State losing a home game to a team that went 6-6 in the regular season.  They didn't need a strong U-M or PSU to make the playoffs.

Even in down years, PSU draws TV ratings.  Even if PSU stinks, it's an asset for the conference when negotiating TV contracts.

No, the Big Ten needs several relevant teams. It doesn't matter whether it's Penn State or not. College football is cyclical. The two teams that really help the Big Ten are Michigan and Ohio State. Outside of those two schools, it doesn't matter whether it's Michigan State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Penn State, Iowa, etc. who are good; it only matters that some other team steps up to fill the void of also being a contender.

In fact, I would argue that having the same teams be consistently powerful is detrimental to a conference. Upstarts and underdogs spur excitement and keep hope alive for players, recruits, and fan bases. You need teams like Clemson, Baylor, TCU, Oregon, Oklahoma State, etc. to poke their heads out every once in a while for parity's sake. Otherwise, if the traditional powerhouses (Ohio State, Texas, USC, Michigan, Alabama, etc.) are the only ones who are ever good, interest wanes for the fans of 115 other schools.

for those of you that watch highlights whenever a recruit's name is mentioned. I didn't play football past the 11th grade and am more of a basketball fan, but I love to watch film to get an idea of the type of players we might end up with if they commit.

I took a look at Dwumfour and I didn't find his tape particularly impressive. He's slow-twitched, actually got knocked back off the line quite a bit, and doesn't appear to have a high motor. The only times I was impressed was in the clips where he was playing OT or OG.

Take a look and let me know what you guys think:

At the end of the day, I trust Harbaugh no matter what, but my guess is that Dwumfour would end up on the offensive line.

Looks like you watched Sophomore tape. Watch his senior stuff. He's a very good pass rusher right now. Obviously needs a college weight program before you talk about serious PT, but he has good hands and feet when he gets one on one match ups. Feels like a Mo Hurst type. Plus if he helps with Gary he is worth it even if he never sees the field
