Potential App State NCAA Tournament Matchup
Appalachian State just qualified for the NCAA tournament by winning their conference tournament and are projected as a 16 seed. A matchup with Michigan is a strong possibility. Are you down for this gimmicky matchup or not interested in reliving one of the worst sports moments in M history? Personally, I do not want to watch that blocked field goal over and over and over again even if that means foregoing the opportunity to exact some level of revenge.
Oh man. I got kicked in the nuts at work earlier today, then kicked in the nuts by my kids when I got home. And you just kicked me in the nuts again.
Time to start wearing a cup.
Or looking for a new job or family. I'm sure HR and a family lawyer would be interested to hear of your abuse.
Work with Brad Davison?
I thought Draymond was the professional ball kicker?
Where do you work that getting kicked in the nuts is in the realm of possibilities?

It’s truly a daily occurrence
They are in the 200s on Kenpom.
If the game is even remotely close, Howard needs to be fired.
How about playing two consistent games in a row Franz before calling for firings.
Your posting history is awful. I don't know if you're a troll, but you basically just shit on everyone, including Michigan players and coaches.
I bet you're not really Franz Wagner.
No bet.
Well, Oakland is currently 201st in the country and that game was unnecessarily close, so if we had listened to you Michigan would have fired the future conference championship-winning coach.
But hey, I'm sure you've got a point in there.
Don't even ponder this. What good could possibly come from wondering about a cosmic nut punch that is both extremely unlikely and extremely painful?

Ditto.
Basketball is not football.
Current players were in the 2nd - 3rd grade when the football game was played.
But the TV guys need to fill time and will show the blocked field goal. Once before the opening tip and then in the second half
We beat them last year in Juwan's debut as head coach. It's not like they have some sort of magic spell over us.
If it does happen, it'll be annoying to hear people bring up a game that occurred when I was still in grade school, but whatever. Doesn't matter the team that we matchup against, just get the job done and get to the next round.
In fact, our worst football team since 08 (2014) beat App State by a shit ton
There's no curse. It was one game where a good team beat a team who didn't try, end of story. If we match up with App State, we get to play a bad team (relative to the rest of the field) that we've already seen in the last two years. Seems like a good draw to me
2014 would have beaten 2020.
I agree with you, but I don't think anyone (even going back to any previous matchup with them, regardless of sport) is worried that we're cursed or concerned about losing to App. St. The lack of interest in playing them stems from the fact that the simple mention of Michigan and App St brings out MSU/OSU slappies and all other media types to fawn over the football upset 15 years ago.
You could just tell your MSU friend you're visiting Appalachia for a vacation or something and they're gonna bring up the App St. game because that was a highlight of their life. Its just...annoying. We get it, its hilarious. We lost. It wasn't even the biggest point spread upset that season lol
Given how many times Moo U. has lost to CMU -- especially before upsets like that were a thing, they really have nothing to crow about.
I still remember some guy at the YMCA in Ann Arbor a couple of years after that game wearing an App St. shirt to work out in (and he seemed to be an MSU fan/grad given his water bottle choice and general asshole-ness) and me thinking "good lord, it was a one-off game a couple years ago."
"good lord, it was a one-off game a couple years ago."
Don't underestimate how much that fanbase lives for the demise of others (rather than supporting their own damn teams).
I tore my ACL the day before the horror. I would willing to tear my other one to never be reminded of that hot garbage of a game ever again.
Fortunately that game was on BTN in its infancy, when few people had it. Most people were not able to watch that debacle live.
Alas, I am not included in your "most people" comment.
Damn you, DirecTV! Damn you to hell!!!
Between that game and the hideous Oregon game a week later, both of which were burned into my retina live and in person, showed how vulnerable to speed Lloyd's last team was. I believe that that started the gears turning on hiring Rich Rod and, eventually, the many failed attempts to modernize our offense. It is not a memory I would choose to relive.
Unfortunately it was after bww picked up the big ten network. So if you were, say, in Houston you had the privilege of watching the game with a ton of other big ten fans who literally erupted at the end.
Spicy Garlic Wings, tho.
Cheers.
I was at calahari water park ( Ohio) when we lost that game. All decked out my Michigan gear! Fun times!!! Changed as soon as I seen the end result!!!

ESPN & CBS are already drooling at the promo opportunities.
If we never face App State again, in any way, shape, form, sport, debate, chess match........ I'll be happy.
Doesn't matter who we play, I don't see us falling in the first weekend even with how we have played since the Iowa game. In saying that, there are a couple 4/5 seeds I would prefer to not see in the Sweet 16. First and foremost being Oklahoma St.
Cade Cunningham vs Michigan would be a great ratings matchup.
What's life supposed to be but a constant reminder of our failures?
indeed, this OP just bursts forth with 'well good morning sunshine!'
Rough day yesterday and mgowife is moody to boot.
Bummer, sorry to hear that. Do your best to persevere.
To put it in perspective though, another long time friend of mine called me yesterday to tell me that he put his 46-year-old wife in the hospice the day before. He’s also an ex marine, and they have three young children. There will be many trials in life, and some of them very difficult.
For certain, I count my blessings. Just ready for this week to be over already.
tuesday has a hold on you, but keep stretching
I'm going to be honest: the further we get from the App State game the more I'm like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I mean, we have had some fairly painful moments and seasons since then. The further we distance ourselves from that in time (coming up on 15 years!) the more it just dissolves into general pool of disappointment that spans those years. At that point in time for Michigan football fans we had far less to be disappointed about; that is not so much the case anymore.
The Oregon loss always pained me more anyways, since I actually watched that live.
Agree with this wholeheartedly--a true beatdown. Belotti called off the dogs in the 2nd half, too.
funny, i have a vivid memory of that oregon game precisely because i/we didn't watch it live. i was out on the boat with the kids and turned on the radio to catch the score - and turned it off very quickly. resumed swimming and boating, a much better use of that time.
Yes, the App State upset was bad, but it was written off as "hey, we just were not prepared for a very good team"
The Oregon game showed that we were simply overmatched.... That is what was so disappointing....
I went to Appalachian State game - the blocked field goal happened right in front of me. But I got over it a long time ago.
Am I supposed to hate a little school from North Carolina forever over this? They got their moment in the sun and . . . whatever. Good for them.
The game that sticks in my craw is 2016 OSU.
We had no answers for Dennis Dixon or Jonathan Stewart. If Dixon hadn't blown out his ACL, he probably would have won the Heisman that year, and with him healthy Oregon had a decent chance to end up in the BCS championship game.
That App State football team in 2007 had just won 2 of the last 3 I-AA/FCS National Championships--they were really good, and U-M didn't come to play (not to mention Lloyd's teams always struggled defending the spread/mobile QB's, and this was a great one).
This App State basketball team will be, uh, not that.
Both that loss and the following weekend Oregon loss showed how slow UM team speed was.
There are plenty of D-1A teams that App St would have beaten that season. Armanti Edwards was dynamic as hell.
