OTish: MSU TE Maliq Carr in transfer portal
December 9th, 2023 at 7:03 PM ^
Definite take. For what it's worth, one of State's best players.
December 9th, 2023 at 7:32 PM ^
‘One of state’s best players’ isn’t saying much. Hard pass
December 10th, 2023 at 12:53 AM ^
Jeebus.
This is a bad take.
December 10th, 2023 at 11:20 AM ^
I don’t get it. He’s an overweight, slow TE who doesnt block but hey, he’s one of staee’s best players so we better jump on it.
December 10th, 2023 at 12:28 PM ^
Writing to second the statement that he looks to be out of shape for a TE. But yeah, if you could get him in shape, then we might be talking about there being a player in there.
December 10th, 2023 at 11:28 AM ^
HAWT TAKE ALERT!!!!
December 9th, 2023 at 7:43 PM ^
MSU fan here. He has immense talent, a big body, he makes some great plays. He also disappears for long stretches and drops a lot of balls. Blame it on coaching, blame it on QB, blame it on whatever, but I was never impressed with him. Wish him all the best wherever he ends up, too bad it wasn't better in EL.
December 9th, 2023 at 8:52 PM ^
In fairness to him MSU has been one of the worst teams in the B1G, changing QBs weekly, coaches fired, players leaving....I mean with all that going on I'm not sure how you can expect someone to play to their potential but clearly you did.
December 9th, 2023 at 8:57 PM ^
In all fairness, the same things were said about him when Thorne was there as well.
December 10th, 2023 at 6:23 PM ^
I watched him play for three years. If you think he's better, by all means, go grab him.
December 9th, 2023 at 9:47 PM ^
He single handidly won you the Indiana game. Physical Freak who needs real coaching not Tugging.
December 10th, 2023 at 11:03 PM ^
Totally agree, that TD catch he made with a guy just kinda *bouncing* off him was a perfect example of what I mean with my frustrations.
December 9th, 2023 at 11:25 PM ^
I’m not an MSU fan but your take seems consistent with what I’ve seen too. AJ Barner was an exciting get to me. Carr doesn’t seem quite in that mold.
December 9th, 2023 at 8:22 PM ^
OMG!!!
Michigan has 11 TE's on the current roster.
3 seniors, will be leaving, 2 are coming in this year, so yeah, get him.
Many of these guys are big enough to play OT, OG, C anyway.
You never know when you will be asked to change positions.
December 9th, 2023 at 9:51 PM ^
I went to DCDS with his mom, who was a national-level track star. Great family. One of their other kids, Jeremiah Beasley, is a Michigan commit. Maliq Carr, FWIW, originally chose Purdue over Georgia, and had offers from M, ND, OSU, and PSU.
December 9th, 2023 at 11:43 PM ^
Your comment led me to google--his mom was Peggy Evans (before name change to Carr) at DCDS. A big basketball star too (Michigan's Miss Basketball). I was still in junior high but 30 years later I distinctly remember seeing her practicing the 200M one day b/c she was so clearly on a different level.
December 10th, 2023 at 6:50 AM ^
You’re right, I had forgotten about that. She won a national championship as a basketball player at Tennessee.
December 9th, 2023 at 7:03 PM ^
Wouldn't he have to sit out a year since this is his second transfer?
December 9th, 2023 at 7:18 PM ^
December 9th, 2023 at 7:37 PM ^
You can transfer as many times as you want, but you can only do so once as an undergrad and be immediately eligible. If you're a grad transfer then you're also immediately eligible.
December 9th, 2023 at 8:37 PM ^
Every player transferring from MSU this year should get a NCAA sanctioned Tucker year…
December 9th, 2023 at 8:46 PM ^
....and what about when your coach comes???
/I'll see myself out now.
December 9th, 2023 at 9:03 PM ^
Underrated query. Signed in to upvote.
December 9th, 2023 at 7:19 PM ^
I don’t think that applies to grad transfers
December 9th, 2023 at 7:20 PM ^
Looks like he redshirted at Purdue in 2020, then played 3 seasons at State. This should be a grad transfer with 2 years of eligibility left. So, no, he shouldn't have to sit a year.
December 9th, 2023 at 9:33 PM ^
If he redshirted at Purdue and then played three at State, wouldn’t he only have 1 year left?
December 9th, 2023 at 10:24 PM ^
Has an extra year due to his Covid-shirt
December 9th, 2023 at 10:50 PM ^
2020 doesn’t count, but it doesn’t already because he redshirted. It doesn’t not count twice, in other words. Unless he also redshirted while at MSU, he should have only one year left.
December 9th, 2023 at 11:27 PM ^
Pretty sure that isn't how it works everyone gets a free 2020 no matter if they played or not. As that would t be fair to those who redshirted that year. Not saying the NCAA is fair but everyone who was on a roster during the 2020 season gets a free year
December 10th, 2023 at 1:13 AM ^
You’re not looking at it the right way. You get up to four years of playing more than four games, but 2020 doesn’t count against those four years. So if he played more than four games in each of ‘21, ‘22, and ‘23, then he has one more year left. He could redshirt in 2024 because of 2020, and then play in 2025, but if he plays enough next year that’s it on his eligibility.
December 10th, 2023 at 10:08 AM ^
Yeah you are right, the Covid year is waived as far as counting as a season of competition but he still only gets 4 seasons of competition total (within 6 rather than the usual 5 year span)
December 10th, 2023 at 11:11 AM ^
Right, he gets a free 2020. Doesn’t count.
2021 was freshman eligibility
2022 was sophomore eligibility
2023 was junior eligibility.
Next season will be Senior eligibility, his last year.
His only possibility of playing in 2025 would be theoretically redshirting in 2024, but theoretically not playing next season doesn’t count as an extra year of eligibility in this scenario.
December 10th, 2023 at 11:09 AM ^
But you don’t get two years for Covid and redshirting the same year. If he redshirted in 2020, it’s still one year. Freshman eligibility in 2021, sophomore in 2022, junior this year. Next year he would have senior eligibility.
Using 2020 as a Covid year is fine, it gives him the ability to redshirt. But he doesn’t have two years of eligibility. He only has one year left where he can actually play more than 4 games.
December 9th, 2023 at 7:04 PM ^
Based on what little I remember of his play this year, he seemed more catchy than blocky. Dunno if that's something that would interest the staff or not.
December 9th, 2023 at 7:05 PM ^
Last sparty to leave, turn off the lights/ extinguish the couch fire 😭
December 9th, 2023 at 7:18 PM ^
A departure from Staee is not OT
December 9th, 2023 at 7:31 PM ^
Don’t think we need an overweight, slow TE who can’t block
December 10th, 2023 at 12:32 PM ^
But people can get back into shape and sometimes that is what makes them excel at a sport.
December 9th, 2023 at 7:32 PM ^
UPDATE - DT D. Palepale has flipped from USC to M per the Twitters. (3 star DT with a 4-star offer sheet - M, PSU, USC among others)
Good luck to Malik but “do not want” for M. He is a poor (or unwilling) blocker despite ideal size. He also was the kid we recruited out of HS as a TE but refused to play anything other than WR - was quickly converted to TE once he got to Purdue despite their promises and later hopped to MSU as a TE because they promised him a shot at playing hoops — also never came to pass.
December 9th, 2023 at 9:17 PM ^
Maybe he wants to go to a program that can help him become a complete TE.
December 10th, 2023 at 11:26 AM ^
In my opinion effort contributes to success in blocking as least as much as technique etc.
Perhaps I was too harsh on the young man but I did not see a lot of effort from Carr in terms of blocking during the little time I spent watching MSU football this year. He has the size to be a beast - heck he is big enough to play the 6th OL in our system while actually requiring coverage in case he goes out on a route.
December 9th, 2023 at 7:33 PM ^
Since his brother is in Michigan’s 2024 recruiting class, I could see this happening.
December 9th, 2023 at 7:42 PM ^
This is 90% Michigan and 10% someone else. For those saying you don’t want him, you’ll most likely be disappointed. He’ll likely be a Wolverine soon. He wants to play with his brother and Michigan sees him as a take. Also helps with Underwood recruitment.
December 9th, 2023 at 8:07 PM ^
Helps with Underwood? Solidify us as the runner up?
He ain't coming here. He's in bed with the purple face.
December 9th, 2023 at 8:27 PM ^
I actually think this will happen. I believe he does go to LSU first. I’m less convinced he’ll be there after a year.
December 9th, 2023 at 8:09 PM ^
Who is his brother ?
