OTish: MSU TE Maliq Carr in transfer portal

Not sure if Michigan is interested or not, but he's a local kid with at one time mutual interest and an offer.

You’re not looking at it the right way.  You get up to four years of playing more than four games, but 2020 doesn’t count against those four years.  So if he played more than four games in each of ‘21, ‘22, and ‘23, then he has one more year left.  He could redshirt in 2024 because of 2020, and then play in 2025, but if he plays enough next year that’s it on his eligibility.

Right, he gets a free 2020. Doesn’t count.

2021 was freshman eligibility

2022 was sophomore eligibility

2023 was junior eligibility.

Next season will be Senior eligibility, his last year.

His only possibility of playing in 2025 would be theoretically redshirting in 2024, but theoretically not playing next season doesn’t count as an extra year of eligibility in this scenario.

But you don’t get two years for Covid and redshirting the same year. If he redshirted in 2020, it’s still one year. Freshman eligibility in 2021, sophomore in 2022, junior this year. Next year he would have senior eligibility.

Using 2020 as a Covid year is fine, it gives him the ability to redshirt. But he doesn’t have two years of eligibility. He only has one year left where he can actually play more than 4 games.

Based on what little I remember of his play this year, he seemed more catchy than blocky.  Dunno if that's something that would interest the staff or not.

UPDATE - DT D. Palepale has flipped from USC to M per the Twitters. (3 star DT with a 4-star offer sheet - M, PSU, USC among others)

Good luck to Malik but “do not want” for M.  He is a poor (or unwilling) blocker despite ideal size.  He also was the kid we recruited out of HS as a TE but refused to play anything other than WR - was quickly converted to TE once he got to Purdue despite their promises and later hopped to MSU as a TE because they promised him a shot at playing hoops — also never came to pass.

In my opinion effort contributes to success in blocking as least as much as technique etc.

Perhaps I was too harsh on the young man but I did not see a lot of effort from Carr in terms of blocking during the little time I spent watching MSU football this year.  He has the size to be a beast - heck he is big enough to play the 6th OL in our system while actually requiring coverage in case he goes out on a route.

This is 90% Michigan and 10% someone else. For those saying you don’t want him, you’ll most likely be disappointed. He’ll likely be a Wolverine soon. He wants to play with his brother and Michigan sees him as a take. Also helps with Underwood recruitment.
