OT: Vasectomy advice

Submitted by Bo Schemheckler on August 1st, 2019 at 9:48 PM

Tomorrow, after 3 kids, I will be retiring the ol'  huevos. It's been a good run but 3 kids under 4 is enough and it was time for some heavy risk reduction. Who has been snipped and do you have any advice for the next few days that I should know about?

Good luck. I think you are out of your mind. You might want a kid with another woman some day. Never say never. There is a reason men don't go through menopause.

My 3rd daughter is living proof that snips can, indeed, grow back.  Dr. said that chances of growing back tubular scar tissue was about the same as winning the lottery.  That being said, I wouldn't trade my daughter for all the money in the world.  Sometimes things happen for a reason.  She's living proof of that.  I won the lottery in a different way.  Oh - and, yes, I had the procedure done a second time.  It was a non-event.

Do you have kids, Eli? I'm not setting you up. Just genuinely curious.

I do, and I'm definitely done. Nothing to reconsider. Even if I were to miraculously open up to the idea down the road, age alone would prevent me from following through. Absolutely no way I'm resetting that clock and going through all that pregnancy/infancy/toddler crap again in my 40s or beyond. And if Future Me decides that sounds like a good idea, well that idiot has apparently forgotten what a pain in the ass it is to raise a child and I'm comfortable revoking his right to make those decisions.

My urologist was 9 months pregnant, and throughout I could only wonder if she might go into labor while holding a scalpel that close to my sensitive bits. Very nice lady, very good surgeon according to my wife (who is also a surgeon). HOWEVER, the protocol at UM is to not give an antibiotic with the surgery. I ended up with a pretty bad infection that involved a fever that was >101 and a night in which I thought I was going to die. Three weeks of Keflex later, I was more or less back to normal, although I'm still quite tender especially when I mow my lawn on my riding mower (procedure was in April).

Supposedly my case was quite rare. That's what they tell me, anyway.

Now, I do remember the first 48 hours (before the infection set in) I felt virtually no pain. I mean I forgot to take my motrin and Tylenol, it was so mild. It felt like I had a bag of jelly between my legs, but nothing painful. The only pain I felt started after the infection.

No medals given out, although I did get used to having to drop my pants for people throughout the process. I had just gotten over the embarrassment and felt quite comfortable undoing my zipper and belt buckle for anyone with a medical degree by the end of it, although for my last appointment with the HEAD OF UROLOGY at Taubman, I dropped my pants, feeling pretty good that everything was back to normal and his first words were "wow, it's flopping around nicely this time" and I completely lost my confidence once again.

If anything, I gained a healthy respect for women who have to go through that repeatedly during pregnancy.

Mine was done with tiny, sharp scissors. I didn't even get stitches because the opening was so small. I had no problems. Before I left, he said there was no risk of infection because there is so much blood flow to the area.

I just laid in my bed with a bag of frozen peas inside a gallon ziplock bag. When they thawed, I removed the peas from the bag to put back in the freezer. I didn't put a bag that had been directly against my balls, next to food plan to eat.

If you were treated at Taubman, that should have involved a lot of doctors and students.  When I told my PCP at my annual physical that I wanted a vasectomy, he did a quick exam of my vas deferens then turned to the female med student and said now she will do the same exam. Nothing makes your dick turtle like having a female med student who shouldn't even be in the room examine your balls. I guess they have to learn on someone. May as well be me.

When I got the procedure at the other office, the doctor said he usually has a female assistant who just happened to be off that day. I got lucky that day. When you get medical care at U of M, having lots of people involved is just part of the deal.

I've heard stories about women having uterine tumors removed at a teaching hospital. While they are out on the table, they will run an entire class of students through the OR to run their hand inside her to feel the tumor for themselves. They have no idea this ever happened or that this is common practice.

Most people say they would consent if they were asked beforehand. Some states are making this illegal now that people are finding out about it.

This isn't a rumor. This is legit. There was a story on NPR possibly This American Life or Planet Money where they talked to med students about whether or not they thought it was ethical.

I went to a U of M dermatologist. I had to strip completely naked for a female resident. After that, the real doctor showed up with a student and I had to do it again. WTF you couldn't just do all of this at one time?

There is a delicate balance here, but when you go to a teaching hospital, you are signing up for some of this. An "entire class of students" seems unlikely and improbable and not how surgical rotations work at most teaching hospitals. And logistically, where is this "class of students" coming from in the middle of an OR? But if this does happen, it shouldn't.

Usually at a teaching hospital, there is an attending surgeon with a couple residents and a couple medical students at a time in the OR with them, and the proper etiquette is for the rest of the team or "class" to introduce themselves before the case. But most patients have usually met at least the residents because they are the ones handling most of the scutwork before a case. That is one advantage of a teaching hospital as sometimes it is helpful to have residents and students before and after for care.

Idea for the blog. Set up a system where users can buy helmet stickers for users with a high quality post, similar to Reddit medals. Could show how many are earned on the users page. Could cost a dollar or two per. Would make it easier to keep the blog free and maybe allow for expanded content creation.

I'll accept 3% of each sticker sale. Thanks MGoBlog team, I'm happy we are in business together.

You should treat this as permanent.  Don't enter into it lightly.  I'm guessing if you are having the plug pulled tomorrow, you've already been through this.  Don't be a tough guy--take all the meds they give you before and prescribe after.  ICE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!  Don't rush back into ANYTHING.  And, definitely go back to make sure your tadpoles have permanently flat-lined.  I know a couple guys who didn't...and they had a joyful surprise 9 months later.

No regrets here but take it easy.  I went thru it on a Friday and went back on a Monday when I clearly wasn't ready and ended up needing another day or two of rest for the pain to alleviate. Lot of time in front of the tv with an ice pack will do the trick but again...take it easy for about 4 days afterwards.

The procedure wasn’t benign for me. I didn’t have pain, but it was undoubtedly the most uncomfortable experience of my life.  Didn’t take too long, but would have opted for anesthesia if I had the option

3 bags of frozen peas to recycle (ice doesn’t work as well)

Bikini/boxer briefs to support your balls

bedrest for 24 hours

take it relatively easy for at least 2 weeks, I went back to working out a little too soon and it set me back

motrin round the clock for pain

Expect waxing/waning pain for 6-12 weeks after.  I had a dull 2/10 pain come and go for a while. At the 3 month mark, 99.9% of people should be in the clear

Mine was so uncomfortable, too. Even though there was a pain killer, I was gripping the bed the entire time she was doing the procedure. The needle is definitely the worst part, but feeling the pressure almost the entire time sucked. It was like someone was squeezing my balls for 15 minutes. So glad it is done and I am fully healed. I have twin toddlers. The wife and I are done. We made that decision last year. I wanted no kids. Said I would settle for one. Got two anyway. ??‍♂️

I agree.  I did this about 7 months ago and honestly there was more pain the last time I had a cavity filled.  You will need recovery time too.  My wife view this as a gift for her too, so she did not mind giving me the weekend to recover.  I brought my Playstation 4 up to the bedroom to play and watched Netflix for 2 days.  Buy a couple family sized bag of pees or corn to rotate when they loose their cool.  I have heard stories of people cutting the grass two or three days after, but there is no sense in being a hero.  You had a medical procedure performed.  It is a good excuse to take it easy.

Last, and MOST IMPORTANT, there is no immediate effect.  You must read the paperwork the doctors give you.  It takes some time to, I guess you could say, clear the chamber before you do not have to worry about not having kids any more.  I know someone who had it done and did not realize this.  They welcomed their 3rd child 9 months later.  After the time is up you will have to give a sample.  If you get the free and clear, enjoy the extra freedom.

They give you a specimen jar as you leave after your surgery.  They tell you to bring it back after you have met the milestones.  Having said that, when I dropped it off at the doctors, I put the jar back in the bag they gave me and the nurse was happy to leave it in there after placing it on the lab testing tray.  It was less embarrassing than I thought it would be, but it is probably because the people working there had a lot of experience with that kind of thing.

Mine was not bad, a bit of pain and swelling for a few days and just tender I guess I would say. Don't jump back into he saddle too quickly afterwards, i think they said a week you should wait.  I have heard that is not pleasant feeling.

Also make sure you do the follow up tests, only way to confirm it worked and your body didn't go all freak mode and put itself back together.

My nurse (a dude) told me that when he got his, a jock strap helped a ton.  I hadn't worn one since high school, but he was pretty convincing.  He was right.  I tried going without it a few hours and understood quickly what he was talking about.  I was on the golf course under 24 hours after I got mine but wore that jock strap.  It was all good so long as I wore it (do anticipate a smidge of blood if you're squatting over putts all day).

Just remember to put pants on if you're going down to the kitchen.  Otherwise your children will get a sight they'll never unsee ("Hey, fam!  Who wants waffles?").

Definitely bad planning since you're giving up a summer weekend or 2.  Best times to schedule are 1. 1st weekend of March Madness  2. Masters  3. US Open.  4. Wildcard or Divisional weekend of NFL Playoffs.  Built in excuse.

Don't worry when your sack looks like walnuts coming off a tree.  Lots of ice (frozen corn or peas) and a cooler of ice cold beers nearby.  Since it's summer, get some Leinenkugel Summer Shandy's.

Also, most important, get rid of the "excess" left behind.  A friend thought he was OK, then had a little present arrive 9 months after!!!!
