Sparty upset up by the Georgetown Hoyas at Madison Square Garden 64-60. This is coming after a 5 game losing streak for the Hoyas.
alternate headline: man does job
That doesn't make me feel any better in any way... Sure doesn't help Michigan either.
Generally, this helps us. We compete with Staee for recruits, seeding, etc. Whatever small, incremental SOS nick we take for this, it's far outweighed by what's good about it.
I hear you on that (and it's not exactly disappointing to see Sparty lose), but beyond the SOS calculations, I'm a little concerned about how the B1G is going to be perceived from here on out. It's looking less like a murderer's row and more like a big mess of parity/mediocrity.
And it's just as safe to say our seeding won't be based on one Staee loss either.
This doesn't help us, at all
I don't completely buy that. Yes, there's a strength of schedule issue (which will only affect tournament seed), but everything else about this is positive. Remember that we're competing with MSU for tournament seeds, recruits, positive media attention, etc., and that it's fun to see them lose. Plus, if this makes things a little less settled and happy in East Lansing, it could negatively affect their (Big Ten) play this season.
All in all, it's a positive in my opinion.
I can always count on positivity from turd.
That's why I'm here.
This probably hurts Michigan.
It's non-conference play. doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. besides, they are still without Payne and Dawson :-\
You mean we're without Payne and Dawson, right, Spart?
And your problem is what, exactly? Are you mad that I don't give a crap if Sparty loses a meaningless non conference game?
I can't think of many things that could make me less "mad" than seeing through your tedious schtick. Amused with your faux indignant act, maybe.
I guess I don't really care what you since all you seem to do is troll other people all of the time without ever having a single thought or opinion of your own. Go crawl back into your hole and maybe find a hobby.
oh come on, dude
Credibility strike to the Big Ten!
Needed it to be a conference loss for them.
This is a schadenfreude posbang, because it doesn't really help Michigan. Still, though, I'm not sad about seeing Sparty lose. Perhaps this could start a streak?
Yeah...B1G ain't so great it turns out...
Well then I guess the Big 12 isn't that great either.
Kansas 7-0 (losing at Texas 67-53)
Iowa State 4-4
Texas Tech 3-6
Yes, the Big Ten is beating up on each other but the Big 12 is the conference most cited as the second best or maybe first best by the MSM and this looks no better than in conference for the Big Ten. This loss by MSU is not good but it's one game. Out of conference the conference has some impressive victories and we'll get to see how we do in the Tournament but I suspect the Big Ten will do fairly well.
Didn't realize the Big 12 looked like that in conference. But you also can't disregard the MSU loss. At a point in the season when out of conference games are rare, the perceived best team in the B1G losing to a (hopefully) NIT bound team doesn't look good at all.
Just what is real this year in NCAA Division 1 bball. All you hear about right now is how shaky the B1G is looking on one hand and how robust (Section 1, is it OK to use that word?) the Big 12 is, on the other. Similar storylines for both conferences.
This is not correct. Completely misused. I guess you're trying to be funny and rag on Section 1 because he posted how frequently people use the phrase completely incorrectly? By using it wrong? I don't get the joke.
Why Posbang? This isn't good for us.
I wish MSU nothing but fire and brimstone in conference play, but we kinda want them to win out of conference you know.
Exactly. Laying it to Georgetown would have been good. Losing to Iowa would have been good. B1G not looking so great right now.
Aside from this game how is it not looking good? All I have seen is that the conference is very deep and OSU and Wisconsin are not the world beaters people thought they were. Doesn't mean that the conference top to bottom isn't great.
If a scenario occurs where Michigan and MSU lost in the same round of the B1G, this loss will help Michigan to potentially edge them out a seed number or something. Stretch maybe, but still true.
Plus it's State, I never mind seeing them lose a game on national television, B1G or not. The B1G credibility will show itself brightly when we're kicking the ass of teams in the big dance, knock on wood.
I blame it on the bronze uniforms.
Those uniforms looked bad. The players probably looked in a mirror and lost confidence...or maybe it was Izzo screaming at them.
We are competing against MSU for seed placement in the NCAAs. Since the NCAA tries to place teams in their home region now, we have a better chance at getting to the Midwest regional (Indianapolis) if MSU is out of the way. I also think that region should get the weakest #1, with Arizona out west, Syracuse in the east, and Kansas in the south (Memphis is closer to them than Indy. So I'll take the minor embarassment to the B1G for the significant hit to Sparty's resume.
Nothing good comes out of this but nice to see Sparta lose
the conference, the tournament: we should want MSU to win out of conference, beat the right in-conference teams, etc.
I'm trying to reconcile all of that with a wish that MSU would lose every. single. game. that they play.
I finally stumble on a posbang thread before it has fizzled out, only to find it's not really a posbang thread at all.
Agreed, this doesn't help us, but I still have the "go green - go white" chants in my head from after the 2010 FB game in AA, so fuck Sparty anyway.
It's actually GO BRONZE now, dontchya know? They play so well in their Baylor colors.
When Nike told them bronze was their new color. There were 7 teams who got those 'special Nike' uniforms, and I looked at all 7 and the other 6 (Syracuse, OSU, Duke, Neb, et al) all had traditional colors. Only Sparty went with what Nike declared as their new color.
(Potato Growers Association)
I'll never root for the Spartans. Bang away
looked super enticing, as did the moneyline. Live betting this game was ridiculously great. Basically got same odds when MSU went up 3 in the first half.
But yes bad for Michigan overall.
If you also looked at the predictions, the chances of MSU losing this game would have seemed rather remote. Massey Ratings, for example, gave MSU an 88% predicted win probability and a median score of 74-62 or so. TeamRankings and other sites had similar predictions as well and spreads of 4-6 possessions basically. It made intuitive sense too - a limping 19-2 MSU team versus a plodding Georgetown. As we know, of course, basketball is strange sometimes.
Some small consolation that perhaps comes out of it - MSU is the sole remaining obstacle to us being rated at the top of the conference on Massey and other sites. Take care of business tomorrow and the obstacle, by rule of various algorithms, could be removed.
I am not fully understanding your point and i think it was because I didnt provide enough info - I meant 7.5 for Georgetown looked super enticing. I thought the game was prime for an upset based on how they match up on the offensive boards (they are arguably more athletic than MSU), the previous OT game MSU played, the referee conference association. Probably the only thing that made me worry was the 8 or 9 TOs in the first half, which actually did not matter because of the OReb destruction GT placed on the smaller lineup of MSU.
I fully acknowledge that my analytics may be terrible on this whole thing though, and this may be just dumb luck, but dam it still feels good to live bet this game correctly.
Probably not the right place for this, but I don't know how this can be a good thing for Michigan. Yea they are Little Brother and everything, but we look a lot better come tourney time if State, Iowa, Wisconsin and others are looking good. Plus this is a game most Big 10 teams should've won. Plus the more losses Sparty gets, the more important it is for them to win at Crisler.
Crisler gets out of hand in our favor, the importance of it will cause them to further choke.
It might be time for a moratorium on posbangs if the MSU loss constitutes one in some minds...
Sparty are such assholes, they been squeken by teams in the big ten even when they were healthy, and now that the game doesn't matter they loose.
This can't be real, can it?
Yea Hoyas! And they are terrible lol. Who cares about the conference now? We take care of business we shouldn't care if other teams win.
#6 Kansas 69
#25 Texas 81
#7 Michigan State 60
#8 Oklahoma State 70
We're at #10 right now. Not that it matters all that much, but if we beat Indiana tomorrow, we're likely to climb quite a bit in the AP poll.
But yeah, it means next to nothing at this point in the season.
Yes and no. While our ranking doesn't matter, these are the types of teams that we'll be up against for tournament seeds in a few weeks. It's good to see them lose because it makes our resumes stronger than theirs, comparatively (though I guess it's debatable whether we wanted Texas or Kansas to win).
I agree that it relatively helps in that perspective of tourney resumes. But I'd rather the team we play 2-3 times (or maybe beat 2-3 times) have the best record they can.
The more seasons we climb in the top 10 of the rankings, the better it is for Beilein's recruiting.
The conference strength thing seems overstated to me. Kentucky plays in a terrible basketball conference and they don't have any prestige issues. Same with teams like Wichita State. As long as Michigan wins, it will all work out just fine.
This. Is. Genius.
it only really matters for bubble teams and the seeds they end up getting.
Judging by the OP's score so far, well...eh...I guess I'm just here to look around. Carry on.
This. Is bad for us. Coupled with Minnesota's loss to NW and Wisconsin's continued slide, will we still even have a Top 25 win away from home?
At this point, does it matter? The rest of the Big Ten is showing us how easily beatable they are on any given day, even on their home court. I'm now 100% convinced that there's no reason why we shouldn't bulldoze our way through the rest of Big Ten play and then the B1G tourney. Barring an utter collapes, we should have a very nice seed in the NCAA tourney once its all said and done.
Always good to have Staee lose. We dont have to worry about anyone else at this point, just win baby!
Didn't catch any of it. How was Izzo on the injury whining?
Didn't see it but my MSU friends are insufferable with their excuses.
I always like to see MSU bball lose. But of course if they were healthy they would have won by 25.
Probably not. I'm over the excuses for this team. They are what they are. Welcome to a thing called sports. Dawson has had games when he's disappeared and so has Payne. Appling is just straight up average.
2014 does not like Sparty.
Tom Izzo's insolence brought down the wrath of 2014.
Remember, MSU was playing with Keith Appling's one functioning index finger on his left hand, Gary Harris's desicated remains due to over exertion, and 12 walk-ons, while Georgetown was rolling witha Space Jam-style lineup Ewing, Mourning, AND Mutombo in the front-court, Iverson and Sleepy Floyd in the backcourt, and Roy Hibbert off the bench.
When Izzo has to play weird guys.
And you shoot like garbage.
i knew they were in trouble when izzo mentioned his pre game porage was too hot...
waaaay too much "this is bad for michigan". a loss for sparty is good for michigan. seeding is a big deal, but last year we were fine as a 4 seed, and we're at least on pace for that. no one knows how it willl shake out, but we do know sparty just lost to a mediocre team.
enjoy it, forgodssake.
Thank god he douched Izzo. He's a beast. Imagine how insufferable they'd be with the best player in the country (arguably)
It bumps MSU behind us in the seeding down to a 3, and it makes me happy when Izzo has a sad.
I don't think this matters that much in the grand scheme of things; the narrative is that MSU is down two major pieces, and it was a close loss. Maybe if they continue to drop games it will matter, but this squad has some nice scalps that aren't going to be diminished as the year progresses, and if anything this may highlight how strong UM's win was given it was on the road.
And our seeding will take care of itself. I expect Sparty to get healthy and tuned up and be a tough team to beat come March. They almost always are. Seems unlikely the b10 has six tourney teams the way things are now, but that could change quickly. I can see us having only 4. Nice to see Sparty spart on the national stage, though!
when we can't posbang a MSU loss. Michigan's destiny is in Michigan's hands, not MSUs.
losing especially when they trot out just gawd awful uniformz thinking they are sweet.
Hallowed be thy name.
Battered MSU team upset by Hoyas! You know... Because Sparty is so beaten up this season. Blah blah blah!
wrong that I am smiling?
Anyone who doesn't relish the pure joy of Sparty losing because they're worried about SOS's and RPI's has really lost a lot of what being a college sports fan is about.
I am so damned sick of the conference kumbaya crap. I will always love Ohio or little bro' losing at anything unless there is some very direct and significant benefit to us in their winning. And even then there will be mixed emotions.
"but what will the computers think?!?!?!?"
might want to consider MSU's unis. The truth is that the simple act of constantly rearranging these things tends to yield more crap than goodness. Many of the same factories pumping the shit out, a lot of the same materials in use, a lot of the same child labor putting the stripes on and the swooshes. Still, if you're absolutely determined to salute one flag instead of the other every time it's run up the pole. . .
