Generally, this helps us. We compete with Staee for recruits, seeding, etc. Whatever small, incremental SOS nick we take for this, it's far outweighed by what's good about it.
February 1st, 2014 at 7:08 PM ^
I hear you on that (and it's not exactly disappointing to see Sparty lose), but beyond the SOS calculations, I'm a little concerned about how the B1G is going to be perceived from here on out. It's looking less like a murderer's row and more like a big mess of parity/mediocrity.
February 2nd, 2014 at 2:51 AM ^
This is crap. It's very safe to say that not one kid will pick Michigan over Michigan State based on what happened in a game vs. Georgetown in Madison Square Garden this year.
February 2nd, 2014 at 8:00 AM ^
And it's just as safe to say our seeding won't be based on one Staee loss either.

I don't completely buy that. Yes, there's a strength of schedule issue (which will only affect tournament seed), but everything else about this is positive. Remember that we're competing with MSU for tournament seeds, recruits, positive media attention, etc., and that it's fun to see them lose. Plus, if this makes things a little less settled and happy in East Lansing, it could negatively affect their (Big Ten) play this season.
All in all, it's a positive in my opinion.

It's non-conference play. doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. besides, they are still without Payne and Dawson :-\

You mean we're without Payne and Dawson, right, Spart?

This is a schadenfreude posbang, because it doesn't really help Michigan. Still, though, I'm not sad about seeing Sparty lose. Perhaps this could start a streak?

Well then I guess the Big 12 isn't that great either.
Kansas 7-0 (losing at Texas 67-53)
Texas 5-2
Oklahoma 6-3
KSU 5-4
WVU 5-4
Iowa State 4-4
OSU 4-4
Texas Tech 3-6
Baylor 2-6
TCU 0-8
Yes, the Big Ten is beating up on each other but the Big 12 is the conference most cited as the second best or maybe first best by the MSM and this looks no better than in conference for the Big Ten. This loss by MSU is not good but it's one game. Out of conference the conference has some impressive victories and we'll get to see how we do in the Tournament but I suspect the Big Ten will do fairly well.

Just what is real this year in NCAA Division 1 bball. All you hear about right now is how shaky the B1G is looking on one hand and how robust (Section 1, is it OK to use that word?) the Big 12 is, on the other. Similar storylines for both conferences.
February 1st, 2014 at 7:27 PM ^
This is not correct. Completely misused. I guess you're trying to be funny and rag on Section 1 because he posted how frequently people use the phrase completely incorrectly? By using it wrong? I don't get the joke.
February 1st, 2014 at 6:00 PM ^
Why Posbang? This isn't good for us.
I wish MSU nothing but fire and brimstone in conference play, but we kinda want them to win out of conference you know.

If a scenario occurs where Michigan and MSU lost in the same round of the B1G, this loss will help Michigan to potentially edge them out a seed number or something. Stretch maybe, but still true.
Plus it's State, I never mind seeing them lose a game on national television, B1G or not. The B1G credibility will show itself brightly when we're kicking the ass of teams in the big dance, knock on wood.

Those uniforms looked bad. The players probably looked in a mirror and lost confidence...or maybe it was Izzo screaming at them.
February 1st, 2014 at 6:03 PM ^
We are competing against MSU for seed placement in the NCAAs. Since the NCAA tries to place teams in their home region now, we have a better chance at getting to the Midwest regional (Indianapolis) if MSU is out of the way. I also think that region should get the weakest #1, with Arizona out west, Syracuse in the east, and Kansas in the south (Memphis is closer to them than Indy. So I'll take the minor embarassment to the B1G for the significant hit to Sparty's resume.
February 1st, 2014 at 6:03 PM ^
Is funny that sparty lost to a team with injuries and suspension. What will be the excuses this time?
February 1st, 2014 at 6:06 PM ^
If we wing the B1G as well as the B1G tournament we will have a 1 seed. Sparty losing this game is fine by me.

I finally stumble on a posbang thread before it has fizzled out, only to find it's not really a posbang thread at all.
Agreed, this doesn't help us, but I still have the "go green - go white" chants in my head from after the 2010 FB game in AA, so fuck Sparty anyway.
February 1st, 2014 at 6:25 PM ^
It's actually GO BRONZE now, dontchya know? They play so well in their Baylor colors.

February 2nd, 2014 at 11:41 AM ^
When Nike told them bronze was their new color. There were 7 teams who got those 'special Nike' uniforms, and I looked at all 7 and the other 6 (Syracuse, OSU, Duke, Neb, et al) all had traditional colors. Only Sparty went with what Nike declared as their new color.

looked super enticing, as did the moneyline. Live betting this game was ridiculously great. Basically got same odds when MSU went up 3 in the first half.
But yes bad for Michigan overall.
February 1st, 2014 at 6:27 PM ^
If you also looked at the predictions, the chances of MSU losing this game would have seemed rather remote. Massey Ratings, for example, gave MSU an 88% predicted win probability and a median score of 74-62 or so. TeamRankings and other sites had similar predictions as well and spreads of 4-6 possessions basically. It made intuitive sense too - a limping 19-2 MSU team versus a plodding Georgetown. As we know, of course, basketball is strange sometimes.
Some small consolation that perhaps comes out of it - MSU is the sole remaining obstacle to us being rated at the top of the conference on Massey and other sites. Take care of business tomorrow and the obstacle, by rule of various algorithms, could be removed.
February 1st, 2014 at 6:57 PM ^
I am not fully understanding your point and i think it was because I didnt provide enough info - I meant 7.5 for Georgetown looked super enticing. I thought the game was prime for an upset based on how they match up on the offensive boards (they are arguably more athletic than MSU), the previous OT game MSU played, the referee conference association. Probably the only thing that made me worry was the 8 or 9 TOs in the first half, which actually did not matter because of the OReb destruction GT placed on the smaller lineup of MSU.
I fully acknowledge that my analytics may be terrible on this whole thing though, and this may be just dumb luck, but dam it still feels good to live bet this game correctly.
February 1st, 2014 at 6:20 PM ^
Probably not the right place for this, but I don't know how this can be a good thing for Michigan. Yea they are Little Brother and everything, but we look a lot better come tourney time if State, Iowa, Wisconsin and others are looking good. Plus this is a game most Big 10 teams should've won. Plus the more losses Sparty gets, the more important it is for them to win at Crisler.
