OT: Russell Wilson proposes NFL overtime games be decided by kicks. How would you do it?

Russell Wilson suggested that tie games be decided by a single field goal attempt from the 35 yard line. You win if you make it. You lose if you don't. I'm not sure if he was referring to games tied at the end of overtime or games tied at the end of regulation.
How do you think overtime should work in the NFL (or any level of football for that matter)?
My suggestion, which has its obvious flaws:
Use college rules (trading possessions indefinitely) with the following changes:
You cannot kick a field goal.
You cannot throw a forward pass.
You have to go for two after any touchdown.
Possessions start at the opposing team's ten yard line.
This would be a brutal, old-fashioned slog, which I like.

Either way, 74.5 teams winning vs 49.5 losing is a very substantial number in a sport where losing 1 or 2 games can basically change your entire fortune.
And even if the odds aren't overwhelming in favor of the coin toss winner, think of it logically and in the spirit of the sport. Could you imagine an NHL shoot out where one team gets to take a shot at goal and the game is over if they score? Or a baseball OT where the top half of the inning team gets a run and that ends the game?

Yup - trying to dig it up too. It's been a while since I 've looked because I did a ton of research a few years back comparing the two. It came out to something along the lines of 59% of college football coin toss winners won OT, and 51% in the NFL. Going second in college is far more valuable than receiving in the NFL rules.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the team to go second in any given college overtime period is significantly more likely to win the game during that overtime period. So I guess I'd expect the same to hold true during the first overtime period and thus the coinflip bias being pronounced. I believe he is wrong, however, with respect to the old NFL overtime rules. I do believe winning the coin flip resulted in a greater chance to win the game.

No. Tie games should never happen. What is the point of playing if no one wins? Ties is one of many reasons why soccer is unwatchable.

How is it unrelated? We're discussing ties and soccer is one of those sports that has ties, which is absurd. I ask again, why bother playing if no one wins?

I do like Playoffs idea #2 in some ways, but there has to be an incentive for the team in possession to try to win in regulation. Perhaps if it goes to overtime and the team in possession scores, the other team is allowed 1 possession to match them,
re: Playoffs idea #3 (Visiting team has to win in regulation). Yes, if the home field advantage was determined by record. To compensate for this disadvantage, no coin flip at the beginning: the Visiting team gets to choose at the beginning of the game to kick, receive, defer, or the end of the field.
If this rule is used in regular season however, it is the Home team that must win in regulation, given home field advantage (and the fact that the schedule is often arbitrarily determined by the league).

Make it similar/same as college football rules and call it a day. The fact that both teams enter on exactly equal footing and one team can lose without getting an opportunity to match is ridiculous.

But I loved sudden death. I do understand, though, that winning the coin flip was a huge advantage. I also don't have a big problem with ties.
Since everyone seems to hate that, though, the college system is the next best option. Just imagine a Saints-Pats shoot out, or Luck Vs. Newton. Would be super entertaining.

Stupid idea. To make the game be decided in a kicking competition begs the question as to why play football in the first place. If games should be decided on a kicking competition, then just eliminate the whole blocking/tackling/running/catching aspect & have every game be decided on kicks.
My overtime idea:
1. Overtime wins count as 1/2 a win in a tiebreaker.
2. Overtime stats do not count toward towards season totals. They would be a separate category.
3. There is no need for a bunch of stupid rules. Just play football. When one team scores the opponent gets one posession to best the score. If you kick a FG, keep them out of the end zone. You put up 7, keep them from scoring & going for 2.
I actually have no problem with ties. That's life. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes there is no winner.

Yes to a kicking competition. But you put the ball at the 2, like for an extra point (college, anyway) and make the biggest guy on each team do the kicking. Best score out of 10 wins.

Put the ball at the 50 and start the entire roster of each team in opposing end zones blindfolded, the first team to get the ball to the other side of the field without passing the ball forward or kicking it wins. No downs. No stoppage of play.
