OT: Oscars

Will Smith gets 5-game suspension. Chris Rock fined $10,000.

On another note, out of genuine curiosity, anyone see and love any of the nominated/ winning films? Busy with work and two kids under 3, I've seen far too few films this past year, but would like to check out a couple. Any favorites/ must sees?

I guess Jada Pinkett Smith has alopecia and and has been public about it for 4 years.  I think Will Smith is great, but what a thin-skinned idiot.  He walks 30 feet and cold cocks a comedian for a joke on live national television?  Talk about lack of executive function.  Not a role model.  Protector?! Whatever.  Curious if he gets charged with anything.

Chris Rock kept his cool.

Will Smith is a jack ass for turning to violence in front of millions and then making excuses for it in his speech.  No apology the next day is acceptable since it will be written by his publicist and no one will see it.

He also has a future staring role in Anger Management 3.

Aren't there clips of Smith chuckling a bit when the joke first lands? Then, 5 seconds later, he's suddenly so offended for his wife that he walks all the way up there to slap Chris Rock? I have no problem if he wants to yell what he yelled, but the slow walk up there and the slap was just ridiculous.

Was this a better or worse joke than the time Seth MacFarlane openly joked about what we'd all later come to find out about Harvey Weinstein? In other words, joking about sexual harassment and in some cases assault? Should Harvey have walked up on stage and punched him? What about all the women he sexually harassed/assaulted?

Yes!  Smith laughed at the GI Jane joke, and then the camera showed Jada not liking it one bit.  That's when Will walked up and sucker punched Rock.  And then his bullshit about having to "protect" people?  Fuck him - I lost a lot of respect for him last night.

Yelling something at Rock to standup for your wife would have been laudable.  Laughing about it, then saying nothing as you walk 30 feet, sucker punching, then walking back like some hero before saying anything was quite the bullshit.

Comedians take too much liberty, and there is the reason great comedy movies don't even exist anymore.  Garbage like this has shamed people into being afraid to be funny

Comedians are supposed to take too much liberty, test boundaries, say things you aren't supposed to say, it's called a joke.

Will Smith looks like a fucking asshole.

I agree.  As someone who as dabbled in the comedic arts, I'm a little biased when addressing this topic, but here it goes.

Comedy is an art, not unlike a painting, or fiction novel, or sculpture etc etc.  Trying to say comedians have too much liberty is a kin to stifling the artistic process of a painter.  And like art, some comedy is funny to some and not to others.  And what makes you offended, may not make me offended.  And while you have every right to be offended at something, you also have every right to NOT be offended at something.  But being offended doesn't give you any special rights or privileges.

Have you watched the Oscars before? Heck, did you see Amy Schumer's opening monologue? She roasted a lot of people. That's what the hosts do. It can be brutal. Who knows if Chris Rock knew about her alopecia. I had no idea. If he did know, then it was just an insensitive joke. He doesn't seem to be that kind of comedian so I suspect he didn't know.

FWIW--I expect every comedian in the country will unleash relentless jokes on Will Smith.  They will defend their profession and their own.  They can't let that stand.  Smith made a very dumb call.  Smith is also in an open marriage where his wife talked in detail about sleeping with other men in front of him.  Dude is going to get ripped apart.

Im of the firm belief that this was a publicity stunt and a very effective one at that

edit: I rewatched it and maybe I've changed my mind. Certainly seems like Will Smith actually lost his cool, but I remain skeptical of an event desperate for people to pay attention to it

Definitely agree. This 100% without a doubt was pre planned.  Sure, we’ve been hearing all week (and before) about how Oscars viewership has fallen off a cliff and they have to revamp the format and engage audiences again.  Then we ‘coincidentally’ get a massively attention grabbing (and pre-planned) movie ‘slap’ for everyone to generate buzz about today.  Well played Chris and Will and Hollywood.  Janet Jackson and Justin timberlake are proud of you

I actually don't think it was. Chris Rock is an awful actor and he seemed truly thrown by the situation. He's never acted that well in any role he has played, lol. If planned it's sincerely his best acting to date as he's very funny but an awful actor.

Also, Will Smith's marriage and personal life has been so fn weird lately. Either it always has been or it turned lately but it's been a weird couple years for him. I mean, the guy laughed and then turned to his not-laughing wife and only then does what he did. If she isn't there be doesn't do that. Why? The crap he's taken lately.

Marriages are often strange but theirs is really weird. They literally did a national TV interview where she sat next to him and talked about banging other men. Specific other men and in pretty decent detail, lol. Will just sat there looking like he wanted to kill himself and she kept going on about it. It's a strange dynamic and there are plenty rumors as to why. In fact, Chris likely almost went there when he said "Ohhh, I could..." afterwards.

Yeah kinda wish Chris would've finished that thought.  I got to think with all the lifestyle stuff around their marriage it could have been the joke heard round the world.

I'm no comedian but something like:  I've slapped your wife harder from behind.

Bitch move by Will Smith!  Bravo to Chris Rock for being the bigger person!

This was not a publicity stunt. This was an entitled Hollywood star throwing a tantrum. I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

Will Smith has a pretty carefully crafted image as the type of actor who all genders, ages and races like. I don’t think looking like a deranged lunatic is the look he wants to go for. I’m sure his career will be fine, but this was not something planned.

Hell I just watched it again...it was a slap not a punch so IDK maybe you are right.

The way he spoke to Rock from the audience afterwards seemed pretty unscripted...as did the way Chris looked to the side right after it happened. Its also an audience of actors and they would know better than anyone if that was just acting or not.

Will be interesting to see if Chris Rock speaks about it any time soon...
