OT: The Official "Tom Izzo's Team Is Garbage" Posbang Thread

Submitted by O.J. The Bouvier on
Almost lost to Boise State and LaLa Lafayette at home; will finally take a well-deserved dive at (YT) Miami. They're so much more terrible than we are. Finally. Bang em if you got em.

I wouldn't say that MSU was mediocre last season.  As you say, they tied for the regular season crown and won the B1G Tournament, beating Wisconsin and OSU en route.  IMO, that says they were a good team (but certainly not a great one).

I will agree with you, though, that they were overseeded as a #1.

Since I have been saying "Tom Izzo is overrated" since John Beilein actually made him start competing for recruits, and "Tom Izzo's team is garbage" since the Wonders Hall Cover-up, I really don't have anything to add.

1) This is exactly how Sparty acts when we lose at football.  Our basketball team is legitimately more talented than theirs for the first time in 15 or so years so I know it's hard to act like we've been there before, but let's try.

2) As much as I hate Sparty when we play them, if there was ever a time to pull for them it was last night.  Their ranking has no effect on us at this point given how high we are, but it does effect the overall perception and ratings of the conference.  I would much rather win the conference championship of by far and away the best conference in college basketball than one that is comparable to another (even if the ACC is a damn good conference).

3) Just like we crack on Sparty for having a successful "little run" at football and now it is time for big brother to restore order, we should probably wait until we have a consistent run in basketball before boasting about our greatness.  Izzo has taken very mediocre teams to the Final Four, we merely have a highly ranked talented team very early in the year.

Coffee is for closers.  Let's get to at least one final four before boasting to Sparty.  Makes us look very little brotherly.

Wow.  Izzo worshiping college basketball sheep prepare to gasp in disbelief, but Belein is head and shoulders above Izzo as a coach.  I'm not sure of the talent, or how it is even quantifiable, on Izzo's team(s) compared to a Belein team before this years loaded team, but I would bet the house on Belein showing he can do a LOT more with a LOT less...  Can't wait for this nauseating izzo fever to finally subside.  I don't know what it will take.

I just can't help myself that it's finally being exposed, so one more thought.  I think a lot of the sheep were won over by the "Magical" run to Detroit and all of the "Maaaagical" things he's "done for our state" but if you look at that team and many of his other deep run/final four teams, even they under-achieved for their talent, and his presumed "dream teams" that have started  preseason top 3 that barely sniffed the tourney would have been Belein masterpieces.  Just watch though, after Belein hangs another banner or has a top 10 year, and Izzo's 7 seed with 2 seed talent sqeaks by Vermont in the first weekend, Belein will be an after thought in yet another corrination of Izzo's "Maaagical" turnaround "Coach of the Year" performance.  About time the best coach in the state get his due...   So glad Martin extended him on his farewell tour...

Before we start "crowning" anyone around here.

We're headed in a great direction. But it doesn't mean the downfall of other good programs just because we're good again.
