OT: News conf. tonight at 7pm-SC saying indication Tressel's job could be in jeopardy.

Submitted by KingsWolverine on

Sportscenter just had a "this just in" clip, saying Gene Smith has called a news conference tonight at 7pm.   They reported that this is an indication that Tressel's job could be in jeopardy because he knew about the NCAA violatons prior to reporting them to the school.  Sounds like they're not too happy about him keeping the info from them.  I'm sure he'll just get slapped on the hand, but I guess we won't know till 7pm tonight.

The last thing I want, besides losing to Ohio State, is losing to Ohio State coached by a former Michigan head coach. That would be awful, especially given that Michigan let him go under the rationale that he was not good enough.

Smith will announce that Tressel will be fired immediately and Urban Meyer will be named the next HC.

We will learn later that Urban Meyer was the unnamed "source"  who ratted out JT.

Haha, you know that even if nothing substantial happens to Tressel, the Urban Meyer rumors have got to be starting already.  I wonder how the fan base would react to playing the style of football they were certain wouldn't work in the B1G...

"Tressel's contract, which pays him an estimated $3.5 million per season, requires that he report any — the word "any" is underlined in the contract — possible rules or legal infractions immediately."

So even if Tressel self-investigated this and thought it was untrue, he could still be fired for not telling OSU compliance about it.

Not that they would fire him. I can't wait to see the OSU AD spin this. Its going to make me sick.

you realists threw cold water on them before I could even get tingly. Still, even seeing that virtuous little boy demeanor sullied for a second may be worth something.

I would love to see the program blow-up, and would love it even more if the suspended players who promised to return to OSU entered the supplemental NFL draft :)

Could this mean that the guy who wrote this article may have been on to something but only had a few pieces of a puzzle that didn't make sense on their own?  He may not have known what he was really looking at at the time...

I'd think it's plausible that what he heard were the beginning rumblings of this but he only had bits and pieces- during that time, there may have been an OSU effort to squash anything that could come out about it and he eventually had to retract his prediction...

It could be that it just took a few months for the info to trickle out to connect all the dots- maybe the guy was right and didn't even know it...

Luke Fickell is a serious candidate, IF, and this is a big IF, Tressel is fired/forced to resign.

Personally, I'll believe it when it happens.   Regardless of what people on here thinks of Tressel's integrity, I think most would admit he isn't stupid enough to try and cover up something like this.  I'd have thought Michigan fans would be more cautious about jumping the gun after their NCAA experiences over the last few years.

Don't begrude us too much.  I think most UM fans here, really, aren't buying into this story too much at this point.  Answers will (hopefully) come in the near future and we can reserve full judgement until then.  But after the shit that UM has been dragged through over the past few years, it's just maybe a little entertaining to see the shoe on the other foot, and watch another high profile program squirm.

It gets even better if you click on Tressel's bio:

"The numbers on Jim Tressel are just as straightforward as the man himself....While fans fantasize that pomp and circumstance surround one of the most accomplished figures in college football, Tressel is much more “what you see is what you get.”"

Or is it....

He is at a god-like status down in C-bus and they will rally around him until the last possible second. My family has several tOSU grads and they are all smart, successful people but they believe everything is a conspiracy against the program because they are too successful. They truly believe that it is all lies.

I sure fucking hope so.  It's been far to long that OSU has gotten away with cheating.  The NCAA always looks past it all and lets it slide.  I'm not the biggest fan of ESPN as a media course, but the more they report it, the more pressure the NCAA will feel to actually doing something about it.

Who am I kidding, the NCAA wont do anything.  Nothing was worse and more publicized than the Cam Newton thing.

He has been withholding this information for 310 DAYS. Maybe he should have a haltime speech at the BTT to get the crowd revved up.

The heat only really got turned up on USC once everyone realized they weren't going to win the PAC-10 and weren't going to a BCS bowl.

Watch: If OSU stumbles out the gate, goes 3-2 while their main guys are suspended, then ends up something like 8-4, 7-5, the NCAA will ratchet things up quickly. Once there isn't a Sugar Bowl TV rating on the line, there will be no more OSU protection.

with NCAA sanctions.  USC isn't reducing its recruiting at all and OSU will not get hit hard.  The NCAA already proved they want OSU at or near the top.   They need that presence until UM gets back to national contention.  Pryor and company sitting out the entire season would be funny though.

that OSU has proposed self-punishment to the NCAA, to wit, Tressel will have to run the stadium steps every other month for one year, dot the "I" in O-H-I-O at the Michigan game while wearing a red diaper with a big Bucknut on his ass, and lick the tattoos off the offending players.  The NCAA is taking this proposal under advisement.

he will be suspended for a year, but he will be able to coach games and practices and such, and recruit. this will set a another good example for the suspended players who get to play in bowl games.

I can see Tressel getting fired for the simple reason that it would fullfill the prophecy of the One who would bring balance to the force (Hoke) in spite of  poor ol' Rich Rod.  Seriously, what else could enrage Rich Rod even more than Hoke rolling over OSU because they have a patchwork team w/o Maize 'n Blue kryptonite wearing a sweater vest and glasses on the sideline?  I can see him getting canned just to spite Rich because everything has pointed to the stars aligning for MAN football. and of course touching kids everyday

It seems weird to me that they're moving so fast.  It's a one-source rumor, right, and barely a day old?

I expected we'd see more "leaks" and speculation and unnamed sources confirming and denying each and every aspect of the story, while OSU bided its time to (a) do some of its own investigation, (2) see if the dust settles and/or (III)  put together a PR gameplan to deal with the fallout, legitimate or otherwise.
