OT: Need help finding a good mattress

Submitted by The Baughz on February 26th, 2021 at 7:45 PM

Well this is my first OT post as I am usually anti OT, but I need some mattress suggestions.

I bought a Purple 3 hybrid a month ago and absolutely hate it. Have slept like shit for a month and wake up sore every morning. I have tried multiple pillows including the one it came with. Nothing has worked.

I was looking at Casper Nova, Helix, Bear hybrid, Layla and some others.

Anyone have experience with those mentioned or have suggestions for different ones? I am 190 lbs and usually am a side/stomach sleeper. Would prefer something a little softer as opposed to super firm.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We just bought a Tuft and Needle mint a week ago. My wife (a side sleeper) loves it, I am 210lbs mostly stomach, sometimes back sleeper, and while it’s not amazing I’m still pretty happy with it. They say it’s “medium-firm” and I’d say that is a fair description. I’d prefer a little softer, but still good over all

Tuft and Needle Mint is what I have and I love it. I sent them a note that their mattress was too firm and instead of returning it they offered to give me the soft topper for free. Absolutely love the mint + topper combo. I also bought their pillows. I’m 195lbs side/stomach sleeper.

I bought a tuft and needle and then added a 3" memory foam topper just before my wedding a couple  years ago (remarrying after losing my wife to cancer in '16).  I don't know if it's the mattress, or the topper (probably both) but we both sleep extremely well.  Their prices are really great, got mine on Amazon (so much fun to watch that sucker expand when you cut away the shrink wrap).

I used to be a stomach sleeper then my chiropractor told me in the late '90s to not do that, it is really bad for your spine.

Sleeing on your sides is best and on back is ok too but try to keep your head straight.

Hey Baughz, have you considered an eggshell mattress top? Just get one online,  my mattress was meh and it helped me a lot.

So, how do you know how you sleep? And how can you possibly predetermine how you are going to sleep?

For the first you are asleep and for the second, it just kind of happens some time during the time you lay down and the repeatable turning process until unconsciousness hits.

Do most people lay down in bed in a specific position and reach back and turn off the power supply or something?

Sometimes I'm not real sure we are all the same species.

"So, how do you know how you sleep? And how can you possibly predetermine how you are going to sleep?"

Not sure if this is for me.

In my case knowing side sleeping is bad I put a golf ball in the pocket of my shorts that prevents me from rolling onto my right side.  Eventually you get trained to not roll that way.

A few weeks ago when I wasn't doing that I slept on my right side.  My shoulder flared up to the point I couldn't lift my arm high enough to touch my head.  Ice, painkillers, and the golfball trick have me back to 80% and getting better.

Man I had a TnN a few years ago before they got bought out and loved it. Best mattress I've ever had. Unfortunately it had some mold grow on it due to being on the floor in a 1st story apartment where moisture came up from the floor and I had to get rid of it. I bought a new one after moving and it just wasn't near as good. This was after Serta had bought them and their product went down hill; other reviews noted it but I was hoping they were wrong, sad to find out they were not.

I've tried Casper and Indigo since, both were decent (currently using Casper), but neither were as good as that original Tuft and Needle. Le sigh.

I don’t understand what people like about memory foam mattresses. I’ve tried all kinds of mattresses and the memory foam ones are just too dense and stiff.  I like different positions, and there’s nothing better than a good spring mattress with some bounce.   Extra firm too for that quick recoil.  And their are other considerations like the hight off the floor needs to be perfect. For my partner, a nice top pad is important for comfort, whether on her back or prone.  Having read these reviews, we plan to test out the Saatva for 90 days.

I bought an adjustable air mattress several years ago. I have a memory foam pad on top of that. It’s so comfortable every night. I can adjust it to a more firm setting when I want that or less if I want to sink in a little. It’s a king size and both sides are separate. I can’t recommend the setup enough.

We go with luxury firm (the middle firmness of their offerings).

I bought one, and liked it enough to buy, after about a year, 3 more for all the other beds (guest room and kids).

Saatva has 3 levels of firmness:  plush soft, luxury firm, and firm.  Also, they have 2 thicknesses or "heights":  14.5" and 11.5".  Those heights do not differ in padding or softness -- one is just to make the sleeping surface higher than the other.  We generally went for 11.5" given the height of our foundations.

They have 180-day money-back guarantee.  If you don't like it, you can have them pick it up and refund.

The wife and I got a Saatva Zenhaven latex mattress about 6 months ago and we're sleeping so much better on it compared to an old memory foam one. It's cooler, more supportive, and I'm not waking up with migraines or sinus issues like I was before. We have the luxury plush side up right now which is a tad bit soft I think since I'm a side and stomach sleeper, so we may flip it soon to try the other side, but have no complaints with how it's set up now.

Sleep is so much more restful now. If I had one complaint compared to the old memory foam is that the latex is "springy" so you can feel movement across the bed, so if you're disturbed by that, you shouldn't consider 100% latex.

I’d recommend the Casper, not because it’s any good (I have no idea) but because my firm has been an investor in the company since their seed round and they could really use your business.  :)

No first hand experience, but bought a Puffy Lux for my son about a year ago and he loves it.  He's a 100% side sleeper (6'2" 190).   It's supposed to be good for side sleepers and made in USA.

We bought the natural hybrid latex mattress from Nest. The bottom is coils and the top is a layer of latex. You can either get medium or firm for the latex. We got the medium. It is the best bed I have ever slept in. I used to have achy hips in the morning, but no more. The latex is pretty bouncy. It gives a lot of support but it's soft, too. I just can't endorse it enough. The website is Nestbedding.com. If you can find a showroom, go do a test drive.  It's nothing like memory foam; you don't sink in and feel trapped. It has a bounce that's incomparable. Also, made in the USA.

Go to Art Van's and lay on their, oh wait. Go to a reputable bedding store and lay on some name brand mattresses, like Serta, etc. We have a firm plush top. Like a pillow top but not as soft/cushy.  Test drive different ones. Good luck ?

We have the purple hybrid 2(?) (whatever the second from the most expensive is). We’ve had it for 2-3 years and love it. I’ve recommended it to multiple people who have told me they love it. My son asked for the same mattress for his birthday and he loves it.

I clicked on the link to recommend a Purple and then read the OP. I’d suggest giving it a try - they have a pretty decent return policy if you don’t like it. Also, we bought their base. I like the way it’s designed and it’s proven to be sturdy.

Cant recommend the Saatva luxury firm enough.  Got it to replace a Stearns & Foster we left at the old place when we moved, and the Saatva is much better for less $$.

As a side/stomach sleeper, you need a true innerspring.  That narrows it down to the mattress store or Saatva.
