OT Mariners break up Verlander perfect game with bunt single

Submitted by Rodriguesqe on

Just the 6th but Verlander would be justified to go head hunting for the rest of his outing. Also, I was just following along via gamecast so if anyone is watching and has more details correct me.

not a ridiculous proposition? being able to get on base a lot is the main reason the batter has a major league roster spot, for which he is paid hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars a year. not only is bunting not a ridiculous proposition, it's one of only a few reasonable things he can do while standing in the batter's box. especially if he's fast.

a team acquiesing to a perfect game in process by the opposing pitcher, now THAT is a ridiculous proposition.

It was Max Scherzer who lost the perfect game on a bush league move by Jose Tabata to drop his (heavily padded) elbow into an inside pitch.  The link below does a nice side-by-side still of Tabata leaning away from an inside pitch earlier in the AB and then the fateful one where he intentionally leaned in.  Max took the high road but it was total bullshit.  Tabata is currently toiling in the minors cause he sucks at baseball.

A few thoughts :

Did it bother anyone else that Mario kept referring to it as a no-hitter getting broken up ? Yeah it was that also, but call it a perfect game.

On the bunt, if Verlander would've gotten that ball on the initial reach, I don't think he would've gotten the runner anyway like some say .

If anyone has been watching the Tigers at all this year (or sadly one could argue the last decade for the most part) , a 4 run lead in the 6th inning means the opposing team can much too easily get back and win the game still .

That's pretty cool for Verlander, but holy cow dude you're calling for intentionally throwing a baseball at someone's head. That's...not ok

Everyone knows the unwritten rule of baseball: you bunt to break up a perfect game, you're liable to have a dead horse's head thrown at you next at-bat. Or something like that, I'm not really a baseball expert

Does watching a sport that takes a break so two dudes can punch each other on ice skates seem normal?

Also, MMA is cockfighting between human beings.

And don't get me started on grown men chasing a little ball around a field.

A person not interested in sports can find something idiotic about every sport.

Need I remind you guys that the world is full of cunts? Yeah, males with no honor or sportsmanship being allowed to participate at the highest levels. That's the world we live in now days. The sad thing is, no one says anything and calls the candy asses out. Ohhh, it's not politically correct to do so. That's why the only sports I watch are Michigan football and basketball.

Just do a search for "bunt during no-hitter" and you'll get lots of results.  JV is just echoing the same complaint other pitchers have made.

He's just pissed off because he let it take him off his game.  Same thing happened back against the Angels a few years ago.  That was in the 8th inning, so you know he was more pissed back then.

Pathetic the GM could not trade or sign a good FA to help. This has been going on for the last 3 years. Looks like my prediction of a sub .500 season will happen.

In 2-3 years the two worst teams in the AL could very well be the Angels and the Tigers. The Angels have nothing in the pipelines (and haven't for a couple years). The Tigers have a lot of money tied up in veterans that at going to age quickly. That's going to take a couple years to pare down, and there's not much behind those vets that can immediately step in.

I was just watching a sports report where the announcer said he didn't think that was the best way to play the game.

So maybe this is bush league. But the comments about throwing at someone because of this were out of line.

In the sixth inning? WTF. Thats not a bid for a perfect game. And then the Mariners score three in theinning and Verlander is pulled? Worthless to post this.

rule, 7th inning or later for hunting to break up a no no? Baseball and it's stupid unwritten rules. I still love the sport, Tigers, no so much.

"Unwritten rule"? Fuck that. The goal is to get on base and score however possible. If it hasn't been working for you swinging, bunt and get SOMEONE on base. Screw baseball and their unwritten rules. I wanna see bat flips on homers if the hitter so desires. If the pitcher doesn't like it, too bad. Don't throw up an easy one next time. If you purposely throw at him the next time, expect to get your ass beat, and I hope the batter brings the bat. If the pitcher can use his weapon, so can the batter. It's shit like this that makes baseball almost completely unwatchable.

And I would say that this adds to it. I agree with the length issue. There should definitely be a pitch clock. From the point it hits the catchers mit you have 20 seconds to release the next pitch. If there's a hit/walk, you have 20 seconds from the point the next batter enters the batters box. 25 seconds of a runner is on base. (Not sure how you regulate pick off throws clearly designed to stall, but that's a discussion worth having) You get one 30-sec timeout per inning which can be used to talk to catcher or pitching coach/manager. Any pitching change not due to injury, new pitcher gets 5 pitches max once reaching mound (he's already thrown 30-40 in bullpen..he's ready). Things like that would help baseball move along I'd bet you can get a game done in just over two hours that way, maybe 2.5 max.

I love baseball and the pace of the game annoys me as well.  A game where a picther works quickly is an amazing revelation. If you ever get the chance watch a game in which Chris Sale pitches.  Dude just gets the rock and chucks it. So much better.

As others noted, it was just the 6th inning.  Bunting there makes total sense.  Had Dyson done it in the first inning and then Verlander was perfect until the 6th, nobody would have freaked out.  Had it been the 9th inning and the Mariners were down, I don't know, 8 runs, sure.  It's a dick move.  But the Tigers couldn't even win this game, and that was well within the course of the game.

Going head hunting after a bunt to break up a no hitter or perfect game isn't an unwritten rule in your context. It more or less comes into play say in the 8th or 9th. Also, it's Dyson, one of the fastest players in the game who is always a threat to bunt. They should and were playing him to bunt, he jist beat them.

1. No one knows how game plays out if bunt doesnt happen . Verlander is prone to quick meltdowns obviously. 2. Mariners are 12 back, tigers are 6 games under and its dead of aummer. I bet in 10 of the peolple posting here knew V had a perfect game going till after the fact because these games mean almost nothing. 3. No bunt is a thing, check espn.com if you really are that new to baseball. 4. Sorry to the peole who got triggered by the headhunting comment, back to the safezone!

A fast dude laid down a bunt in the 6th inning of a close game that his team went on to win.  That is not breaking a rule, it is just baseball.

If he broke up a perfect game with a bunt in the 8th or 9th inning of a 8-0 game, then you have a point. But you actually seem to be implying that somehow the Mariners did something wrong here by coming back in a game starting with a bunt in the 6th.  That is not a thing.

Sometimes it just better to admit you jumped the gun a bit, lick your wounds and live to fight on another thread.

1) Is that Seattle's fault?  If JV is prone to meltdowns as you say, seems like you want to do whatever you can to get in his head if you're the opposition.

2) So because the Mariners are 12 games back in their division they shouldn't even bother trying to win games?  Gotcha.

3) Seems like you might be the one new to baseball.  Jarrod Dyson is as slap-hitty and bunty as they come.  If you're not on your toes as a pitcher or infielder when he comes to the plate, that's on you.

4) So is " LOL sorry I made y'all triggered LMAO!!" the go-to now for people when they say something dumb and everyone calls them out on it?

Bunting in the 6th doesn't warrant chin music, especially for a guy like Dyson who bunts regularly,  but it also shouldn't offend people to suggest that it might.  If it's in the 8th or 9th and it's not a close game, it's an unwritten rule (in other words - expected) that sometime within the series that guy who bunted will get brushed back.  Like it or don't, that's baseball. With how soft our society is getting it makes me wonder how boxing, MMA, or hell even football, still exist.

While baseball certainly has some cultural "quirks" and I'll never understand how juicing was largely just ignored for a few decades, comments like this below say more about poster than about the "core audience" of, ya know, America's Pastime.  Get over yourself.

"There might not be a more culturally idiotic sport than baseball. It's the same one that's in denial about years of "juicing." Look at its core audience and everything starts to make sense."
