OT: At least we didn't lose to Richmond, c'mon Iowa

Submitted by iawolve on March 17th, 2022 at 5:45 PM

Yes, today was pretty bleak at times. However, many people predicted Iowa to have a run due to the way they have been playing and they literally tripped over their junk today against a 12 seed so I will take a win at this point. Tennessee might be a wood chipper, but problem for another day.

The Purdue tourney history is fine and when you guys make it seem like they're bounced in the first round every year, I just don't get it.

Regarding Iowa: is Iowa a perennial 1 or 2 seed who choke? No...so in what manner do they choke more than anyone else?

That's great.  I don't know what that has to do with anything other than we were blessed as all hell to have John Beilein come turn this program around.  It has no bearing on this argument with Purdue.  Purdue is not some annual 1 seed and bowing out earlier than expectations.  Have they lost in the first round? Yes.  They were also. 10 seed and a what, 5 seed? They're never favored to be some National Champion.  They've also done well and gotten multiple Sweet 16s over the last 15 years and truly that's all a team can hope for.  Not making the Final 4 as a 4 seed or even a 2 seed does not make for a "choked away" tournament appearance.  Not for me, anyway.

What does choke mean?

This is weird. If Michigan goes on a downturn for 40 years and is good but never great and goes in on average a 4, 5, 6 seed...but never making a Final Four, tis not choking.  Disappointment is one thing.  Choking is another.

The argument is Purdue chokes..I think, I half forget.  Purdue has had few 1 or 2 seeds where Final 4/Championships games are expected.  Some of you decided to use some historical overall records to pretend like that really matters in these day's NCAA Tournaments.

Come on, I get you're being purposely obtuse and arguing semantics here but you're just wrong.

Purdue's tourney resume comes up desperately wanting when compared to their Big Ten accomplishments and has for the entire history of their program. The Boilermaker's 24 Big Ten titles leads the conference and they have not a single title banner to show for it; heck even their two final fours came in 1969 and 1980.

For a program that routinely competes for Big Ten Titles they have come up woefully short in March time and time again. Also they've had more 1 seeds than Michigan has: '88, '94, and '96 vs '85 and '98 for the Maize and Blue...

I have a soft spot for Purdue and their NCAA record.  They got screwed so many times 20-40 years ago.  They continually had to travel for their high seeds and once they had to play a lower seeded LSU at the Superdome.  Lately, to me, they have collapsed for unknown reasons, but it seems that they have had a run of bad luck more than having a systemic problem.

I admit I did two brackets and had Iowa losing to Richmond. In the other I listened to to many media people and had them in the Sweet 16.  I should have went with my gut Iowa sucks in the Big Dance.   I watched Richmond a couple times this year and  in the Ship game for their conference and was impressed. Their pg is awesome and is the type I thin Juwan would like our short pgs to turn into.   JG is a good player who is quick and gets steals.  Richmond plays in a good league and could win the next game also.

Indeed.  I get the literal sense of literally, but I literally don't understand the informal version... literally.  But then, I also only pronounce it lidərəlē.

lit·er·al·ly  /ˈlidərəlē,ˈlitrəlē/

adverb

  1. in a literal manner or sense; exactly.

    • INFORMAL

used for emphasis or to express strong feeling while not being literally true.

"I was literally blown away by the response I got"  Who said this is OK???  They should be fired, literally.  I want the old literally back.

Not only did we not lose to Iowa, we came from down 15 to beat a 6 seed by 12 without our starting point guard.

let’s not undersell our outstanding win while we also laugh at Iowa!

Michigan, an 11 seed playing without its starting point guard, just knocked off the 6 seed after coming back from 15 down . . . and this thread is like, "Yeah, but even worse things happened today."

What am I missing?

I thought Purdue and Illinois were the only legit Final 4 contenders from the B1G, but I never would have thought Iowa would flame out. If Richmond did this to Iowa, what does Davidson have in store for Sparty?

Oof.

An acquaintance of mine is a big Iowa fan and RTd some Iowa social media account bashing Michigan's tournament berth over TAMU during the first half. I offered a legit mild response after the game, to which both accounts responded graciously, and then I tried to continue the friendly rapprochement by saying that I thought Iowa had a good chance to make it to the FF, which I genuinely believed. I've been happy for them winning like this.

Whoops. Fran strikes again. I guess I could have had more fun if I had waited, but I'm generally not inclined to get into social media taunt wars, either.

Ah well. What a rough loss.

I picked them to cut down the banners in 2005-06 when they were really freaking good- had upperclassmen all over the lineup. Greg Brunner, Adam Haluska- they were legit.

And of course, lost at the buzzer to 14-seed NW State.

I don't know what it is about Iowa and Purdue. They just fold in the tourney. I do think Purdue has some potential staying power- I never bought into Iowa, they felt like a paper tiger.

I ran into 2 guys from my customer at a show last week.  One was a Purdue grad and the other Iowa.  Both guys were saying that they have zero expectations for the tourney due to the years of bowing out early.  Glad I don't know that total lack of confidence for my team.

On Sunday I commented that I thought Iowa got jobbed by the committee as their metrics suggested a 4 or even 3 seed.   Others pointed out that they would be paired with the weakest 4 seed (Providence) in the second round, which was a fair enough point.  But they had to get to the second round first.  I watched Richmond last weekend - they are no joke.
