OT: Kalon Gervin tops JKP for most offers in-state
The D Zone tweeted out that Detroit (MI) Cass Tech cornerback Kalon Gervin passed up Jaylen Kelly-Powell for the most offers all-time in the state of Michigan. Of course, nobody was keeping track of this back in the 1970s, but with the frequency of offers these days, I don't really doubt that it's true. I just find it interesting that Michigan isn't really going after the guy who has the most ever offers in the State of Michigan.

By the way, this comes on the heels of an offer from Alabama.
There's really no way for us to know.
Magnus, how's it looking for the good guys?
Oops.
So you're saying there's a chance?
Actually, since we're not pursuing him, it's going perfectly! For example:
"We don't want you to play here."
"Oh, OK, thanks, I'll look elsewhere."
Perfect.
Maybe DPJ didn't even bother reporting MAC offers when it was probably apparent since he was a freshman that he'd be getting the chance to play high level power 5 football. Any team from the Power 5 all the way down to NAIA would love to have DPJ if they thought they had a chance with him but since Wyoming (for example) has a 0% chance of signing him, do they even bother offerring?
I think the biggest reason is that Michigan is targeting bigger cornerbacks. I think they would bend a little bit if he were a truly dynamic guy, but I don't really see that from him. They did offer him, but they're not pushing for him.
Are you saying that he is no Ambry Thomas?
Could be, but it's not the size of the cornerback that matters. It's how well he moves his hips while engaged...
Wow, that sounds erotic...
tell me more ......
'cept size DOES matter when you are going up against large wide receivers.
Jourdan Lewis is an exception. Not the rule.
Maybe he's not as versatile as those two. Harbaugh loves him some versatility in his players. Regardless, if Harbaugh and Brown don't want him, that's good enough for me.
Hill was listed at 5'10" - he was in Harbaugh's first full class
Thomas was listed at 5'11.5" - he was in Harbaugh's 2nd full class
only K Hudson is under 6'0 (at 5'11") out of all safety and cornerback recruits out of the 2015 and 16 class
now that we have full classes, Jim is being more selective and getting guys that fit his system more perfectly
Gervin is listed at 5'11" - only beats out L Hill for height (assuming the 5'11" is correct)
every DB in the 2018 group is 6'2" or taller
it is quite possible if Lavert Hill was a 2018 year recruit he might not be pushed for
hard to believe he would have beat out DPJ in terms of offers though...a little surprise JKP also had more offers than DPJ
I think some schools didn't bother with offering DPJ because they didn't think they would have a chance.
I don't see how every major CFB wouldn't take DJP if he wanted to play for them.
there wasn't much interest in DJP.

I figure Harbaugh has his reasons for not going full-court press on him. I won't dare to presume off-field issues because I really have no idea. For all I know this kid is a model citizen. He's 5'11'' so I wouldn't think its because he's too short, even though Harbaugh is going after taller guys. Lewis wasn't any taller than that, and he more than proved his worth.
At the end of the day, it could be because Harbaugh has found other guys who's game he just genuinely likes more.
Or it could be that we picked up 4 DBs in the last class and currently have 3 in this one. Harbaugh might just be sitting there and saying barring a de-commit, there's no more room at the inn.
Michigan is still going after corners, so obviously something else is at play.
If Gervin were 6'2", they would probably be pursuing him. But at a listed 5'11" (so he's probably 5'10" or 5'9"), he's not of ideal size, and he's not a dynamic player on the field.
MSU isn't recruiting this kid hard either and we all know they can use talent at corner... or pretty much anywhere for that matter. That tells me a lot of programs aren't as sold on his talent as the recruiting sites are.
MSU's recruiting is strange. They didn't go after Donovan Johnson last year but he's good enough for Penn State. They also didn't pursue Tyrone Sampson or (iinm) Marquan McCall this year.
Very skeptical of any of these aggregates. There is no reliable reporter of offers--all info comes from various insiders. If JKP gets an offer from TAMU late in the process and doesn't care enough to report it does anyone every know about it? Also, an "offer" is not always a commitable offer.
I mean, it's not really a record that's going to go down in the history books at Guinness.
Not all info comes from various insiders - a lot of info comes from the players themselves.
Sometimes an "offer" isn't an "OFFER" but that's always been the case.
DJP, Drake Harris, Brian Cole, Malik McDowell, and Mike Weber all went down to the last minute before truly committing. Not saying it's not true, but I don't believe it.
If you're a small local school (WMU, for example), you're going to offer elite in-state guys just on the off chance that you build a relationship with the school and you're sitting there if something goes wrong. Matt Falcon wasn't going to WMU if not for the fact that he kept getting injured. There's an inherent advantage for a local school.
San Diego State, San Jose State, Texas State, Rice, Arkansas State, Florida Atlantic, etc. often aren't going to bother offering elite kids from the State of Michigan. If DPJ, Drake Harris, etc. are going that far away from home, they're going to pick USC or Florida State.
I'm sure there's guys with more in the past, but they didn't report them or committed early and didn't keep track of other new offers. Taking it with a grain of salt.
Whats the quality of the offers? He's a top 200ish guy from Detroit who doesn't have a real offer from Michigan or OSU so that tells me about all I need to know. Michigan obviously took a pass on him and given our recent love for tall corners and our hit rate on small Detroit cornerbacks, are we really surprised?
you're perception of height is unreal! You saw him play and you're saying he is between 5'9 and 5'9 1/4??
GO BLUE!!
Kids can say whatever they want. They can also go all around the country on unofficial visits to gather "offers" from schools.
He may be good. He may not. But, the important take away from his number of offers is...... nothing.
It's like claiming the highest amount of text messages from defensive coordinators, or the most "college jerseys tried on during recruting visits," etc.
Kid just got a Bama offer. According to 247, he has ND, Bama, LSU, OSU, Oklahoma, PSU... He's legit.
He is a four star.
I get your point, you just overstated the living shit out of it.
