OT: Danny O'Brien Dismissed from Vols Football team
Just saw that Senior starting defensive tackle, and Michigan native / former target, Danny O'brien was dismissed by Butch Jones from the TN football team for vague "violation of team rules". Danny was taken off the field by stretcher two days ago with an apparant concussion during Saturday's game. His dismissal is not related. Danny is a Senior and I hope for his future he gets his degree and learns from whatever mistake was made (as we all have done). My best to this Michigander and I remember hoping he would don the Maize and Blue.

Did he kill a nurse in the hospital?

I'm not sure that would warrant his dismissal... on THAT team.

There's a reason it's called the "Fulmer Cup"
October 11th, 2016 at 9:59 AM ^
'The world's most prestigious college football award based on criminal record'. Named after Phillip Fulmer, former Tennesse Head Coach.
There is also the Switzer Sweep (after Barry Switzer) which is a national title, #1 recruiting class AND the fulmer cup.

what it takes to get kicked off of Tennessee's football team. Let's hope he was trying to support a victim of another teammate's actions. (It's a long shot considering a past suspension but you never know.)

One would hope he's already completed his degree and working to further his education. I hope he comes outta whatever this is a better person and good luck to him. We played against him (Flint Powers) in the playoffs in 2011.

That conservative atmosphere can be less forgiving. Michigan was too liberal for me, paraaphrasing but thats what I got out of the way he put it when he committed to the Vols.

I'm not sure the politics of a state have anything to do with how much crap football players can get away with. The University of Tennessee is relatively infamous for letting football players get away with just about anything without significant repercussions. On the other hand, there are schools in liberal states that have relatively strict standards, like Stanford.

I can't even really understand discgolfer's point. Does he mean politically liberal and conservative? Or the approach to behavior? It's not exactly the clearest comment.

Even with that information I can't quite figure out what the comment means. Is he saying that if O'Brien had gone to Michigan the "liberal" atmosphere would have allowed him to get away with more?
I'm probably spending more time than necessary thinking about this.

He wasn't talking about permissiveness. He was talking about politics. This kid had a politically/religiously conservative upbringing near Flint and made a stink during his recruitment about how Michigan didn't offer that. So he went to Tennessee. Given the DL haul we've had, he probably wouldn't have played much here anyway.

He goes to a school in the SEC. Interesting.

I've ever heard that as a reason for not picking Michigan football. But I suppose it's not the first time someone has decided to go elsewhere because of that. He may have been the only who came out publicly about it. Whatever.

I bet his choice had nothing do with politics. This sounds like a cover story.

Missed opportunity: He could have helped design the Hair Jordan line of hair shirt apparel, and lined up a sweet endorsement deal upon graduation.

Let's see...maybe Danny felt he needed more discipline but misunderstood the Liberal/Conservative troup and thought Tennesee would be best for him life-wise.

Thats exactly what I was trying to say. I wrote a much longer explanation but it would have been negged more anyway. I am happy you did get it and I will try to be more clear and never, never go near politics again. I am going to end up in Bolivia because I was very political on another thread and it REALLY ruffled some feathers but I thought I was safe with what I said today but this is CLEARLY not (for me) a place to even mention something that could be construed remotely as political. I don't believe I got a ban hammer email but why play in traffic and could be a second strike and besides from what I can tell the politics in Bolivia are corrupt. Tongue in cheek fellas c'mon man we are winning 6-0, and as always Go Blue!

I think the point is that "liberal" communities like Ann Arbor or San Francisco defend women against various kinds of assault by men, whereas in "conservative" communities men are allowed to get away with more bad behavior toward women. So in places like Chattannooga men are free to grope and kiss women against their will, whereas in Ann Arbor women are free from such assaults. There was a Peyton Manning (while at UT) thing earlier this year that illustrates the differencce clearly.

That was horrible, but I don't see how it has anything to do with Stanford's disciplinary procedures.

Stanford didn't sentence him to prison. They kicked him out of school and banned him from campus within two weeks of the incident. I'm not sure what else you expect them to do.
