That One Last '13 Spot

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
So with the tight end from TE from TX committing to ND we're sitting with one open spot in the class and a week to go. Those of you who are far more recruiting oriented hearing anything about any late offers/visits etc for that last spot?

I think they sit tight, there's a full class that's locked down with no other real needs.  If Poggi flips, then I think they might try to pull Kenton Gibbs, but otherwise I'd be surprised if there was any further movement.

I'm a little late to the party with this thread, but does anyone know what colleges his dad has taken these trips to in the past?

If he's taken similar trips to top 10 schools before, then this makes perfect sense.  If his previous trips have primarily been to D2 type schools or some Atlantic 10 type schools, then this trip is an outlier.  If that's the case, is this trip a cover to get his kid on Alabama's campus for a visit while still reserving his committment to Michigan?

Thanks.  It would seem awfully backhanded, but I also am surprised that a HS coach would tweet something negative about a whole conference's recruiting ability.  I was really skeptical that it was really his twitter account, but someone on this thread said that Gillman Football retweeted it.  That leads me to think that maybe he really did tweet it.

I'd love to have the kid here, as part of this class.  If he thinks he's better off at Alabama, then so be it.  Good luck to him.

Bama interwebs report that they have more interest in a JUCO DL currently commited to Ole Miss.  And here's their take on the visit:

The only other official visitor in town in addition to Reed was Michigan commit Henry Poggi. The Baltimore/Gilman School defensive lineman and his camp have been very quiet heading into the visit, with pressure coming from Michigan’s end as they have a no-visit policy for their commits. One thing is for sure though- this trip was much more than a casual jaunt to see former teammate and current UA player, Cyrus Jones. Sources indicate Henry’s father and head coach, Biff Poggi, had a lot of questions on the visit and playing in the SEC is a big pull for the Poggis. That said, it’s no secret that UA’s numbers are very tight at this juncture. We’ve mentioned several times before that the UA staff will have to make some tough decisions down the stretch and this could be the close call that we’ve been referring to.

while we may never see the attrition of the RR era,  we need to get athletes on campus and develop them.  i do not expect  M to "cut' players but there will be players who leave when they realize they will not develop.

However, we're not like Alabama.  We don't cut scholarship athletes for underperforming, which means when the coaches accept a commitment from a recruit that the coaching staff is also committing to having that player on the team for the next 4 years.  If the coaches aren't comfortable with making that committment to a lesser known recruit then banking it is the right move.

Saying biff poggi posted negative tweets about big ten recruiting. I don't tweet and am sure people can start misleading twitter accounts. I also take very little from anything I read on rcmb. Anyone else hear about this? I hate when adults do stupid kid things on the Internet, hopefully it is nothing.

so I don't know if I believe that was really Biff.  I mean he didn't seem to have a problem with the Big Ten before, I mean come on his other son plays for Iowa.  If it was him, and he's letting the SEC sweet talk him, then that just show's how dumb he is.

I think they bank the last scholarship.  They will be having a small class next year anyway.  Like someone said earlier in the post, all the needs were met in this class.

Agree.  Unless some big time WR, CB, or even a TE falls in their lap on signing day, just bank it.  We're not going to have a huge class next year, and taking kids just as filler doesn't make sense at this point.  Unless the coaches are expecting some attrition or something, but I really hope this isn't the case.

Can any recruiting wonk say what the "needs" are for next year.

How many spots are we lookign at, and ideally what positions will make up those spots?

Obviously a lot can change before that point- but a guess as to what the needs are for the next class as it stands now...
