Ohio has 13 All-Big Ten Defensive Players

...as selected by the media if you include honorable mentions.

Can someone explain to me how that happens? Their defense was so awesome that guys on the bench are All-Big Ten too?

Ha ha ha ha. Wonderful. They should just declare their whole team as All B1G. They can shine their trophy at home this weekend while they watch us kick Iowa's Ass with our stars.

In all seriousness though, there is a lot of confirmation bias in these picks. I think if Dax Hill is not a five star recruit that there is no way he makes it to first-team all-big ten. I'm not saying that he didn't have a good year, just that it wasn't flashy. Like I think Hawkins was equally as deserving as a spot on the first or second team.

Hawkins has been able to do his job well because Macdonald puts him in a position to succeed, unlike Don Brown who would put him 1 on 1 with guys way faster than him. Macdonald gives Dax Hill extremely difficult assignments that allow Hawkins to do what Mattison had Jarrod Wilson do.

Hawkins definitely deserves respect and appreciation from all Michigan fans, but he's not one of the best safeties in the conference. Dax Hill is one of the best DBs in the nation. He dissuades teams from running those annoying WR screens, he covers slot jitterbugs and big TEs, and then he's responsible for preventing any runs to the outside. I would call him a Swiss Army Knife player but that's not really fair because a Swiss Army Knife performs many actions but is mediocre at all of them. Dax Hill performs many actions and is stellar at all of them.

Dax Hill may not have had a "flashy" year, but I guarantee that for every Ojabo and Hutchinson sack you could look at what Hill was doing and see why that QB had to hang on to the football for a second too long. We owe a lot of our success this year to Dax Hill.

This is kind of like how OSU fans bitched in 2016 that Peppers shouldn't have been a Heisman finalist "bEcaUsE hE oNlY hAd OnE iNteRcEpTiOn!!1!" while ignoring that he was the lynchpin of that defense because he shut off edge stuff (like Hill does), while setting the edge on running plays AND terrorizing the QB on blitzes, not to mention his special teams acumen.

Thanks for this. Looking at the list, it's not quite as bad as OP makes it out to be.

1st team: Haskell Garrett (DT)

2nd team: Zach Harrison (DE)

3rd team: Tyreke Smith (DE), Ronnie Hickman (S)

The other 9 (which is, admittedly, a very large number) are all HM.

Then again, I don't know what the criteria are to be considered HM. Maybe if you get 2 votes, you're HM.

Wisconsin has 11 (8 HM), PSU has 10 (7 HM), Iowa has 8 (3 HM), Michigan has 9 (3 HM).

And I didn't feel like counting the rest.

Call it the "Bucky Dent" effect - for those not familiar with that name, Dent was a slick fielding but so-so hitting SS (under .250 lifetime average) for the late 1970s-early 1980s Yankees, when they were WS champs in 77/78 and lost WS in 81. Bucky had ONE big hit in his life (3 run HR down 2-0 vs. Boston in one-game playoff for AL East title in 78, see "Bucky F-ing Dent" on Youtube).

Dent would get hundreds of 1000s of votes from Yankee fans and started AS games, even while players with FAR better resumes (including two HOFs Alan Trammell and Robin Yount) couldn't get voted in and had to be added to the roster.

"The" OSU certainly has talent but has guys running the D who remind me of the dark ages of GERG.

The media poll is actually saying that Michigan has THE MOST 1st - 3rd Team All Big Ten Players.

The Media voted for a lot more "All Big Ten" Defensive players than the Coaches as it has included a lot more Honorable Mentions.  So for instance in the Media Vote, Ohio State has the highest number of players, but 9/13 are honorable mentions...  That leaves four 1st - 3rd Team Players.  Michigan has 3/9 players listed as HMs... meaning that they have six 1st - 3rd Team Players.

Thanks for details, title of this thread is inaccurate based on my interpretation, I don't consider Honorable mention to be all conference, I'd count only 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I consider Honorable Mention is still a... Honor, but essentially saying you didn't make all conference but you played great and think you deserve some recognition.

Dude, Shaun Wade was DB of the year in the B1G and was a 1st team all American last year. He. Was. Terrible last year. It’s so laughable that they see OSU and give them a spot. Banks and Shaw were awful this year and somehow got a spot. It’s a sham. Media knows nothing.
