Official ND press release, press conference at 6 pm
can't imagine what it's like to be an ND fan. ALL KINDS OF SUFFERING. I mean, they've gone 3-9, they've had undefeated seasons only to be crushed by alabama, they've had all-americans become laughing stocks (Teo), they've had Charlie Weis and Ty Willingham, they've had crushingly close losses (2005 USC, 2011 Michigan), they've had transfers of critical recruits, explusions of starting players, they've had long stretches of apathy and inept play, they've had...I mean, what haven't they had?
There. I said it.
Weis was worse than Rodriguez IMO
Why, why, why do people spell Rodriguez with a "q"? I really don't get it. Was that just a typo? Is that how you pronounce it? Is there a joke I don't get? Is it actually a "g" on some crazy keyboard?
It's so common and I don't understand it at all.
See person with actual reason below.
You see a lot of odd letter changes in surnames.
As far as I am aware, and this is just a non-specific observation, "Rodriquez" is a rare variant - "Rodriques" is a little more common in my own experience. They all basically go back to patronymic "son of Roderick", or rather the Spanish equivalent. Anyway, the error might come from that, but again, it seems like that particular variation is relatively uncommon. I could be wrong though.
Living in LA, I've seen lots and lots of people with the last name Rodriguez, and I've never seen it spelled with a "q." Also, it would be pronounced quite differently, so it's not like messing up Goldberg and Goldburg, for example.
Also, they aren't horribly different in English. 'Gez' versus 'kez'?
Happy hour here, so maybe I'm way off.
In Spanish, when a g is followed by a u, the g is hardly pronounced. For example, the word "guero" sounds like it's spelled "wehdo." However, a qu will make a hard k sound.
I'm not saying it's crazy different, but different enough that you won't confuse one for the other if it's pronounced correctly. I doubt that poster pronounced it Rich Rodrikez.
off the top of my head, queiro and que both start with q and are followed by u but the k sound is much less distinct in quiero than que. In the former the sharp whip like k sound is less prominent.
In the instance of rodriguez versus rodriquez I believe the q would be less sharp and blend more into the word like the g does.
But as I alluded to, just spitballing here.
The difference in que and quiero have a lot to do with emphasis, not necessarily spelling.
Say "Rico" and then say "Rigo." Can you tell a difference?
The only point (more of an observation) that I was trying to make is that some qu words abandon the k sound in favor of emphasing the subsequent letters like g does at times, e.g fringe versus tragic.
But even when that's the case, you can certainly hear the difference.
/g/ and /k/ are similar sounds, pronounced in the same part of the mouth with the tongue in the same position. The difference is /g/ is voiced (vocal cords vibrate) and /k/ is voiceless (vocal cords not used).
Guero has to be written with "diéresis" or this two little dot fellas: ü. Güero, what those dots do is to let you know that in that case the u must be pronounced, Guero would be said something like ghe-ro and Güero would be something like weh-ro. Same with a few words like pingüino (penguin).
I flew out of John Wayne last night. Had a great time in Newport.
because everyone of spanish decent lives in L.A.
I think Rodrigues is the Portguese spelling and Rodriguez the (Castillian) Spanish spelling. Not positive though.
I always thought it was because of Boogie Nights.
If you are going to bring up Rich Rod in a thread that had nothing to do with him, be sure to bring up the people who sabotaged his regime behind the scenes and the fact that he could have done just as well with his first senior class in 2011 as Hoke did. Also make sure to bring up the fact that Hoke was allowed to choose his own DC and pay him more than twice what RR was allowed to pay his.
This does still raise a question: why is anyone bringing up the RR years in a discussion about ND and academic fraud?
Whoa, you're the only one really bringing it up.
And maybe RR didn't pay his DC as much because he didn't hire one worth it? Or maybe Hoke can because Dave Brandon let him, but then that would mean that DB isn't the devil, so that can't be it.
We will never know how well RR would have done in 2011. But without anyone to coach defense, I doubt he would have done as well.
MrsStephenKass was the one who brought up Rich Rod.
As you said we will never know how he would have done in 2011. IMO you have to give RR some credit for that season as the bulk of the team were developed by him and his staff for three years. Also, the defense was a year older and brought back many of the same players which is why so many were apprehensive for Hoke's first year. I do think Hoke and staff should also get a lot lf credit for that year.
In 2011, the blame/credit could plausibly be put on the prior regime. It is getting harder to do so by the year though the lack of OLinemen is a big thing to lay at RR's feet. Although it seems like spread systems don't rely as much as pro systems do. If you miss a single assignment in pro systems you could be screwed whereas in spread that may not be as much of the case.
Starting next year I think all the successes and failures of the program should be laid at Hoke and his staff's feet. No excuses.
I kind of miss Rich Rod
This has become the new subway/Quiznos thread...
Don't you mean Guizno's?
What is: A MNC since 1988?
I mean, I wrote that off the top of my head, I'm sure theres tons of stuff I'm leaving out.
No, he covered that.
I would be too if I was him
has always been the biggest false hype machine in America. (We're closing in quickly btw). A program with more hype than substance, their mysery is largely self inflicted by being pompous, high and mighty pricks.
ND can recognize whatever they want, but the NCAA won't and therefore when comparing schools, ND will have fewer. For schools like ND, that's a punishment.
Florida State was up there until last year
there is some sarcasm in here I am missing in relation to things Michigan has gone thru as well
They've never had massive academic fraud...oh wait...that just happened? AND they've lost to Gerg Robinson? Yeah they're basically boned....
Makes me smile
Let's be fair, the statement is the most adult statement in modern college football. I mean, Miami basically said "come at me nerds" in its official response to its mess a couple years ago.
That investigation is ongoing. If it determines that the student-athletes would have been ineligible during past competition, Notre Dame will voluntarily vacate any victories in which they participated.
is the most non-punishment out there. No one actually vacates wins or erases them from their record books. They disappear for awhile, then reappear at a later date once people have forgotten.
That won't happen anytime soon in this case, since ND and Michigan are constantly comparing their W-L records. We'll make sure that no one forgets.
Oh really? So the Final Four banners in Crisler are just invisible then?
According to ND's statement, the 4 players are just being held out during the investigation, and haven't been dismissed.
s c a N D a l.
Insert Chris Hardwick.
I am LITERALLY getting a bag of popcorn, kicking the kids off the TV and watching this PC like it's dubya-dubya-III
Kicking the kids off the TV? What kind of a father are you?
I intend to watch, and not for the schadenfreude.
It looks as though the site the OP linked to will be running it (there's now a video screen, and while currently it's blacked out you can hear people moving around, etc., so it looks like it will "go live" at 6 pm). So
- Click on the link, start the video, and open your popcorn as you watch the show.
Bye bye Purple Head Assplosion????
I know but it's Friday night margarita happy hour and I'm all in.
It will be live on ESPN right now.
Anyone see Phork in a while?
He made an appearance in the first thread on ND today.
Don't hate. He's reasonable. Why can't more be like him?
And he wasn't horrible there, but still.
edit: If more rival fans were like him I'd welcome them here, there or anywhere.
Oh, the piety!
"Several students including 4 football players" - so this is more than just the team.
"No one has been dismissed from the University." - so those 4 are only "being held out" as the Father said.
"Papers and homework that was written for them by others."
"Suspicions arose July 29th"
"Jack had a conversation with Brian yesterday, but we have great confidence in Brian, his staff, and they have been nothing but supportive"
My biggest question is what the connection is (if there is one) between Golson and the current situation.
wake up the echoes, my calculus homework is due

I was actually pretty impressed with what they had to say. They didn't try to dodge anything.
Seriously? I thought they said absolutely nothing. I don't think I learned a single thing from that press conference.
Well the questions weren't exactly in depth. IDK, they seemed pretty forthright that impropriety was going on, and even acknowledged that it may go back further than the past few years. I wouldn't expect either of the two to just volunteer everything, but they weren't evasive.
They didn't admit anything was going on except an investigation. They didn't admit to anything that wasn't said in the press release. Any question that asked anything was shot down. I learned absolutely nothing new from the press conference.
deciding they needed to say something to make them feel important and to let people know "they are on it".
blah, blah, nothing, blah, blah, nothing, nothing, nothing. Oh and Kelly didn't know anything he was devasted.
I thought that was absolutely worthless. Why have a press conference if you don't intend to answer any questions? Might as well just have a press release. Every real question was answered with "I don't want to speculate" or "We aren't prepared to answer that at this time."
I also love how he emphasized that this was an academic issue, not an athletics issue. Oh yeah? You hold a press release every time students are investigated for cheating?
EDIT: With the athletic director present.
They didn't say anything. They didn't even say when the alleged fraud occurred, even though the players obviously handed in suspicious papers at certain points in time. Papers are dated. It was all a big stonewall.
Maybe they just want to get all of the facts that they can, before they start opening Pandora's Box. I'm not trying to defend ND, of all schools, but I'm reserving judgement for now.
Really no suspensions?!? What in ever living hell!!! So much for ND being a upstanding school
Did they really say no suspensions were coming or was it more of a "not with the team" thing for the current players like we are going through with York? The latter seems more likely. I would guess the 4 in question have access to a formal process for appeal etc. as this seems to be much more of a school/academic issue.
They basically said that other than holding them out of practice they weren't going to be punished until the investigation was complete.
Not really unreasonable considering the situation. I was actually a little surprised they confirm the 4 players by name even though it was all but confirmed when they weren't at practice.
The equivocation and excuses on the radio in Chicago is delicious.
Hey guys football is hard so yeah cheating is probably fine because they get up early.
They will keep winning?
Sec, you're back. Shouldn't you be talking sh*t about Hoke? I don't think I have ever seen a comment from u where u weren't talkin about Hoke
At one point, Swarbrick flat-out lied. He said we shouldn't confuse these allegations (cheating) with past cases such as Golson's. But although ND never actually said what Golson did -- officially, they chalked it up to "academic issues" -- Golson himself has acknowledged that he cheated on a test. Swarbrick is a lying douche.
I didn't catch that part.
He acknowledged Golson's issue as what it was but said it wasn't fair to lump all academic issues together as "this type of issue" meaning academic dishonesty. He said there have been cases of players not meeting grades but that there hasn't been rampant cheating as the question made it sound.
institution for a number of reasons. I hate to say it, but I'm glad they are on the hot plate right now.
right now this won't be resolved until after the ND/Michigan game.
1) This gives me the same level of elation I get after M soundly defeats an inferior opponent. 2) There but for the grace of Dog goes M. 3) Props to the Domers for going publice with the painfully unpleaseant discoveries they made while doing their own internal investigation. At other schools, maybe they wouldn't do this kind of investigation ... or if they do, maybe they cover it up. ND seems to have taken the high road.
Yes, the rule of threes.
1) This gives me the same level of elation I get after M soundly defeats an inferior opponent. 2) There but for the grace of Dog goes M. 3) Props to the Domers for going public with the painfully unpleaseant discoveries they made while doing their own internal investigation, and then severely punishing themselves. ND seems to have taken the high road.
Er... So the rule of sixes?
You can say that again.
Write one for the Gipper!
(In honor of ND, I stole this from another board).
Just for perspective, the news of this first broke at noon. Let us just get through our own off season without trouble or injury.
I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I have been on the wrong side of the karma train since the Bob Davie era, but that I guess that's to be expected after all that horse shit luck 'o Irish stuff under Holtz (f'ing Rocket Ismail). That being said, its not even fun to give ND fans a hard time anymore. Not that we can throw stones from our glass house, but this horse has been beaten to death for the better part of two decades.
I beg to disagree
Was Teo's girlfriend there?
Plagiarize Like A Champion Today.
I'm sorry to hear that, though.
The Cheatin' Irish
FIGTHING IRISH. I just wish I actually had the cup so I could continue to give my Notre Shame rooting friends a hard time.
This isn't going to end well.
