I was in the stands in 1991 when FSU came to Ann Arbor and laid that 51-31 butt-kicking on us in front of a national TV audience. It was embarassing - and I never got sick of anything as much as I got sick of that stupid tomahawk chant (or whatever the hell they call it).
So while this may not be the spot in the final four that we wanted, here's a chance for some payback that's been brewing for 25 years.
Go Blue.

A month ago it was CFP or Rose at worst.... this feels like a big step down
December 4th, 2016 at 2:41 PM ^
The Rose Bowl doesn't carry the same significance anymore when it has the Pac-12 runner-up. The matchup matters more than the bowl if you are not in the CFP.
December 4th, 2016 at 3:10 PM ^
Not even the Pac-12 runner up. Third place, just like FSU.
I am also honestly not sure anyone not from the Midwest really thinks there is a huge difference in prestige between the Rose/Sugar/Orange Bowls. All three are relatively ancient and have always been the destinations for major conference winners through all iterations of the CFB post-season. Just as many classic games have been won in Orange as the Rose if you take your B1G blinders off.

It's a big step down. But that doesnt mean you can't get excited for another UM football game, against another marquee program, and another chance to show off Michigan football to the world.
December 4th, 2016 at 2:47 PM ^
i'll certainly be watching and excited for a win but it'll still feel like a pretty big let down from where i thought this team would finish 4 weeks ago

This program was in the wilderness for 10 years after 2006. After that decade, how can you not be excited right now even with the disappointing finish in the Game?

More exciting opponent this time.

This is way better than backing into the Sugar Bowl against a mediocre at best VT team.

Stuff like this makes me question if people actually watch the games week in and week out.
That 2011 team felt lucky. This team felt great. That team was lucky to make a BCS bowl. This team is mildly disappointed to only be NY6. The 2011 VT team was ranked around 15 all season in a bad ACC, the Seminoles were projected to make the playoff and finished their season strongly in a good conference
The two are night and day.

3 weeks ago we were considered the #2 team in the country and a probable lock for the CFP. Now, out and playing in now what has become a lower-rung bowl. Yes, progress has been better than expected but the new goal is the national championship, not just the CFP. Do you think JH is patting himself on the back over this? This type of attitude has no place in this program. We should no longer settle for "moral victories". A famous person once said "Show me a good loser (ie-content) and I'll show you a loser". No points for second place.
December 4th, 2016 at 6:47 PM ^
I was talking about the direction of the program and where it is in year 2 of Harbaugh. You can be disappointed about the result in the Game & not achieving the goal of winning the B1G and still be excited about where the program is going. JH may not be patting himself on the back, but he probably also isn't acting like a bunch of babies like so many posters in this thread.
This is only the beginning. People are acting like this was Harbaugh's last chance at a winner and the most talented team he is ever going to coach. This team is lacking talent on offense & it showed down the stretch.
And we were never a lock at an point in the season for the the CFP. The CFP bid was always going to come down to a 50/50 game in Columbus. Obviously disappointed Michigan didn't make enough plays to win and make the CFP, but it doesn't change the fact this is best bowl game Michigan has been in since 2006. It is an opportunity we missed out on for 10 years that I am surprised so many fans have quickly forgotten.

If you thought this was UM's year then you are guilty of deluding yourself. UM still is clawing itself out of the mess Hoke created.

that with an elite defense it would more than make up for it. This is not some team filled with low-level talent. This was a team loaded with NFL talent. There will be 10+ people drafted from this team. To finish with losses to Iowa and OSU it's disappointing.

legitimatelybetter than UM this year. Yes, O-line is mediocre, but we are also the 2nd best team in the country when we assess the entirety of the team, season, and schedule .
It would take an amazing game to upset Bama, but anything can happen. Every other team has glaring weaknesses. Our defense would keep us in the game with anyone.
FSU is a step down from what we wanted.

Remember the bowl we were in just two short years ago? Yeah, neither do I. Here's hoping every year with Harbaugh a New Year's 6 bowl feels like a letdown.

voting overrated Clemson most of the year, sure he had Clemson no lower than 2. Hope we make him pay for this disrespect in the Orange Bowl.

Definitely payback. The game in '91 was the first big match up that I attended and Terrell Buckley ruined it.

The CFP semifinals are in December too. Would you be bummed about that as well?
