Now is the time for Brandon to be vocal about RR future

Submitted by stillMichigan on

Dave Brandon could do Michigan football a huge favor by publicly backing RR. The truth is, Rich has the players on board and sold and trying to sell recruits to be able to make the leap to next level- perenial top 10. Is Brandon sold? He should be. And if he isn't we can't blame any recruits for shying away from the program.

He is a business man selling a product? The Michigan football brand. Is that what it's about for him? Money some say. Well what better way to endorse his own product. He's saying now- I like Domino's now but next year I'm gonna see if it still tastes good. That may be sort of extreme but I see a correlation. He was very public as CEO of Domino's and it worked. I'm not saying throw the sanctions letter in the pizza oven, but how bout something positive bout Rich's future?

A public vote of confidence would be a huge boost to the current team and would shut up the national (and local) media about if the hot seat cooling off bull. Brandon is a man respected by most and he seems to still be on the fence. At least that is the perception. A strong showing of support by Brandon would shut up some of the negative recruiting tactics.

Our future the next 2 years looks very bright. We will get better. Rich is the reason we are one of the top stories on the college football landscape this year and on the rise. Do the right thing Dave. For Rich, the team and recruits who may be on the fence. The team is all-in. Is Dave?

...but he also needs to take the conservative, cautious approach. What if RR loses nearly all the B10 games again (due to injuries, etc...). That would put Brandon in a precarious position that he's too smart to get into.

Hasn't he done that already?

“The first thing I have done and will continue to do is I support my coach. I respect the position of coach, I respect the challenges of the job, and I respect him, and I defend him, and I support him in every way I can. I did in Seattle (for the NCAA infractions hearing). I have publicly. I have privately. Rich Rodriguez is the coach of the University of Michigan football team, and he’s working extremely hard. He cares.”

A good business-person doesn't get caught up in knee jerk reactions. Let this play out and RR won't need a vote of confidence. On the other hand, Brandon jumps in with a 'vote of confidence' and things fall apart. Now he's stuck.

I'm as giddy as the next person about the last two weeks. Let's just enjoy this one and not get caught up in everything else. As everyone's always said, winning will cure everything.

for 10 years.

Cost ND $millions. You could have had this same thread last year. Don put it best in another thread, let's be cautiously optimistic, we haven't won 3 games yet this year.

It wasn't even after a year, but in the middle of his first season that he received the extension.  But I agree with your cautiously optimistic approach... lets play out the year and see where we are.  I hope RR does receive an extension, I've liked the hire from day 1, but I think we should wait until after his first successful season to give it to him.

You make a good point. But now may still be a little too early on to make such a statement. I have all of the confidence in the world for the team, but we need to keep winning first. I think once we are bowl eligible (after MSU of course) is when you will see some of this brought up again and probably by DB himself.

No, it's not. If Rodriguez goes 2-10 this season, I don't think most of us would want him back. Once the season is over, the results of the NCAA crap is in, and we've got all the info we can trust Brandon to make the right decision. Not before that.

No, now is not the time for Brandon to say ANYTHING about RR's future.  In fact, the best thing that Brandon can do is just not mention the topic, at all (as he has been doing).  The less that is spoken about RR's future, the better.  If he keeps winning, nobody will speak of it, at all, and the topic will just go away.

The fact is that the best way for Michigan to sell itself to recruits is to do exactly what it has done for the past two weeks - win football games.  I think that seeing an exciting, winning team on TV (having the hottest QB in college FB constantly mentioned on ESPN doesn't hurt, either) will go a lot farther than what the AD says.

Did anyone notice that ESPN picked up the Bowling Green game?  Probably wasn't enough time to grab UMass.

continuing to win games and increase media, especially TV exposure is the best way to thrill a top talent recruit.

The path to the NFL is exposure, if this season stalls it goes away, if the wins continue it will just build,

until that last game...

RR has to win 8 games to get the extension.  At that point, he should and THAT is when he comes out.

Not before, it's silly to even think about it any other way.

Really?  I disagree.  First, I don't think there is any set formula or indicator as to whether Rodriguez stay (or at least there should not be, in my opinion).  Second, if there is some set number of wins that must be attained, I can't imagine that 8 would be that magic number.  Personally, a 6-6 season would be a great improvement over next year, especially if one of those wins include MSU or OSU.  But that's must my humble opinion, for what its worth.

I think the commenter above suggested 8 should be enough to get an extension, not necessarily the requirement for RR to keep his job.  This year is not the last year of his contract, RR could get 6 (or 5 or 4 or hell, 2) wins and be brought back next year without a contract extension.

Section 1

September 16th, 2010 at 11:54 AM ^

Which is:

  • Privately express to Rich Rodriguez his genuine, unqualified, full support and confidence;
  • Watch for signs of continuted improvement and quality with the program, and;
  • At the end of this year, award Coach Rodriguez a substantial new contract extension.

btw, "injuries," and "numbers of wins" don't matter.

The last thing that would be good for Brandon's image would be to give the knee jerk reaction right now. What would that say about him, that winning is the only important thing for this program. From what we know the safety of RR's job is based on much more than that. With a few transfers over the last few weeks and NCAA penalties looming I would say two good wins doesn't gurantee anything yet.

I understand the thought process here - job security for the coach should lead to landing some of these recruits. However, as TomVH has put it in his updated - "Just Win." If UM starts off 5-0, which seems very likely, and then beat State, we'll be 6-0, finally have beaten Sparty with RR and (amazingly, finally) bowl eligible. That to me seems like the time he'd announce. Also, you bet DB is waiting for the NCAA to make their final decision as well. He has an out in RR's contract that he can fire for cause if the UM is put on probation, etc. You better bet RR's attorney's / agent will try to get this removed from the next contract if this passes over as well. So, to quote my grandfather, "We shall see."

Why would RR want to remove the clause that allows him to be fired if UM is put on probation?  Because he is planning on violating NCAA rules!!!  Nuts to that.  He will be just fine with  the provision remaining in an extension because he will want to assure Brandon that he will run a very clean program.

But I disagree completely.  Brandon making a point of it right now would actually serve more as a distraction to RR, which RR really does not need.  You'd then have people asking him about what kinds of conversations he and Brandon had, what the "lower limit" is for him to keep his job, etc.  No, Brandon is a savvy fellow.  He'll stay out of the spotlight and let RR do his thing.  Depending on when the NCAA releases a statement on the infractions and the magnitude, Brandon will then make a statement.  Barring that, you can (hopefully) expect to hear nothing further on the topic until the end of the season.

Take a chill pill. I am thrilled to see Michigan doing well. Loved the ND game. However . . .

  • Denard hasn't won the Heisman yet.
  • We still have 10 games to play . . . that's why you play the games.
  • We are paperthin in secondary depth. Just pray (if you pray) that we don't have any critical injuries. Among others, I think we are ill-equipped to lose:
  • Denard
  • Molk
  • Lloyd, Gordon, anyone in the secondary
  • Mouton
  • Martin
  • Roe

DB is better working in the background, not in the media.

I didn't like it when many here were clamoring for Carr to speak up for RR, and I don't like it any more now with thinking DB should spout off publicly after 2 lousy wins.

It has been said many times before, and needs to be said again:  WINNING WILL FIX EVERYTHING. RR is a big boy, his players love him, he has great facilities, he is set. I believe that 2010 he will clearly have a solid winning schedule, and 2011 will be the year we have clearly returned to the elite, regularly in the hunt for the MNC. I said this last year, and still believe it. We are on the threshold of glory years for Michigan that haven't been experienced in any of our lifetimes. My only advice is for people to snap up club seats and suites and season tickets today, because they aren't going to be available much longer.

I'm not giddy yet. (Well, I am very happy for Denard, and other guys showing year to year improvement: e.g., Jonas and Obi.)

I still remember last year's start. I fully support Rich and our team, but they have to show us they can handle the Big Ten slate (and they know this, and I support them like hell as they try).

Either way, David Brandon has stood up for Rich already: in very dark hours. Right now is a good time to stand back and let the positive light shine where it should: on Rich and his coaching staff (and the leadership on the team) because they appear to have done a great job of bringing these guys along year to year.

Let people buy thier own way in for a while, and then speak up down the line and confirm the conclusions they made.

Peeps on here are preaching to the choir.  Seen Bo coach and his assistants ( who have gone on to do great things in coaching)great fundamentals.  NOW it is RR's turn.  Knew it wouldnt happen over night, but moving ahead.  He is in the hotseat tho....

After our stellar performance this year(whatever our record ends up) what do u do with Tate and Devin?  I'm sure ND would love to have either right about now?  What do u think?

"Dave Brandon could do Michigan football a huge favor by publicly backing RR."

He *has* publicly backed RR.

Only hillbilly schools have emotional ADs that make spectacles of themselves.  I don't expect that from Brandon.

I guess appearing on the sidelines at games, handling the political side of UM, and literally supporting Rodriguez in press conferences isn't good enough for you?  And after last year he's being smart in the midst of all the kool-aid drinking going on.  It is unlikely that RR won't be back next year, but mindlessly making decisions based on the weekly hype trail is always stupid.

No more statements need to be made by anyone except for the Michigan football team and coaching staff in the form of a favorable score board at 00:00.

Just my opinion.

...it's all playing itself out even as we post.  I know we try not to assume anything here, but I am going to assume that, just as RR "didn't take stupid pills" when he came to Michigan, neither did Brandon.  I fully trust both of them to take care of the program and do the right thing.

As we all know, Brandon wore the maize and blue.  He has to be impressed with the teamwork and attidude of this team, because it is a team Bo would be proud of.  That should be enough for RR to be allowed to keep moving forward in Ann Arbor.

September 16th, 2010 at 1:54 PM ^

A lot of recruits want to know whether or not RR is going to be back next year before they make a decision.  Waiting around in limbo isn't helping anyone.  I hope that within the next couple of weeks Brandon lets the publick now that RR will be the football coach next year.  I don't see why he wouldn't want RR to be the coach, starting over again just puts this University back even more.  If we don't see anything after a probable 6-0 start then I won't know what to think.

"NO!"

Brandon should make no statement, especially when it is self-evident. In addition, by not making a statement at all, it will further show our backing for the coach all along.

Will say it again.... Rodriguez is BEST IN CLASS, and a Michigan Man. Why a Michigan Man?  Because both are BEST IN CLASS and they belong together.

We're 2-0!!!  Awesome!  That means that the NCAA has finished its review of our violations defense, that we beat MSU and maybe even OSU, and that there are no concerns with the program.  RR is magic!

Wait, in the land of reality, Dave Brandon is not the idiot the OP hopes he is.  We have a season to play, NCAA sanctions to deal with and a program to build.  The job is not done two games into the season just because Denard is a monster.  There is zero need to publicly tie the hands of the University in dealing with the coach until we've finished the season.  That was the case three weeks ago and will be the case throughout the season.

What happened to all the RR supporters screaming that there is no set number of games he must win to keep his job?  Now, it seems, the number is only 2 games.  Really?  And for those now seeking an extension...holy shit...it's a good thing we have a business person and not a rabid fan making decisions.  Let's sit back and watch how the season plays out.  Let's hope that the team continues winning and that our offense gets a bit more diversified.  Let's hope that the NCAA agrees with our defense and closes the case.  Let's hope that we pummel MSU and OSU.  Then, at the end of the season, Brandon will make a fully-informed decision about the coach.  Anything else would only serve to needlessly tie the hands of the University.

For those saying he "has" supported RR, I'm referring to the "he's our coach this year" statement he made. I wish he would just come off that is all. Im not calling for an extension or anything. And if he supports him publicly and is wrong, which is unlikely in my eyes, then he could fire him and say he was wrong. Whats the big deal. I just see how the benefits could outweigh the negatives. Positives were expressed in my original post. Negative? Make DB look bad.

dahblue

September 16th, 2010 at 2:59 PM ^

What are the positives?  Make RichRod feel warm and fuzzy even though, as you admit, it's a meaningless statement that DB can reverse.

The negatives?  How about making Michigan football look like we've never won two games before?  How about giving RR a stronger argument for wrongful termination should we need to part ways after this season?  Brandon is doing the right thing.  Let's allow the season to play out, and hopefully we'll have much to celebrate.

..and the big headliners don't usually commit until at least after their football season.  Winning more football games will open more doors to the kids houses.  An extension or vote of confidence would only pay off come signing day.
