Notre Dame fires their DC

I guess giving up 38 points to Duke is enough to get the axe

Two sources confirm report that Brian VanGorder has been terminated as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator.

This is Kelly trying to save his job. The rule seems to be:
"A coach on the hot seat may save his job for one (1) additional season by firing a coordinator, placing blame on the fired coordinator. This provision is valid on a per-employer basis."
September 25th, 2016 at 1:41 PM ^
RIght you are. I look at it more as candy ass Kelly trying to save his job. Guy is such a worthless schmuck. I had a dream I dated his hot daughter and had to have dinner at his place. I wanted to punch him the whole time.
September 25th, 2016 at 1:39 PM ^
Does that work when there is still 3/4 of the season left to demonstrate that this wasn't the problem? Haha...

Then bring hope. Wayne Fontes made a career out of it and wasted some talented Lions teams.
September 25th, 2016 at 1:49 PM ^
should cost Kelly his job. Sometimes you just have to make a move.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:03 PM ^
exactly. if Kelly didn't fire him people would slam him, and when he does fire him they still slam him
September 25th, 2016 at 2:43 PM ^
... and my DC
September 25th, 2016 at 2:10 PM ^
Didn't he blame this one entirely on the players and say the coaching was great or something?
That postgame presser isn't going to make anything easier on him.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:35 PM ^
I'm pretty sure he said the long snapper was OK.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:39 PM ^
Is Kelly really gunna get canned for a bad year though? They were in the Fiesta Bowl last year, are only a few years removed from the national title game (flukey though that season was). They haven't had any turrable years that I remember. After Davie/Willingham/Weiss garbage, this is the best they have been consistently since the Lou Holtttthhhhhz era.
September 25th, 2016 at 5:26 PM ^
yes they would fire him
September 25th, 2016 at 2:04 PM ^
She fired off a tweet that has since been deleted where she said F*** Notre Dame, F*** Brian Kelly. Hopefully someone got a screenshot.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:17 PM ^
Brian Kelly is pretty despicable. I hope the firing of the DC is just the tip of the iceberg of the problems there.
I was stunned when, after the game but on the field, Kelly had an intense, one-way discussion with his QB. To do that, in that setting... not the time nor the place.
Hope the guy loses his team.
September 25th, 2016 at 5:38 PM ^
in a freaking murder investigation at Central Michigan should have been that point you found him despicable.
September 25th, 2016 at 6:05 PM ^
He does that ALL. THE. TIME! I've remarked many times that I don't get how anyone would want to go play for that man and get screamed at on national TV every friggin' week.

Ha I like her style

Hey, 1-3...staring 6-6 straight in the face. SOMEBODY has to go and you know it's not going to be ol purple face.
September 25th, 2016 at 1:31 PM ^
Well, his defense was ND's main problem. Their defense is horrendous.

Not so good.
There was also a petition going around to get him fired.
...but hey, at least they'll always have this.

"We need more support underneath..."

buffalo would have fired the OC

Just made me laugh with that comment. Thanks.

Is it just me or was he voted most likely to be evil incarnate in high school?
He has one scary face.

Prospective career changes for this dude:
- Mafia hit man
- Craig's List predator
- Operate a meth lab
Others?

...playing Nice Pete on Achewood.

Kelly's press conference from last night where he said none of this was on the coaches and it was 100% on the players is particularly awesome now. To hell with Notre dame.

Michigan's DC Don Brown said regarding Colorado - all the mistakes are his.
Brown and Greg Mattison are all class. Brian Kelly, not so much.
September 25th, 2016 at 3:29 PM ^
After they got thrashed by Louisville Jimbo told the press and his players that was 100% the coach's fault. That's how you keep a team.
September 25th, 2016 at 5:40 PM ^
that game, I completely agree with Jimbo, FSU looked totally anad completely unprepared for that game on both sides of the ball.
September 25th, 2016 at 3:58 PM ^
I don't like Kelly at all, and generally like coaches taking all the blame, but sometimes it IS on the players, it was their fault, etc.
September 25th, 2016 at 8:19 PM ^
Not publicly. Behind the scenes, fine. Praise in public, criticize in private. That's the only way to be a successful leader.
September 25th, 2016 at 1:32 PM ^
Im sure Bama will bring him in as a consultant of sort.

I wonder how much rope Brady Hoke will get at Oregon?
I love his comments after the Colorado loss where the defense got torched:
Defensive coordinator Brady Hoke said the Ducks didn’t tackle well enough and cited NCAA rules that prohibit how much tackling teams can do in practice.

Is this for real?

Helfrich is probably gone at the end of the year. They will join the Tom Herman sweepstakes but will likely hire Scott Frost
September 25th, 2016 at 2:00 PM ^
It'll be interesting to see what happens at Oregon. Heard somewhere recently (Solid Verbal podcast maybe?) that they haven't fired a coach since the late 70s. So no one really knows how long the leash on Helfrich actually is.

They haven't had any legitimate reason to fire a coach since at least the early '90s. Brooks and Kelly left for the NFL, Bellotti left for AD position. Whatever their '80s culture was is irrelevant now.
September 25th, 2016 at 4:18 PM ^
Probably Solid Verbal or Wake Up College Football, Dan Rubenstein is an Oregon alum and fan
September 25th, 2016 at 8:32 PM ^
Helfrich will get at least one more year. I think Oregon still should beat Oregon State and may have a chance to take down Washington at home (Huskies needed OT to take out a bad Arizona team and Autzen is about 50000% more hostile than the stadium in Tucson). If they win at least one of those he gets another.
