Eh. Moore was already the run game coordinator last year. And Harbaugh is obviously heavily involved. He made Gattis the OC, but it's always been a joint thing. I don't think that's why the offense has largely been average in his time here. I feel good about Weiss as OC. I believe someone here talked about Hart saying Weiss was very involved in the gameplans last year. And he's an analytics guy, which I like.

I've said it a few times, but I suspect part of Gattis' frustration is how many 'cooks were in the kitchen'. Harbaugh probably always had a hand in it, but Weiss and Moore were also on the rise and were potentially eclipsing Gattis in Jim's eyes. The first year the offense looked fairly competent was also the first year Weiss and Moore were more heavily involved

This is exactly what I was thinking. The Broyles award never made much sense to me because it was well known that Moore, Weiss, and Harbaugh all had significant input into the offense. $1 says Michigan's offense improves next year under Weiss/Moore and Gattis takes a big step back at Miami.

I really don't understand all the hate for the reigning Broyles Award winner. We obviously don't know how much of the offense was driven by Gattis or the rest of the brain trust but what we had last year worked very, very well. Making changes always have the opportunity to go either way but it will be hard for us to improve because the offense was sooo good last year. We all would have been very happy with the offensive staff staying intact so why are we dumping on Gattis since he left?

Gattis is a highly regarded coordinator let's not just assume we are better off with him gone.

Probably because when he bore more responsibility for the offense it was mediocre and disjointed.  So he either just happened to figure it all out the second half of last year, or it was the influence of the others that had come in at that time.  If he did indeed figure it out, then what he realized was that his own preferred form of the offense was not working, and that he should model his offense largely on what Jim likes to do.  Seems very coincidental and is an odd way to justify awarding him as the best coordinator.

Also, he went out like a crybaby, and engaged in borderline tampering, reaching out to now-former-players telling them that he doesn't think a person should remain where they aren't appreciated.  What are the odds that he tries to tell them that Miami would appreciate them more?

None of us know how much Gattis was involved in the game plan or play calling. What we do know is that the offense was great last year and it is losing a key member of the staff. It is difficult to assume this offense will improve by losing a very highly regarded coordinator. Sure he seemed to have a pissy attitude but we have no idea why. Maybe it was justified, maybe it wasn't. I am looking at what we as fans know and that starts and ends with us losing a solid coordinator and recruiter. Things may work out well and I have faith that Jim will put good people in place. I am not going to dance on Gattis' grave when we have no idea what his influence on the offense was or what actually happened between him and the administration.

Michigan had RBs that ran rampant over most of the B1G and a great gameplan for OSU and Iowa. I'm not sure Michigan had a great offense last year (at least not over the whole year). There was a reason Cade got a cyan circle from Seth - and most of the "controversy" over that wasn't over whether Seth had a point, it was whether Cade deserved the blame for head-scratching playcalling or if Gattis did.

And certainly, some of the head-scratching goes back to Gattis' previous years at the helm where "speed in space" started to be used primarily as a wry joke by the BPONE afflicted.

He’s an above average OC. That flea flicker was a thing of beauty against Georgia and no one ever saw it coming, especially when he called it every game. Georgia was waiting for that from the 1st snap. I don’t know what to make of Gattis to be honest. Outside of last year I wanted him canned every game and after he pulled his parting unprofessional temper tantrum i hope he loses every game. I’d have wished him the best had he not have acted like one of my kids when they were 10.

I don’t think it is “hate” to find it surprising that he won.  Throughout his three years we could never tell for sure how much control he had over the offense.  Given that, how do you then give him the award for the best assistant in the country?

I was happy for him that he got it but was confused at the same time.

In Gattis' defense, the offense really started to click down the stretch in his first season. Did it look bad to start off with? Yes, and granted, once the level of competition went up against OSU and Alabama the regression sank in, but against ND, Maryland, MSU and Indiana, the proverbial lightbulb seemed like it had turned on.

I give Gattis a little bit more of a pass on how it performed against OSU and Alabama because OSU was a playoff team stockpiled with talent that almost made the title game, and Alabama would've also been a playoff team if Tua was not injured. The offensive gameplans in both of those games were good enough to either win (vs. Alabama) or remain competitive (vs. OSU), but Shea couldn't hit a throw more than ten yards downfield to save his life so what can you do?

Not a huge fan of firing people so quickly, so I was happy we kept him.

But holy hell, that offense should have been so good.

- DPJ, Collins, Black, Bell

- Young Haskins and Charbonnet

- McKean and Eubanks

- Runyan, Bredeson, Ruiz, Onwenu, Mayfield

Every one of those players are in / will be in the NFL.  Sure Shea wasn't great - but that offense should have been WAY better.

Agreed. This is the right move to make. Wasn't there reports from before the season saying Gattis was going to move on after this season no matter what?

This is the correct move, just not the big flashy name hires people want to talk about. Take a look at Clemson who hired internally for their positions, and I fully expect them to be back to a top team this coming year. If Bellamy moves to WR's, I "think" that means we don't add anyone else on the offense, Newsome as reports are saying is coming on as a position coach, that just leaves the DC hire which I'm hoping is Minter.
