Sharing Trolls Counts as Trolling: Sometimes desperately lazy outlets hire trolls, or trolls who are good at social media build enough of a following, that they become a headache for us, spreading hate or falsehoods. Because having them repeated on our site can directly harm us, if you're on the message board you should be aware that posting something from them could get you banned. They are:

  • SirYacht/Chat Sports/James Yoder - Fake news merchant who likes to make up plausible rumors or report non-sure things to get a false scoop.
  • Any local Spartan media when they talk about Michigan. Unless they're yelling "MAKE PLAYS!"
  • Pete Finebaum: FoxNews for SEC fans. Occasionally useful to them but the only times he's intersecting with us is when he's carrying Saban's water.
  • Rainer Sabin: Finebaum wannabe hired by the Freep to troll Michigan fans.
  • Steve Deace: Curiously well-funded white supremacist radio host who's got such a small Michigan following you can safely assume anyone posting positively about him is Deace and ban him again. Creates lots of burner accounts to promote himself. Recently booted by Maven for advocating lynching.
  • Barstool: People who took the freedom of young internet too seriously because really what they wanted to do the whole time was propagate bad ideas.

WHY DO YOU MODERATE...

  1. Anything? Freedom of speech doesn't imbue what you say with any quality, just like the freedom to invent a machine doesn't mean everyone has to buy it, or that every market has to let you display it. MGoBlog is a business, not a public institution; people come here for a high-quality ideas market about Michigan athletics. If you put out a bad apple, it gets tossed. If you do it constantly, you lose your stand.
     
  2. Politics. Don’t you get enough of this everywhere else?
     
  3. Unpopular ideas. Moderators are given the primary instruction: DO NOT CENSOR IDEAS. But some ideas are so tiresome and retread and badly argued that they’re not worth keeping around. If you’re getting a substantial amount of downvotes we’ll look to see if you’re posting an unpopular opinion that you can support. If you can’t support it politely and rationally, or if you don’t acknowledge the holes in your argument, it’s noise. Pro tip: if you're getting frustrated in a conversation, back off for a sec, find the BEST part of the argument of the other guy, acknowledge that's a good point, and try to pick it apart.
     
  4. Content from other sites. Clickbait is annoying. 247, WTKA always get the benefit of the doubt.
     
  5. The Drew Sharp Memorial Don’t Feed the Professional Trolls Rule. Pete Finebaum has taken the place of the late Sharp. Valenti is on there too. If someone's trolling Michigan fans, don't spread it.
     
  6. The ChatSports Rule. Given: a) The only person Yoder sources is Yoder, b) the only non-bot who follows Yoder is Yoder, and c) roughly 7.53 billion humans on Earth lucky enough to not be Yoder would be appalled if anyone thought they were Yoder, we can logically assume that anyone sharing a Yoder link must be Yoder, and we'll ban Yoder again. This also goes for that twitter account that makes up fake quotes and that one podcaster with ties to white supremacists who keeps trying to get his stuff posted here.
     
  7. Bewbs and general misogyny/objectifying of women. We have tens of thousands of female Michigan fans; don't make it suck for them.

Banned RandallFlaggGucci a few minutes ago, though---I've been suspicious for a long time that Flagg and Gucci were one and the same.

Body of work. 

Nearly all your recent posts were political in nature and many were what we consider as political and/or covid trolling. Your most recent post in the thread about Obama's brackets was absolutely NOT what got you banned, it was when I was taking a look at someone else's posts that once again I noticed you, so I did a deeper dive and pulled the plug.

Politics is unavoidable on the board because by their very nature, sports are deeply intertwined w/politics these days.  It's bound to be brought up alongside/within some MGoBoard discussions.  But when someone pushes the limits I deal with it accordingly.

If you hadn't blown up the thread where I mentioned the brackets - I would certainly enjoy delving into all the folks' posts about Trump and the so VERY many posters with serious history of political trolling that gets passed by and allowed (as in multiple threads today that are anti-right).

And what exactly do you mean by Covid trolling?  I typically try to share articles to back my stance so not sure what you're calling trolling unless I left out an /s for sarcasm?

I deleted a comment by "Blue Me" in the State of Michigan 20% Capacity thread; along with it a handful of other comments that followed automatically also dropped off. Most of those comments were an exchange between BM and "murderwolflives 2", who had been banned a couple days ago and opened a new account. 

It would normally otherwise go w/o saying, but the new MW2 account is also going to be scrutinized because of his previous banning, as is the case with all repeat and new accounts .

"Blue Me" gets a warning for trolling. You've been around long enough to know better than to inject trump into a thread and expect no fallout.

Will be likely locking up the thread soon.

And since you nuked a comment and mentioned me, can you please tell me what I said today would justify a banning or even deletion of my comments?  I didn't curse, personally attack, slander, or libel anyone yet you chose to single me out.  Please help me to understand.

At what point do you do something about posters like xtra who both misrepresent the science (including repeatedly after being shown he is wrong misrepresenting what the CDC says about masks and covid) as well as making ad hominem attacks on posters who point out his mis-statements.  I do not mind being attacked for my views, but I do have an issue where (in previous posts - see 3/9 Michigan plans for fall and number of times that xtra brought my family into it)   No one’s family should be fair game for other posters. He brings great value to the board on many other topics but if the board allows behaviors from a respected poster like xtra, it encourages them from everyone.

I am not even saying ban him.   I am just saying make it clear to him that his behavior is not acceptable and that he is on a short leash.

Would be happy to see an example of an ad hiominem I have made.  My comments back to people like xtra have always focused on things they have said, not on people’s families.   Also, my bigger concern is the continued misrepresentation of CDC advice in the middle of a pandemic.   I have no issues with differing opinions, just complete misrepresentation of what groups like the CDC say and unrelated personal attacks.

In other words, I am more than happy to have my record on covid compared straight up to Xtra’s.   I am quite confident, that my personal attacks are much more confined directly to the content of the posts I am responding to than many of xtra’s.   I am also quite confident that I do not misrepresent science on a regular basis.   If such review suggests my behavior is sanctionable/banworthy, xtra’s is more so.

I did some digging and found nothing to back this up, so it's coming down. He's been injured I've heard. He's not the pass-catcher I heard was thinking of transferring and the original rivals message board didn't say which guy it was.

Not sure if this is right place but a hockey game post is always stuck at the top when I load the site.  It's been like this since....this particular hockey game was played.  I hadn't seen anything about it elsewhere so I may be the only one.

I already looked at his posting history an hour or so ago. He's on my watch list and not banning him yet at this point, but his leash is short, being that he's only been on the board for a couple months.  

For now, let him reap his share of negvotes. 

BTW, I locked that thread just minutes ago. I knew it would require a lot of monitoring, and at this point it has run its course AND a few usual suspects have shown up and seem somewhat intent upon derailing it.  I'd rather everyone, myself included, instead enjoy an afternoon of basketball.
