Speaking of play-action, I suggest you watch this week's MMQB with Devin. The talk about how JJ's PSU injury has dramatically limited him pushing off his back foot (kinda important for under-center play action).
The confusing thing about considering Paige's merits is that he's so perfectly boring,(in the best way!!!). I believe that Dax might be better but find it difficult to compare Dax's fantastic play and Paige's magnificently steady hand at the D's backend.
Thank you. I had considered this and decided against it but your argument persuaded me. I was too concentrated on their total impact over time rather than the impact of a luminous firestarter who began this era.
Appreciate your engagement.
I believe your argument could apply, to a lesser extent, to Hassan. His impact in the locker and weight rooms seems to have been a huge part of this turnaround as well. Wouldn't put him on the MR but if there's a "brought us through dark times" wing of this fictitious structure, then his bust would deserve to be across the entryway from AH.
Must've missed the over time bit - as in multiple years of impact during the selected range. He's obviously the best player that was on any one of those teams.
Heard the guys talk about their Mount Rushmore on the pod. Kinda disagreed with their takes. Aidan was AMAZING but was only a part of the 2021 team. I think you need relevance/impact over more time. My 2021-2023 UM rushmore is:
JJ
Blake
Mikey
Barrett
HM: Zinter/Keegan (wouldn't be mad if either was included but felt it hard to differentiate - also feels a bit dirty to not have a lineman on this but oh well)
Yes, throwing the ball would lead to a much higher probability of TO events, and TO events were likely the only way for PSU to win. The reason why there was this delta in TO event probability is 52's difficulty in dealing with a speed pash rush. Once UM had a lead, it was a prudent move to reduce performance volatility.
Less concerned about OSU's pass rush, as it seems they are more power and less speed rushers, which 52 seems more apt to handle appropriately. Also, I am more doubtful that UM can "sit" on a lead in the same way against OSU as they have a more well-rounded offense.
"Seems"? If defenses get hurt because of this play, in some significant fashion, then it's worth talking about. If not, then this is just camouflage for people/institutions who don't want this to happen for X Y Z reasons (e.g. they play the Eagles, they don't like contact football, etc).
This might look foolish in a few months but I think OSU's offense will take a step back this season (note - take a step back from #1). They have so much talent but I'm a bit skeptical about how their qb play will be, especially early in the season behind new tackles. I'm not dumb enough to doubt that OSU will have a high-functioning offense by November, but not the best in the nation.
Seth, could you please write where the player that you're referencing too is lined up more often. You do it sometimes but it's often difficult to tell on first, and sometimes second, watch what linebacker or tackle I should be focusing on.
Regarding the JJ running out of bounds stuff, I disagree with Brian's assessment of the first instance and agree with the second.
I disagree with the sentiment that the first instance was a mistake/bad play (when he went around a block to get out of bounds after getting the first down). I think that's a reasonable decision to make given the circumstance. He moved the chains and is protecting himself. From watching the play, he lost maybe 4-5 probable bonus yards if he had cut it up. I would sacrifice those bonus yards for a lack of possible injury (given that he safely secured a first down).
The second was different (two-minute drill). It seems as though he's sprinting across the field toward the sideline instead of trying to get yards/make a play. Brian used the term "unnatural" and I agree with that.
Though there is a caveat! Iowa. I would imagine that he would be more aggressive in a situation where the opponent had a more prolific offense and or the game was more in doubt on the scoreboard. But that's an assumption.
Meanwhile, the speed option was stinky. No defense there. Execute a true option or don't run an option play.
And it should be an interference call. A poignant difference between this situation and the underthrown ball on the outside that gets a trail technique CB to "interfere" is the DB's positioning. Here, the DB can see the ball - in the other case, they cannot. One is someone arriving early and the other is a bamboozling.
Just the combine - thought is that an org (OKC) made assurances to him that if he withdrew, then they would draft him with a fairly high pick (late first). The idea being, that org doesn't want others to see him workout.
Not commenting on the merits of the above statement, that's just the watercooler talk.
R.e your second point, I completely agree! That is something that can be developed via further skills and physical training. Yet, some people here (even some who write for this site) have written him off as a disappointment and bust.
I just hate to see the blog that covers the sport/teams that I love act like jerks to players who I believe in.
As I stated above (after your post so no worries), the tone got a bit beyond where I wanted it to be in retrospect.
Tbh I just have some lingering resentments about how people have talked about Caleb, which seem to sprout from a number of things. One of those things seems to spring from a marriage to the 1-5 understanding of basketball. I have chosen not to engage with the others in this post.
Thank you for saying I started great, that means I did something well at least.
Thanks. After reading your initial response, I wish I could edit my post/had taken a different tone.
While I stand behind much of what I wrote, some of the tone was not appropriate and many people who are active members of this community took stray collateral damage that was not intended.
I respect this community and just wanted to raise the level of conversation about something we all care about.

i suspect the ulnar nerve injury restricted pass-catching ability, which kills any modern age skill guy
Retire!? They should either die on the sidelines or leave when we decide that they're past their prime. Because this is MICHIGAN, FERGODSAKES.
Explains the lack of play action. Need of platform throws so he doesn't hurt his legs

I hope this is sarcastic

Definitely worth a discussion though!
Appreciate the Moody love but I also agree with having Mikey over him.
Side note: what a blessing to have a discussion like this. Long live Harbaugh!

Also, JJ isn't a captain on this year's team

not 12-0 in 2021 but fuck it! WE BALL!!!

Already pre-ordered one
EWWWWWWWWWW... but funny. I laughed

I'd be concerned if the defense gets hurt by the play, as they are the recipients of the offense's decision

You don't want personnel to tip play calls.
Anyone know when the preseason biases are taken out of the SP+ model? Thanks!
gimme that
7-9 wins this year. I am, and have been, a believer.

So we KNOW that this was a credits transfer issue or is this speculation?
Congratulations to the young man!
Gonna say it again. Prime is going to succeed. 6+ wins this season. P12 contenders the next.
Same here
Hope you keep this same energy when they outperform your expectations
I will go rogue and attack East Lansing until it is ours - orders be damned
I'd put my money on Deion being very successful.
Watching his doubters stfu is going to be so fun to watch.
How does he know that he has penis breath?
I've been paying more attention to Deion these last few years and have been overwhelming impressed with him on and off the field.
Colorado just became a program that will expect to win 9 games every season and will likely be league champs after the LA schools leave.
"You injure your heisman candidate"?
Putting that on the coaches is a bit of a stretch
You have to throw the ball with velocity with this much wind
The WRs have to catch the ball
Seth, great writeup! Also, thanks for taking the extra time to put who you're talking about above the video clips. Really helpful!
Triple Option isn't a bad idea...
I feel like the "No Barstool" rule needs to soften a bit. This podcast is content that is of legitimate interest to many UM fans.
Do not punish the son for the sins of the father.

This bothered me a lot - i get that he might have trouble pronouncing it but i know he can type it
Surprised they didn't auction the naming rights off to some egotistical alum with too much money
I think any conclusory statements about upcoming players are premature at this juncture.
I'll bet you a nickle on the first statemnt.
As for the second, I think the entire front seven (minus Mazi and some Colson) is still a TBD.
