OT - New Red Wings Head Coach Derek Lalonde Joins the Spittin' Chiclets Podcast

Submitted by smotheringD on October 11th, 2022 at 10:55 PM

This is a good interview if you'd like to get to know Derek Lalonde a little better before this weekend when the Wings start the season.  A little long (60 min) so you might want to break it up or listen while cleaning the garage.  He talks about working his way up the coaching ranks, DIII Assistant Coach, to winning the Cup as an Assistant Coach.  Probably the funniest story was when he dressed up for Halloween as Uncle Fester, went to a bar, and won the award for best costume.  (Mostly pretty clean but depending on what part of the podcast you're listening to, one of the guys is pretty loose with the F-bombs...)

The interview starts here:

If you want to hear their take on the Red Wings' new season, it starts 5 minutes earlier here:

I feel like the "No Barstool" rule needs to soften a bit. This podcast is content that is of legitimate interest to many UM fans.

If you're following hockey at all, you'd know that the sport is struggling with toxic masculinity issues between what's going on inside Hockey Canada, inside the Blackhawks organization, and even here with the Mel situation..

Barst**l built its entire brand off of that same frat-boy culture, and while S'C may not be as guilty as some of other BS personalities, they do lean-into that aspect of hockey culture more than I'm personally comfortable with.

Sure, the guests they pull are big names and they get wild stories, but I would vehemently disagree that they are "one of the absolute best things in hockey today" on principle alone.

A rule that hasn't been enforced consistently is not really a rule at all. And the fact that this post has been left up for a half day without being locked, let alone deleted, indicates that the no Barstool rule is a dead letter. Or at least, only applies to headline Barstool content (of the kind that is objectionable to the sensibilities of this blog). Which is a good development - this podcast was fine.

Hard disagree. Paul Bissonette (co-host on this podcast) was just on national TV claiming that half the reason women watch hockey is because the players are hot. Portnoy still sends his "stoolies" after any person with enough courage to speak out against them. It makes sense that a dirtbag like Lewan (who may or may not have threatened a victim of sexual assault) would align with those types of guys.

I listened to and enjoyed this interview, but I don't think it should be posted without huge caveats about who the content is coming from. And if the leaders of MGoBlog want to delete every single thread that contains a barstool link for any reason, then they are well within their rights to do it.

Great listen on my walk yesterday. I'm really hoping for Derek to bring good things to this team. I'm heading to the home opener in a couple nights. My Yzerman jersey has been hanging in my closet for too many months.

Yes.  The Eastern Conference is tough.  Like Lalonde said on the podcast, it took 100 points to make the playoffs last year and the Wings had 74.  So the challenge is getting quite a few more wins against teams that are already really good.

But the Wings roster is now pretty solid, top to bottom.  If you watched them in recent years you could see they were overmatched, just not enough talent to compete.  That will not be the case this year.  Stevie added a half dozen very good veteran players and a coach that was instrumental in Tampa winning two Cups.  You add to that the amount of young talent we have in the pipeline from drafting well the past several years and I believe the Wings will make the playoffs this year.

With Raymond having a year under his belt, Vrana and Sundqvist healthy, Bertuzzi able to travel across the border, the additions of Kubalik, Copp, Perron, and the big kid Elmer I think their offense will be consistently able to produce night in and night out. Zadina should be feeling the pressure with some young guys ready to make the roster and produce if he can't. He looks hungry. Rasmussen should be ready to take the next step as well. They have three solid lines and a fourth with potential.

Man what I'm really hoping is for their defense and goaltending to take a step forward this year. They've struggled on the back end for years. I think Husso and Ned can be good enough to get them to the playoffs, but it all comes down to their defensive corps. Improved forward play will help and the additions of Maata and Chariot should add some veteran play that should be better than the bums they've been signing for the last five years. LGRW

Even with Edvinsson not making the team this year, it doesn't mean he can't be that guy. Makar didn't start playing in the NHL until his draft +3 year (Same a Seider, both of which won the Calder). Simon is just entering his draft +2 year and has a good chance to be the first D-man getting a call up from GR this season. There's a chance we already have one or two of those lying around!

Could very well be!  Maybe 53 + 77 = 8.

Or in a few years, 53 + 77 > 8

Checked out the Griffins roster to see what number Simon went with.  77, same as Paul Coffey.  The Griffins' roster is stacked.  They've got to be the favorite to win the other Calder.

(edit: had the wrong number in there for Mo.  Elmer is another up and comer with lots of potential)
