As an old band guy, the stadium tunnel is a very important place. Many times you knew M was going to win by looking in the eyes of the opposing team as they walked up that tunnel. Other times, not so much, and then you knew it was going to be a slugfest.

I consider it a privilege to have been there before each home game for five years (slow student).

Lloyd loves M deeply. I don't care either way about the naming of the tunnel. My highest aspiration has always been a plaque with my name above a urinal in a basement somewhere...

To me, this is great and well-deserved news. I prefer to keep my anonymity, but I was fortunate enough to work for the football team in a support/non-player capacity during the mid-to-late 90's. Based on my firsthand experience, I cannot stress enough how incredible of a leader and human being Coach Carr was to members of the program, including myself. I understand to the outside world Coach Carr often presented as someone with "rough edges." I very much acknowledge the criticisms of Coach Carr in connection with Coach Rodriguez's tenure. Even assuming all of those criticisms are warranted, it does not change my opinion one bit.

Coach Carr was a true mentor that ALWAYS emphasized off-the-field success as much as on-the-field success. At the end of practice, a common occurrence was to bring the team together and break the last huddle with the words, "GRADUATE!"

Congratulations Coach! The next time I walk/run down the tunnel, it will be in your honor.

Incredible national championship. Great person. Great representative of the university. Great mentor. Good recruiter. Average X’s & O’s coach. Bad post-retirement supporter. Worth a tunnel.

I have a question for this austere forum.

Do you know where Michigan plays on November 26th this year?

Yes, I know the game is in Columbus.  When I grew up, it was known as either Ohio Stadium - or, The Shoe.

Recently, I saw a bit of a Bucks game - and I think it may be in the process of being renamed.

They already have “Value City” Arena, and it looks like the football team plays on “Safelite Field” - as in .. “Safelite Repair, Safelite Replace.”

I love how the Bucks will sell out to anybody.

And, I certainly hope and pray that Michigan never stoops to this.  Michigan Stadium and the Crisler Center / Arena - have tradition and history - which I hope all future generations can appreciate.

Would’ve rather named it for Chad Carr than Lloyd. Always felt like Lloyd has been secretly hoping Harbaugh would fail. Hasn’t really been overly supportive of any coach since he left. Was he a vocal supporter of Hoke? I can’t recall.

For the record you irritated me with a stupid ass take about Carr not supporting Harbaugh?

The man is 77 years old, he literally gave Michigan all that he has to give (except 2008 - 2010 but whatever). What did you want him to do, come out and serenade Harbaugh with a song.

I'm pretty sure Lloyd stays out of the spotlight so jackasses like us don't waste our time discussing how loyal he is to Michigan...

Yet here we are.

Dude.. sorry I hurt your feelings. And I don’t really care if I irritated you. You lurk on this board to pounce on someone that might have an opinion contrary to yours then you go all nuclear with your outrage. Wasn’t looking for an argument, just giving my opinion and you know what they say about opinions and what they have in common with?? Yeah, I just insulted myself…Anyway, yay for the Lloyd Carr tunnel. Is that better for you bud?

Why do you think that?  Maybe because he called Harbaugh out for throwing us under bus when at Stanford? About the lack of academic rigor here. Harbaugh was so pissed that Lloyd hired Loeffler as QB coach instead of him, so much he tried to coach MSU...

Lloyd was right to do that. And Harbaugh admitted he was wrong to say those things.

Can we name some things after players. This is nothing against coaches but they get their laurels while they coach, they're compensated for it. Make ohio walk through the Charles Woodson tunnel every other year

I'm fine with this.

Lloyd fell in love with Michigan long before he was the head coach.  In 1988, Wisconsin offered him the head coaching job (long before they even considered Barry Alvarez) and he turned the job down because he was so happy in Ann Arbor.  Being the defensive coordinator at Michigan was more important to him than being head coach elsewhere.

When Lloyd became interim head coach, he couldn't bring himself to park in Moeller's parking spot all season out of loyalty to his friend.  And several games into the 1995 season, half the team threatened to quit if the interim label wasn't removed and he wasn't officially named head coach.

One moment I fondly remember was a press conference before the 1998 Penn State game.  A reporter asked Lloyd if he would give a Knute Rockne type speech to the team before the game.  He replied, "I'll give a Fielding Yost type speech and a Bo Schembechler type speech but never, NEVER a Knute Rockne type speech."

For 27 years he was a part of the football program.  His players loved and respected him.  And most importantly, he loved Michigan. This is well deserved.

@M squared - say what you want about Lloyd but don’t criticize him for use of university funds. He was notably paid less then almost all other coaches in the big (despite often winning big championships) and he regularly made large contributions to mott hospital (before his grandson fell ill). Again, critique away re RR but he most certainly did not waste university funds while he was here for his own gain. Much more the opposite.

I find it kinda odd they’re naming the tunnel after him as opposed to something else like a hall or something. I will also say the hate between RRod and Carr in that era is 50/50 based off responses in this thread.  A lot are looking in hindsight. At the time and years after RRod did not have any support. Couldn’t bring in his D Coordinator and as many noted the cupboard was bare. You give him 1 more year (and not a 3 year BS leash)  and he was running a true spread offense with D Rob with Gardner coming in. So while we found out much later RRod was a pos person, he brought UM to an updated offense and Shoelace.  I would direct that animosity towards Bill Martin more than anything. Shit AD. Carr, I believe, gave his support and opinions on what the players should do as he looked out for the team and Michigan. I believe  Carr was the scapegoat for the RRod hate and think there were more culprits than just him not giving the support RRod deserved at the time. Carr deserves to be honored regardless and RRod deserves more time/support but wasn’t a “Michigan Man”

RRod was fired because he sucked at coaching in the BiG10 and any form of physicality that Michigan football had was thoroughly transferred over to East Lansing for the coming 7 years. ….not because “he couldn’t get his pieces” or his “desired coordinator”. He certainly had enough talent to surpass 3 wins in 2008, he just force fed his system with Steven Threet at QB and a bunch of power running backs (I would have loved to have seen Brandon Minor play under Harbaugh). He hasn’t had any real success since West Virginia. That was when his offense was “new and exciting”, now his offense has been passed up by better models that still incorporate a power running game which he was incapable of doing. Hell, the game has mostly passed up Chip Kelly as well, so no shame to RRod, but it’s true what they warned us of; his offense was a gimmick for a handful of years until defenses figured him out, not a rock solid system to build your program around.

I even remember message board lectures about the genius of RRod’s 3-3-5 defense if he only had his way with it! Both here and on Sackcarr.com (Hailvictors.com)

I remember all the hype over a graveled voiced man named Barwis and how the “Barwis Effect” was going to make Michigan the most lean and mean team in the land. They were lean alright, but got absolutely mauled by anyone with a pulsating offensive line and aggressive defense.

I supported the man hard when he was a coach. I fought for him, and said, GIVE HIM TIME! on the message boards. I even believed we were “BACK!” after 2 fun but deceiving victories over Notre Dame in successive Septembers, but it was all a sham and a smokescreen. When you neglect defense completely and take away most of the physical aspect of a running game, you get your ass kicked in the BiG10. The years following his firing showed how much he depleted UM football.

Only positive I can say to RRod is thanks for finding Denard.

They ran a pass play at 9:45 of the 3rd quarter, which was caught and fumbled, which led to Michigan getting a short field and scoring to make it 24-14.

And then Wisconsin literally never passed again the rest of the game.

If you want to torture yourself on a Friday, the Defensive UFR from that game. Just the same plays over and over again: I-Form Inside Zone, I-Form Power Off Tackle, I-Form Iso, I-Form......
