In winning a (partial) NC, Lloyd did a lot to uphold the tradition and prestige of Michigan football. And he was clairvoyant on RR. But wins or losses aside, his greatest contribution was his insistence on honesty and high moral direction for the program. For that I have no issue in naming a tunnel after him. Of course, this is likely to start a few tunnel vision jokes. So be it.

Cool story bro: I met Lloyd Carr once at a fundraiser at a bowling alley in Saline.  I introduced myself as an alum, was glad to meet him etc. Then asked him a question about recruiting and what he looked for in a recruit... and..... I honestly have no recollection of what he said.  Something about being a good athlete? I dunno.  Much to my dismay, he didn't mention anything about starz.

Yeah Coach Mo left the team loaded, any coach could have followed him. When you saw you those 93 and 94 teams lose 4 games you knew the world was there for the taking. Lloyd proved how terrible he was by losing 4 games in both 95 and 96! Coach Mo would never have done that. Thankfully Mo and his former DC had that team stacked heading into 1997!

And don't get me started on DeBord and his dinoball. This fool used a defensive player on offense, what a knuckle dragger! Then he tried ruining the 2006 season by wasting so much time in the Spring with the Antonio Bass package. Like any of that would ever lead to a 60pt win vs Delaware State.

He did more harm on his way out and after than he should have for such a “beloved” coach. He was a good coach but Charles Woodson probably had more to do with that title than him. I don’t mean to be dismissive of him, I really don’t. I liked the guy, I just think our fan base overrates him

I an not a fan of Lloyd.  I appreciate that he was coach in 97 and had a decent record against Cooper led OSU teams.  Outside of that?  Boring football that held Michigan back and he seems to be a bit petty.  I get it, so am I.

Part of me has gotten over the way that Carr treated Rich Rod when he got here

Part of me Loves Lloyd for the way he stayed devoted to Michigan

So whatever. I'm changing my name to the Gary Moeller official Darker Blue name for greatness*

I know what you mean but these are a few posters and I don't think majority feels that way. They are naming a very important and sentimental tunnel after his grandfather. So, if he didn't commit because of a few comments as opposed to how much the university values his grandfather, I don't think the kid got it right. It sounds like it is for other reasons though.

Yeah, I don't understand the Lloyd hate. He has two major blemishes on his record - App State and he couldn't beat Tressel. But he won a lot of games, had Michigan in B1G contention every year, won multiple B1G titles, went to several Rose Bowls, signed great recruiting classes and won a national title.

RichRod failed here because he was a sleazy guy and a bad coach for a big program. Lloyd's support/non-support had little impact on that.

Carr deserves to be honored.

Well so was Bo and virtually every other post-war coach we’ve had save for Fritz Crisler. That says nothing about him and more about the continuity in philosophy in culture within the program. Bo was worse, perpetually blowing shots at national titles and falling short in Rose Bowls and in the biggest moments. His teams were rarely clutch. Does that make Bo a bad coach? No, but he was not an elite coach as many Michigan faithful believe. He was good and consistent, which is pretty good in the grand scheme of things. In fact, Lloyd matched or surpassed him in every way save for one: longevity. As an aside, the the cream-of-the crop that the program developed under Carr outshined any of Bo’s players in terms of historical significance in the NFL.

The Lloyd hate RR love is totally inappropriate.  I didn’t read the Bacon book but car was a great position coach for years and years and won us a National Championship.  Mallet Schmallet.  RR was a scumbag who left his alma mater for a paycheck. He failed on his own.  What an awful fan base we have.  Booing Cade, trashing Carr….  Disgusting.

“RichRod failed here because he was a sleazy guy”.

This is revisionism - I have no idea what RR did or did not do at Michigan, or if he exhibited any of what caught up to him in AZ, but he pretty clearly got canned because he didn’t win enough football games, not because UM was some sort of paragon of virtue.

Jesus Christ, people are still bitching about Rich Rod?

He sucked.  He lost because was a bad coach, not because Lloyd Carr was mean to him.  Get over it.
