Not to piss on this posbang (unless you're into that kinda thing, in which case, you're welcome), but I already have no classes Tuesday. Why couldn't this be on a Wednesday? Thanks Obama.
That said, I do agree with the decision. It's colder than a well-digger's ass out there.
January 27th, 2014 at 7:49 PM ^
I've never considered the relative temperature of a well diggers' ass. Witches tit's, sure, but never that. The more you know.
January 27th, 2014 at 7:57 PM ^
The real saying is "darker than a well-diggers ass" which makes complete sense
January 27th, 2014 at 8:06 PM ^
The "real" saying? I wasn't aware that the board had made a ruling yet.

Oh well, enjoy it Wolverines!

different week. Stupid polar vortex. It happened Jan 6-8. My kids had 3 days off school due to snow (Jan 6) and cold (Jan 7,8) on the first days they were supposed to be back at school. Longest winter break ever.

Traveled to the greater Marquette-Negaunee-Ishpeming metroplex last week and was impressed by the January snowscape. I know that the Keweenaw Peninsula and Munising to Grand Marais have been getting absolutely slammed this year. I miss U.P. winters. Stay warm, my friend.
January 27th, 2014 at 7:59 PM ^
There was an article today about snow amounts. A2 is almost up to the entire winter average snowfall and so are several other cities. But the UP is down from usual. Here is the article:
http://www.mlive.com/weather/index.ssf/2014/01/michigan_snowfall_so_far…
Even though it is down, it's still a lot of snow!
January 27th, 2014 at 10:42 PM ^
Lake effect snow is so fickle. Marquette's totals might be down, but don't tell that to our friends in Houghton and the Keweenaw Peninsula. They got lambasted early in the year by nonstop lake effect snow. I think they're well above normal. But it's also nice to see the Lower Peninsula getting a legit winter...enjoy the white stuff (but drive safely).

My brother is actually the dude who runs the conference call of all the superintendents.
The call started back in 1995 when my dad would drive me to school really early (he went to work at 5:30 and I chose to go to Groves instead of Seaholm so I couldn't take the bus, ergo 5:30). On an iffy day he called the B'ham superintendent to ask if he should take me or not, and John was like "let me walk my dog and see."
Since my dad's business (agricultural consultants) contracts with highly accurate meteorologists--way better than the ones on the news--he offered to put the superintendent on the phone with the meteorologist and get a more accurate account than what it's like at 5:30 a.m. when you walk your dog in Birmingham.
After that was a success he bragged to other superintendents and they joined the call one after another. When my last sibling went to college my dad handed the call off to his youner partner. When his kids went off to college my brother, who works with them, took over the call. They have about 20 districts in metro detroit who get on my brother's call and can ask questions to the meteorologist. Then each superintendent makes their own call.

I think you meant to say "I got into Seaholm, and chose to go to Groves."
I kid. I only went to Seaholm for senior year, spent the first 3 on the east side of the D. So I have no idea if that is an actual rivalry.
January 28th, 2014 at 4:49 PM ^
Ha. Actually I didn't make the football team at Groves and was sour about that, while my brother played for Seaholm and was good enough to earn a little D-I interest and some D-II offers, so I betrayed my school and went to all the Mapes. They still the kickoff cheer in the stands that I helped start.

In fact, the front page of the Daily the next day featured a multi-picture time sequence of some kid wiping out as the lead story!

I remember that day. My still-shower-wet hair froze on the way to class, which was a half-R.C. class, so I'm walking in trying to thaw out my brain while these sleepy hippies in pajamas are wandering in asking if it's cold out.

One day during January of my Freshman year, Ann Arbor set the record for "coldest low in January"
January 19, 1994.
Ann Arbor low temperature for the day? -25.1 degrees
"On that fateful, bitter day, the temperature reached a low of -22 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service. It was the coldest day in the history of the University.
The wind chill factor that day reached epic proportions, driving the temperature down to a 2 a.m. low of -61 degrees."

When I was at Case in the early 90s we had a huge snowstorm on a Monday. Not very unusual as Cleveland is in the lake effect snow belt. What was great was that someone hacked into the TV and radio stations systems and declared a snow day. So as we were all listening to the radio in the morning hearing all the school districts that were cancelled, we heard our college cancelled! It was awesome! So even though the school didn't declare it, no one showed up for classes or work.
My kids now have their 5th snow day and will likely have one on Wednesday. They can't even run around outside in the snow because it is so cold.
I was in MN this am with -40 windchill and it was so cold - I have never felt anything like it. But, it was so nice, I get it twice now that I am back in MI.
Stay warm folks!

Mad props to another UW-Madison lackey! My morning class was caught in the cancellation crossfire, too. I'm mostly prepped for tomorrow, so I guess Thursday's class is largely ready and I can cross other things off of my to do list. Get yo'self a hot Mickey's Dairy Bar breakfast tomorrow in lieu of teaching.

Keep fighting the good fight against Bo Ryan. It actually makes some sense though since at least here in Chicago it looks to be getting warmer as the day does on. If you can call -11 warm that is.
I feel bad for Minnesotans though. They've dealth with this weather all winter not just a couple of days here and there. Can't wait for winter to be going instead of coming.
