It absolutely was. By the time we get to the one I mentioned in the post Alabama had been flagged seven times and Michigan six. Things didn't get better in the second half, either. IIRC (still editing) I have a small section on it in part 3 as well.

Thanks, I appreciate that and all the kind comments here. His siblings were great to speak with. I'm very fortunate to get the time I need to put into these pieces.

Those SI pieces made me want to get into sportswriting and I'm working on some things that are fairly similar. Hoping to have some quality longform pieces for you guys this season. Quite a few pots on the stove right now. Just waiting to see which boils first.

That’s a great point. For some reason I was thinking of him as more of a viper but I just re-read my FBD and yep, rover is a good it (and I’ll edit the post when I’m not on mobile).

I appreciate the feedback. I tinkered with the format last week  because lately I’ve been thinking these might not be as reader-friendly as they could be.

Last week I grouped things by category so if someone wants to see something—say a linebacker’s sideline-to-sideline speed—they can easily move the film around to those plays. I’m open to writing them up chronologically as well (I think I did that in the Dayton Hill FBD, not sure).

Feel free to leave additional thoughts here or tweet/DM me.

Thanks, you stated that more…

Thanks, you stated that more clearly than I did. It's what I was trying to get at with the bit about how you can finish inside the top 16 and not make the tournament because of the auto-bid bump.

The CHN matrix is really interesting. What I was trying to figure out yesterday was, had they defeated Notre Dame, whether they could have played themselves into a position where sweeping the regular season plus winning the first two rounds of the conference tournament would get them high enough in Pairwise that they might get in if every other conference title was won by the team that would already get in (plus the Atlantic) and now that I'm typing that out in a single sentence, uh, yeah, conference tourney title.

I think Smith and Hinton…

I think Smith and Hinton will both be in the rotation this year. I've done a couple Smith FBOs and he made a leap his senior season, then got better in the post-season UA all-star practices. Hinton impressed the recruiting types in post-season all-star practices but I haven't been able to track down a full game of his yet. I'm going to keep digging because I'd really, really like to do a Future Blue Derivatives on him.

Yep, the upcoming cycle is the class of 2020. Clarkston's two linemen are in the class 2021, so they'll be playing their junior seasons this fall

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback (and link, which is a good reminder to embed those at the end next time). Agree with your thoughts on Hughes. He's such a good skater and creator that I'd love to see him at forward, even if it's just a one-game experiment.

True, true. But I went with "commence" because I felt that they had to restart after a week off the tour, that this was something akin to a stop at IHOP on a long road trip: you'll think "this year it's different, I'll try somewhere else" and then you'll end up there anyway.

I wondered the same thing…

I wondered the same thing and came to the same conclusion. Sam said in a thread on their board that Bailey's mobility is more in line with Rudock's than the guys on the roster now. Obviously you can win that way and some on this staff have, but yeah, interesting timing.

Thanks for reading. Your comment made me think of a video of Quinn and Jack Hughes I came across while writing this piece. USA Hockey put a Go Pro on them during the World Junior Showcase and the result was pretty cool.

I’m sure he could handle it…

I’m sure he could handle it from a technical standpoint, just depends how much weight he can add without slowing too much. I believe he’s around 230 right now. Seems like he’d need to add 40-50 pounds to play 3T.

Embarrassed, but I guess if you’re going to make a mistake make it a #nice one.

I imagine they will take…

I imagine they will take weight off and partially rebuild but I thought he got off the ball and did fine the couple times he went to the second level for his size. Not fleet of foot, but I thought he would be slower than he is given the listed weight.

EDIT: I've been thinking about it and I do think 50 pounds is overstating it. I got that from comparing him to other linemen on his line, and while they may be that much lighter, it's not a strict apples-to-apples comparison since they're not all projected to play at the same level in the future.

Yeah, been doing pressers…

Yeah, been doing pressers since 2014. I'm not anymore, but I'll be back September 1st. I'll be doing some new things as well as the profiles I've been doing the last couple years.

This came up on MGoSlack. We combed through the record book (just the past few seasons) and found a 24-goal weekend against OSU in January 2016. I went back and looked and I split that into two posts, so this would technically be the longest.

I was thinking the same thing for a while. Felt a whole lotta relief when I found that Friday's highlight package had all but one goal.

Good call. It's there now.

That's my fault too. I thought a sweep might pull them up the rankings enough that they wouldn't have an impact on M.

Bell's and Founders are great and all that but Right Brain might be my favorite MI brewery. Mangalista Pig Porter is unlike any other beer I've ever tried.

Thanks, I appreciate it. There's one more: the excellent Jeremy Dewar, author of The Entry Level Contract, points out that you should replace "Lewandowski" with "Hirose" when you read through State's first goal. I'd make these changes but got an error when I tried and if I try the other editing platform it'll break the GIFs.

I think he's making a generalization. Chase has always picked his words very, very carefully. It would be very out of character for him to casually bash part of the staff while praising others.

Really appreciate that.

Thank you! But wait, are you trying to tell me something about presser transcripts?

Yeah, stick to music, Louis.

Yeah, stick to music, Louis. (Actually this is probably the worst "After THE JUMP:" I've ever left in and published and I'm sorry, I have failed you all. I wrote it in the middle of the night, though, so there's that.)

No problem. I appreciate the

No problem. I appreciate the conversation. I know there haven't been as many schematic questions as people might like but that's in response to a number of things, including how I read the room and who we're talking to. Just trying to pick my spots.

And as for the question about what they're seeing on film, I like to see where a coach goes with that. Do they talk about a particular player? Do they list a position group or two that caught their attention? Is it just platitudes? It doesn't always work, but it can give a bit of insight into what's on their mind in the middle of game prep. That said, I've tried it a few times now and at this point I feel like it's time to go back to the drawing board (or, in this case, my google doc with question ideas).

I like your second question

I like your second question and think it might get an answer framing it that way, as a question about the long-term direction the run game. That's a good question for the spring, too.

The thing about the first question is I really do understand why you want that asked and answered, but trust me, the coaching staff views that as giving away an unnecessary advantage to the opponent. Harbaugh's response to questions like those is always along the lines of "we like the opponent to think everything is on the table."

I didn't ask about going away

I didn't ask about going away from zone to more gap blocked runs because we know the answer: they stopped calling the stuff that wasn't working and went with what was.
