Michigan Now #1 in FPI/Rankings Open Thread

If we have a 50% chance of beating OSU, how do we project to winning 11.8 games? Does that include the postseason?
October 9th, 2016 at 12:26 PM ^
Projected W-L: Projected overall W-L, accounting for results to date and FPI-based projections for remaining scheduled games (including potential conference championship games). May not sum to a whole number because of differing number of games played in each simulation.

help when selections are made for the CFP.

I think both Massey and Sagarin will update sometime in the AM on Monday, so I will be very intrigued to see how far the 32% from Massy for the OSU game moves, among other things. One of the things about these is that I think there is some weight given to previous seasons, so they might look a little conservative right now, and as it stands, they are projecting almost smooth sailing from here on out.

Massey & Sagarin have already updated for Saturday's games. I doubt the 2 games today will change anything for Michigan.

Love it. Also, Michigan is leading the nation in total defense, scoring defense, passing defense, TFLs, and yards per play allowed. The country going to hop on the harbaugh train or what?

way to go according to Herbstreit. He didn't use to such a homer.

Yes he has. He's a thinly veiled OSU gas-bag. Spielman, too.

This team is much better prepared to handle Ohio State's offense than the 2006 team was. 2006 was a great defense but they were caught flatfooted against Ohio State and did a lot of "Oh shit!" chasing in The game.

2016 - we are the real deal led by a GREAT HC (Harbaugh) and top notch assistants

We don't like it, but Ohio State's 2014 NC proved that they can go toe to toe with Alabama. And they have not fallen off at all.
If we can beat Ohio State, you can be confident that we can go toe to toe with Alabama.

This team is much better than the 2006 team.

Washington's nonconference schedule was terrible, but I have a hard time seeing them get left out if they go undefeated. I think the Big 12 champion is the only one that is in danger of missing the playoff even with an undefeated team.

Washington's final 5 games are still a little tricky and a step up from the teams they have played to date.
October 9th, 2016 at 12:49 PM ^
won't go undefeated, the Pac12 is a crapshoot. Washington needed OT to beat Arizona, it will probably sort itself out but Oregon and Stanford are really not very good.U
one of Utah, USC or WSU will get them.

I saw that and my first thought was Herbie is out of his mind.
October 9th, 2016 at 1:08 PM ^
in the group think mode of Stanford and Oregon are good, Washington crushed them, ergo Washington must be GREAT.
Stanford and Oregon are mediocre at best, Stanford will struggle to win 7, while Oregon will struggle just to get bowl eligible.

Herbie is an ass. He is totally biased towards OSU and tries to hide it.

OSU at Wisconsin this Saturday. Night game and College Gameday is going to be there. I am interested to see how they match up against them.
October 9th, 2016 at 12:51 PM ^
the ball against OSU either. That game will look like our game with UW if we had executed in their half of the field. Bucks by 20+
October 9th, 2016 at 1:04 PM ^
No way. Sorry to disagree so vehemently but I think the game will be a one score difference throughout with last minute heroics by one team to win it. Wisconsin is at home, at night, and they have an excellent defense. This will be a very difficult game for OSU to win.
October 9th, 2016 at 1:12 PM ^
so, I'm just not that convinced UW is that great beyond their defensive front 7.
October 9th, 2016 at 1:15 PM ^
Not so sure about that. They couldn't even handle our part-time spread with a just-learning-it-now Peppers as QB.
Our offense *sigh* was a much better matchup for their defense than Ohio State's offense will be.

The strength of our offense is its versatility. In many ways this is an advantage, because we can morph into whatever scheme that the defense is vulnerable to. This is legitimately hard to do. As a result we can demolish teams like Hawaii and Rutgers, as well as teams that overplay one thing, like PSU and UCF.
But one reason why we do that is because we NEED to do that. Our run blocking is meh and our quarterback is meh, so if you have a defense that's sound in all phases of the game, as Wisconsin showed, we don't have a way to break it wide open. It's not an offense that can keep up with the machines they have at Alabama or OSU.
October 9th, 2016 at 12:52 PM ^
if we just execute against Wisconsin that games a 2 or 3 touchdown romp. Maybe Michigan in November does just that.
October 9th, 2016 at 12:54 PM ^
didn't do it.
Playing for the other teams weaknesses is what good coaches do. Perhaps you'd like us to play to their strengths to see how it works out. I'd prefer we do exactly what we're doing. There is a lot of the playbook I'm sure hasn't been seen yet and this team is getting better and better every day.
