Michigan basketball snowflake thread

I made the mistake of underestimating coach b for yet another season. The team is finally starting to find it on offense and Doyle is coming around nicely.

I think it was a deceivingly good win (despite how ugly it was). Minnesota may be 0-4 in the Big Ten, but their other three losses were at (11) Maryland, against (22) OSU, and at Purdue.

Any player is coachable, and I can think of many more American exceptions to the "lack of fundamentals" cliche. In fact, I would say the majority of American basketball players are fundamentally sound, and the exceptions would be those few players who are not.

10-8 in the B1G would put us at 18-11 overall after the regular season and likely on the good side of the bubble going into the B1G Tourney.  Now it will take 12-6 to get to 18-11 pre-Tourney.

I think we've "held serve" at 3-1 thus far against the teams Massey considers to be the B1G's 6th, 8th, 10th, and 11th teams,  (Illinois, Minnesota, @Purdue, @Penn State.)

Fortunately, we play the 1st and 2nd best team only once each. (Wisconsin, @Maryland.)

I like to look at it as a glass half-full in that we're not eliminated from an at-large Big Dance ticket yet.

In all seriousness, what is the point in having Donnal in the post? Defensively, he's not even close to cutting it. He isn't strong enough and he plays like he knows it. Him getting eviscerated by every opponent's bigs seems to sap every bit of confidence out of him. Ugly watching him out there.

Edit: my question is more rhetorical, I get that there's really no one else to put there. Still don't get the Jon Horford transfer.

Too many mediocre teams outside Wisky and maybe Maryland. At least we are young and well coached - things will get better but our schedule will get tougher on the back half. I think a 10 -8 record would be outstanding for this team. Just lost too much the last two years to expect this team to be a tourney team that could go a few rounds.

The key to the season is Walton. If he starts hitting shots then this team has an extremely high ceiling. He can pass out of the pick and roll better than anyone else on the team. That pass to Doyle works because he can beat his man off the dribble, pull up and hit the J. This is without him being able to score at the rack. The team shooting is still sub optimal. Irvin and Levert are not shooting threes consistently enough so the ball action off the pick and roll whether it's Walton and Doyle or whomever is key.

I would like to see this team play more zone, specifically the 1-3-1.  Too often it feels like they are trading a high quality yet contested two pointer for an open three when they double out of their man to man.  It seems like playing zone well could improve the defense and also share Belein's value of not fouling.

In high school our rivals ran the 1-3-1 all the time and extended it to full court at times.  Some people say it would never work as the main defense, but I think it definitely could if executed correctly.  Yes, the corner three is left open sometimes and it can lead to layups/dunks, but the turnovers it creates more than make up for it, and Michigan's man defense has been a layup line without the turnovers at times.

With all that said, it's nice to see this team scrap.  A win in Columbus puts them back in business.

Brilein is terrific, but Minnesota is an average team at best. M still hoes through really long stretches without scoring and struggles to defend the glass against size and athleticism. Tuesday will be a good measuring stick for growth. OSU is long and athletic, we better be in that 1-3-1 zone and clog the lane cause OSU is just as streaky as we are shooting. 3-1 is a great start, defend your floor, steal 2-3 on the road. Beilein teams typically close strong do we appear headed in the right direction. Great to see Walton return to form
