there are more than one way to get wins. Even when not hitting 3's.
Bodes well for the future.

great win. Ricky doyle is becoming an important part of this team
January 10th, 2015 at 3:16 PM ^
Offensively challenged team so far, play their best down the stretch, don't pout or sulk when things going bad...played weaker BIG teams so far.,,young team so should get better.....DOYLE !!!!!!!!!

This team is slowly developing a toughness that will payoff tenfold the rest of this season and next.
January 10th, 2015 at 3:18 PM ^
these cardiac kids. two games in a row they play horribly, go down double digits then fight back for the win.

More Doyle, less Donnal

Kentucky and Texas A&M in OT. UK not as invincible as they originally appeared.
January 10th, 2015 at 3:28 PM ^
They are so badly coached its ridiculous. Give Beilein, Izzo, Matta, Ryan, Coach K, or whoever you want to name that's competent that roster and they don't lose a game or even come close.

Calipari's coaching: Shoot and go rebound it.
January 10th, 2015 at 3:35 PM ^
But they haven't lost a game.
Would they be even more undefeatederer with a different coach?

American basketball in general is all about 1 on 1 glitz and glamor. Hence why the NBA is switching to more European players who actually know fundamentals. The Kyrie Irvings of the world are not coachable. John Wall, Steph Curry, and Damian Lillard are exceptions.
January 10th, 2015 at 3:46 PM ^
This is a profoundly stupid statement. You say Americans lack fundamentals while listing several of the league's best passers and ball handlers.
January 10th, 2015 at 3:47 PM ^
I said exceptions.... I know they're American... I was referring to what Kobe stated about AAU and Europeans a couple days ago.
January 10th, 2015 at 3:57 PM ^
Kyrie Irving knows fundamentals.
The idea that very athletic players get by without fundamentals is dumb. Kam Chatman is very athletic. Doesn't make much of a difference when you don't know what you're doing, though.
January 10th, 2015 at 4:25 PM ^
I guess a better term would be coachability/strategy/spacing w/e the hell. I know they have the skillset.

and so, of course, the NBA--which now takes the best from anywhere in the world--will naturally field more foreign-developed talent now that there is more of it.

It would feel different if we had blown out those teams. Beating them by two would make the record look better. I wouldn't feel much different, though.

10-8 in the B1G would put us at 18-11 overall after the regular season and likely on the good side of the bubble going into the B1G Tourney. Now it will take 12-6 to get to 18-11 pre-Tourney.
I think we've "held serve" at 3-1 thus far against the teams Massey considers to be the B1G's 6th, 8th, 10th, and 11th teams, (Illinois, Minnesota, @Purdue, @Penn State.)
Fortunately, we play the 1st and 2nd best team only once each. (Wisconsin, @Maryland.)
I like to look at it as a glass half-full in that we're not eliminated from an at-large Big Dance ticket yet.

In all seriousness, what is the point in having Donnal in the post? Defensively, he's not even close to cutting it. He isn't strong enough and he plays like he knows it. Him getting eviscerated by every opponent's bigs seems to sap every bit of confidence out of him. Ugly watching him out there.
Edit: my question is more rhetorical, I get that there's really no one else to put there. Still don't get the Jon Horford transfer.
January 10th, 2015 at 3:32 PM ^
Doyle's stamina isn't where he can play 30 minutes a game and our only other option is Max. The McGary suspension and Horford transfer are murdering us.
January 10th, 2015 at 3:35 PM ^
Yep. I wonder if Donnal will stay down there when/if there is added depth?
January 10th, 2015 at 3:31 PM ^
Too many mediocre teams outside Wisky and maybe Maryland. At least we are young and well coached - things will get better but our schedule will get tougher on the back half. I think a 10 -8 record would be outstanding for this team. Just lost too much the last two years to expect this team to be a tourney team that could go a few rounds.

I would like to see this team play more zone, specifically the 1-3-1. Too often it feels like they are trading a high quality yet contested two pointer for an open three when they double out of their man to man. It seems like playing zone well could improve the defense and also share Belein's value of not fouling.
In high school our rivals ran the 1-3-1 all the time and extended it to full court at times. Some people say it would never work as the main defense, but I think it definitely could if executed correctly. Yes, the corner three is left open sometimes and it can lead to layups/dunks, but the turnovers it creates more than make up for it, and Michigan's man defense has been a layup line without the turnovers at times.
With all that said, it's nice to see this team scrap. A win in Columbus puts them back in business.

Man watching other college teams shoot free throws really puts into perspective how much better UM is at free throws...

Nice job on the throwbacks. Nice job on the win. All hail Coach B.
