Michigan -18 over MSU: UPDATE

Submitted by FauxMo on

How about this for crazy? I think -18 is crazy-low. I was guessing -21 at least, and -24 at the high end.

But if I had told you two months ago UM would be favored by 18 IN EAST LANSING this year, how many psychiatric wards would you have sent me to???

I'll bet that line ends up closer to -24 than -18... :-DDD

EDIT: Just checked the line again, and it's already been bet-up to UM -21. Now THAT seems a little better...

I just hope its lopsided from the beginning. How awesome would it be to throw out our second string offense AND defense against Sparty in EL? That would be demoralizing for their program.

Lets not be too over confident this week.

OSU was a 19.5 point favorite to beat Penn State and we all saw how that worked out for OSU.

MSU has saved every trick in their play book for us .

I think we should all remain cautiously optimistic that we can beat them down . We all know what should happen , but as the cliche goes, thats why they play the games .

Actually I have seen MSU pull out quite a few tricks in the attempt to win the past 2-3 weeks. They will be the most motivated they have been all year for this game though.

That said - notice the difference between M's approach vs. Rutgers and IU - Jim called off the dogs quite early against Smith but let Ash feel the full brunt of our efforts. MSU gonna die this week...."where all the Wolverines at?", "those who came are already champions" etc. have not been forgotten by Mr. Harbaugh.

My guess is it'll be bumped to 20 once people start putting in their bets. They'll try to keep it close, but show me one unit on MSU that is better than the counterpart at UM. You probably can't (save maybe place kicking), and in lots of areas UM is demonstrably better. UM should roll.

Msu is obviously out for blood. This game makes me a little nervous. I just want Michigan to beat the living hell out of them. I want to see dantonio pissed at the world and Spartan stadium 3/4 empty by the 4th quarter. I can't stand Msu.

Barring injury or natural disaster type wind/rain, we should cruise in this one.  We will want this win more than they will after last year's game and all that rides on this season.

We need to win this game - I'll give it 4.5 John L. Smith smacks to the face out 5 on the urgency meter.

what will happen in a game that hasn't been played yet. Yet if we open a game with a bad drive, it's all over and we suck according to the open thread..(seriously, 1st page of the Rutgers thread is hilarious).

I've never seen people on here more certain of a win than this one even though it's on the road against a rival who has typically beaten us over the last decade.  That sort of bravado alone makes me nervous.

There's no magical quality to wishing something to happen, we all badly want to beat State, we all badly want to *destroy* State, we all think that we're good enough to do it, but guess what it's 60 minutes on the field, a lot of stuff can happen, a lot of adversity can come our way, nobody will know the outcome of this until next Saturday afternoon.

That's how it is if you're the kind of guy who considers idiots talking smack on sports radio the height of quality entertainment.

I've been a sports fan for 25 years and I've never been the kind of guy who goes around telling everyone how awesome my team is for winning games that haven't been played yet. When I come across those guys I tend to think they're jackasses.

Because you are afraid to take the lost as a man. During rivalry week you are supposed to talk shit non stop. If we win it will be a beautifull day if we loose then you just take the pill and move on. I am not saying be THAT guy who talks shit before the game and doesnt like to take it when his team ends up loosing. Its sport life moves on win/loose.

I've seen some people here say they're a little worried. Like it's their super bowl, they'll be fired up, etc... Who cares!? You honestly think Michigan isn't going have laser sharp focus this week with the intent to unleash years of fury onto a severely overmatched opponent? MSU is going to get crushed and it will be glorious. Michigan wins 56-7.

I agree. This will be and is always states Super Bowl. This year, it is 1 of ours too. I would imagine this game has been circled for a year now and you can bet your ass the boys are just drooling at the mouth to line up against MSU no matter what the records are. I expect a close game in the 1st half but we will pull away in the 3rd and 4th.

This is not your Brady Hoke Wolverines, too many people with post traumatic Hoke disorder. Too many people talking up Sparty, a 2-5 Sparty. This game is over by halftime.

So, we should fear MSU because they're going to be fired up? Motivated? It's their Super Bowl? This thought implies a few silly things. 1) Michigan won't be fired up to avenge last year's loss and continue the current season's success. 2) Being motivated is enough to hide their glaring weaknesses. They have weaknesses damn near everywhere on the field. 3) This is not Lloyd Carr's Michigan. This team will not walk on the field expecting to win just by showing up. This Michigan team respects every opponent and the game enough to know their A-game all the time. Rivalry magic is always possible. But, unlikely as hell in this match up because there is very little for MSU to exploit. People see upsets in think Cinderella or magic or some shit. But, if the game is watched objectively you'll see mistakes being made by the favored team while the underdog takes advantage with sound strategy and play. Can MSU do that enough to win?

The big favorite has to make a lot of mistakes in terms of turnovers, blocked punts, blocked FG's, giving up special team TD's, failing to score TD's in red zone, etc.

OSU had their game in hand 21-7 before they started their avalanche of mistakes that cost them this game. They thought the game was over at 21-7 and played like it the rest of the way. Same way they derped their MSU game at home last year.

The key will be how Michigan sees and plays this game. If they have the right mindset this week as players and coaches, we will be fine. It seems to me this team has that special mindset required to be Champions.

I will never forget how that game ended last year, I can't imagine how that felt on the players. They're going to come out with a chip on their shoulder, ready to kick ass.

Michigan State was going to have a down year this year BEFORE the attrition hit. Most of the guys they recruited who were supposed to be 3rd / 4th / 5th year players right now have left the program. They were almost out of bodies and then they lost some more guys on top of that.

Just look at how our defensive line matches up with their offensive line.

Wormley -- 5th-year senior; 23-years-old.

Godin -- 5th-year-senior; 23-years-old.

Glasgow -- 5th-year-senior; 23-years-old.

Charlton -- Senior; 22-years-old.

vs.

Cole Chewins -- Freshman; 19-years-old; (probably playing in place of Kieler who got hurt).

Tyler Higby -- Freshman; 19-years-old.

Brian Allen -- Junior; 21-years-old; (playing hurt).

Benny McGowan -- 5th-year-senior; 22-years-old; (playing hurt).

Thiyo Lukusa -- Freshman; 18-years-old; (likely starting over some transfer player who gives up a sack on almost every passing play).

That alone tells me that this is going to be a blood bath. Michigan is WAY bigger, stronger, faster, and more experienced across the board, and that's especially true in the trenches. I will be disappointed if MSU gains more than 50 total yards and I will be utterly shocked if they find a way to score. It's just not realistically possible for them to sustain offense when we have that much of an advantage in the trenches.
