McGary's NBA workout

Mitch looks petty good in this video.  He is knocking down 3s at a high percentage.

Although I think he's not quite ready for the NBA at this very moment (physical maturity), I do think he'll be fine and in 1-3 years I'd estimate him to be a starter somewhere.

He is at least a year older than everyone else in his class. He's about as physically mature as one can get.

The things limiting him most is recovering from his injury, and probably the Xs and Os learning that he missed out on by sitting last year and then being forced out. I'm sure he studied film and whatnot, but missing valuable playing time hurts.

I'm not sure if "Xs and Os" is the right term, but I think that understanding a team's defensive philosophy -- being able to mike the right rotations in a reflexive sort of way, knowing which way you're forcing the dribbler in different situations, etc. -- is a pretty big deal. It's not the same as memorizing a 100-page play book, but it can still definitely take some time. If you look at players' defensive win shares, for example, they tend to rise for their first few years in the league, even when those players are physically well-developed (see Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, etc.).

Also, with respect to physical maturity, I think McGary definitely has room for improvement. He's old for his class, but I'm assuming that his "weightroom age" is still pretty young. I think he can definitely still benefit from dropping body fat, adding lean mass, and gaining more explosiveness.

Joey: I think you're the greatest, but my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense. And he says that lots of times, you don't even run down court. And that you don't really try... except during the playoffs.

Murdock: The hell I don't! Listen, kid. I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night. Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes.

Sad. Mitch played so little for us that I forgot he shoots his jumper lefty but uses either hand around the hoop.  Damn, we were just getting to know the kid...

He's obviously working with Stauskus - just look at his string of 3-pointers!

But being able to finish around the rim with either hand is almost a universal skill for any college level player. I'd be more surprised if he couldn't make a right handed bank shot (being a lefty) from 8 feet out.

Looks like he's developed a nice stroke.  Wish we could have seen Mitch play for an entire, healthy,  year.  That would have been fun to watch.  Best of luck to him.  We'll definately miss the big fella and his hustle and enthusiasm.

That is highly encouraging for Mitch.

I think some team will take a flyer on him late in the first.  He's obviously been working hard on his shot.  I have no idea if he will be able to consistently extend out to NBA 3 range, but if he could do that, and if he can have a healthy career (two HUGE IFs), you could be looking at a player whose ceiling is a Kevin Love type player.

Obviously a million things have to go right for him to even be 50% of Kevin Love.  But that might be enough for some team to take a flyer on him.  Remember, Kevin Love only hit 2 3-pointers in his rookie season, so this kind of thing can be developed in a big man who has a good shooting stroke.  Maybe only rarely but it can be developed.

I'm looking forward to rooting for McGary in the NBA, though.  He will be an absolute steal so long as he stays healthy.

Obligatory:  The NCAA should be tied down in a room full of fire ants for six hours and then dumped in a tank of acid.
