M fan in Charlotte for the Tourney…what do I wear to piss off Sparty fans?!

Submitted by cbecerrajr on March 20th, 2024 at 12:41 AM

Long time reader, first time poster.

I live in Greenville, SC and one of my buddies lives in Charlotte. We have two friends coming down from Michigan and we’ll be at all 3 sessions this weekend in the Charlotte Round 1 and 2 games. Hitting March Madness as a group has been whispers for years, but we’re finally doing it!

2 of us are Michigan fans, ones a Buckeye 😒, and the other plays for both sides ( Michigan and Sparty). I haven’t concluded who’s worse. The cooler pooper or the guy who would most likely wear a hat with the letters “NBA” to an NBA game.

Anyways, we get the unfortunate punishment of seeing izzo in the first game on Thursday. So…what the heck should I wear?  Michigan National Championship Tshirt/Hoodie to remind every Sparty fan…old or young…know that I know how bad they are at football?  A simple blue M block on gray Tshirt to subtly let every Sparty fan in the Queen City know that I know how bad they are at football? Or say screw it because it’s a basketball tournament and we weren’t invited?

Gonna take cuts here to say Niko Medved's team from a mid major whooped up on a perennially good ACC team in Virginia by 25 points.

His squad looked organized, balanced, defended and rebounded really well.

I sure hope Warde is paying attention, but a question for me is why is he getting a fat salary yet he hires a search firm?

WTF does he do to earn that salary?

Considering Michigan BB had their worst season since the Johnson administration and had to fire a legendary player as HC in the process, I’d probably sit this play out and try again next year (but probably not).

Wear whatever you want but there's no way your outfit choice is going to piss off MSU fans at a tournament they qualified for when we just had our worst season in decades.

I think the idea of going out of our way to annoy another fan base isn't worth the effort.

At best I'd contemplate wearing the National Champions t-shirt with all the game scores on the back - and when the random Sparty heckles you for your team not being good at the basketballs I'd smile and say (with sincerity and acceptable enthusiasm) "you've got that right - horrible basketball season for us.  But good luck to your team in the tournament!"

The good sportsmanship and kindness will likely be the most frustrating move you can make.

Make a T-shirt.

117 - 74...

(Make the 117 maize or blue and the 74 crimson bleeding)

Then underneath in green text "...and we don't care about you"

Definitely the national champs gear, so you can smile and remind them that Michigan won it all in football when they try to troll you about basketball.

Wear anything Michigan. We are still the defending National F’ing Champions and the Greatest University in the World. Unlike Sparty, when our program sees lows, we always bounce back because, well, see above about being the greatest university in the world. Sparty is an above average basketball school that, aside from a short period during which Michigan was so bad that the better in-state players chose MSU (rich rod and Hoke years) has largely been irrelevant in football for decades.

I see eye-to-eye with you on everything but the last part. Hoke outrecruited Dantonio in Michigan and it wasn't even close. As for "DickRod" (who, according to a few observers, alienated every HS football coach in Michigan), yeah, he got smoked in 2009. Even so, I see only a couple impact Sparty players from his years (Dion Sims and the guy who tried to decapitate Denard).

I think it's largely a myth that Dantonio's success was fueled by highly recruited players who'd ordinarily choose Michigan. It had much more to do with coaching malpractice (RichRod, Hoke).

One of many examples, here's the recruiting profile of the guy who's arguably Dantonio's best product:

I don't see a Michigan offer there. Le'Veon Bell didn't have one, either.

No, this is easy. The person that does the "state of Michigan" bullshit, as some call it, where they cheer for Michigan or MSU situationally, is far worse and cannot be trusted. At least the OSU fan is likely to be all in on their team in that psychotic way that only Buckeye fans can achieve sometimes.

Honestly, don't bother. Michigan fans (at least when it comes to basketball) have NOTHING to poke fun and heckle about. Got swept by MSU, didn't make the tournament, and had our worst season in decades. Maybe sit the next couple plays out, Champ.

I remember rolling my eyes when a bunch of MSU fans showed up to the first two rounds of the 2013 tournament in Detroit wearing SDSU and VCU clothing, just to try and piss off Michigan fans. Just my $0.02, I wouldn't say its worth stooping to their level.

This has a "little brother" feel to it.  Just let Miss. State dish out the misery.

If I were you, I might wear a Michigan hockey jersey in anticipation of this weekend's B1G championship game.  But then, I'm not a basketball guy anyway.

I agree with some of the previous statements.  Feels a bit "Little Brother-ish" to go this route.  Wear your National Championship gear if you do anything but that's about it.  I remember going to watch the Michigan South Carolina bowl game (The Clowney game) at a watch party and some Sparty went and bought a South Carolina jersey ostensibly to piss us off I guess.  We just laughed at his dumbass for spending money and time on this idea.

Like most here I think this is a fools errand given how shitty our basketball team was this year but if you insist maybe wear a shirt with a really big word on it.   Maybe something like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?

Definitely a national championship shirt, but don't say anything about it or Michigan's basketball year. Take the high road verbally and let Michigan's play on the gridiron speak for you and the entire university. It's the player's gift to us to use as we please.

Edit: I guess I should've read all the comments first and just upvoted rather than make a redundant comment.

I agree with those that's say this is "little brotherish" and I would try not to draw any extra attention to the fact that we don't even have a basketball team, currently.

It’s like when Spartan fans bought loads of app state gear. Just cheer for your own team or if you have any ties or emotional favorites. Personally I would be wearing my Michigan hat and call it a day

I'd wear something neutral. If you wear anything Michigan, then you might end up having to talk about Stallions to fans of any school. Do you want to deal with that for two days or do you want to just enjoy basketball? That place is going to be overrun with UNC (The Timeout) and Tennessee (Peyton was robbed) fans.
