John U. Bacon: The Leaking comes from Jim Stapleton

Submitted by Maison Bleue on October 25th, 2023 at 11:06 AM

He was on Morning Juice(97.1 The Fan in Columbus) this morning and said "As far as the leaking goes, I would guarantee that is where it's coming from(Jim Stapleton).

Exactly; if I recall from cheeseburger-gate, UM and Harbaugh were prohibited from commenting - the NCAA was free to comment, or at least they did.  Now they have a new leak - slow drip - every day about this code breaking.  What's going at the NCAA?  Do they think their job is to produce negative PR for their member schools?

And doesn't that give Michigan ammo for some future counter-lawsuit?

This guy should be recused from anything having to do with Michigan.  No, more than that, his unprofessional behavior disqualifies him from ever serving on any NCAA committee.

It’s truly astonishing how folks hold grudges over the most petty things. This Stapleton dude reeks of insecurity and lack of general fulfillment.

Believe me, I recognize I’m the worst, and I couldn’t look myself in the mirror to deliberatively destroy my alma mater due to resentment over Ron fucking English. Thanks for putting Johnny Sears in man coverage asshole.

Certainly could be, but my money is on someone getting involved in Vegas.  College football in general, every major decision is driven by money.  My guess (which is what anyone here or anywhere has at this point) is Vegas tipped the NCAA off as they have people crunching numbers constantly that something was strange.  NCAA started reaching out to schools, now most of the B1G and some others are submitting info.

I can be completely wrong, but at this point nobody knows what is right.  It's speculation at the very best.  Which leaves my logical reasoning to take me to money being the motivator.

Vegas is going to drive a lot now that gambling is pretty much legal everywhere.

I'm interested in why JUB felt it necessary to divulge this information.

Puts on tin foil hat

(Insert improbable rumor that tarnishes Stapleton's reputation here)

Yeah, I was looking for your thread from the other day and couldn't find it, was going to link in the OP.

Then I went to the Sticky thread and saw it had been nuked along with others, but only after I started the board thread. Sorry, Seth/Moms if this is off-base.

A quick Google search indicates that the story about JUB naming Stapleton has been picked up by many media outlets. The interwebz are a remarkably efficient information distribution method!  It would be good if the story evolves in the next couple days to why is an obviously biased individual sitting on the infractions committee.

By no means should I be viewed as an insider with access to a plethora of coveted information. I happen to have a (very unimportant) job that coincidentally brings me into close proximity with many well connected people in Ann Arbor. I do hear a bit of interesting gossip from time to time that I would never dream of sharing here because I know there's a high likelihood that most of it is BS. I actually assumed that this story was mostly BS until the guy who shared it with me sent me some articles that backed up what he'd said, and I shared this with some friends. One also did some digging and found more info and the next thing you know I had a story to share that anyone could reasonably conclude was legitimate. Frankly this could have happened to anyone.

But if you want to follow this specific topic I'd recommend John U Bacon. He has known of Stapleton for many years and tried to tweet out my original post and now he's bringing it up on the radio so his interest is definitely piqued.

History is littered with weak men who have done from the absurd and ridiculous to horrific and unforgivable acts, explained from a simple Freudian analysis…

At some point, you have to wonder just how much hatred someone carries that they are willing to blindly and actively sabotage their own school’s program and the kids who play for it just so they can “get back” at a man who they feel did them wrong, or one of their good friends wrong.

Like, if you hate Harbaugh that’s fine. He is not everyone’s cup of tea. He is a weird, weird guy. But the fact that (if he is the source of all this) Stapleton is willing to nuke his alma mater into the ground just for personal satisfaction and getting revenge for your buddy who didn’t turn out to be that good of a head coach anyway…..I don’t know, it must not be healthy to carry THAT MUCH hatred inside you.

In any case, I don't see how him being involved with the Infractions Committee isn't a MASSIVE conflict of interest in this situation, and if I'm the Michigan brass, there's no way in hell I leave this meeting with the NCAA without discussing that at the table. If all of this information about him as true, there is no way on this planet he can act as an impartial judge. In fact he made up his mind on what he would do the minute Harbaugh was hired. It doesn't matter what Michigan would have to say or counter-evidence. Stapleton is already voting guilty.

I'm all for getting to the bottom of what happened, but if you want to be fair about this, how in the hell can you not require Stapleton to recuse himself from any future proceedings involving this case?

Its so weird. Its a classic example of someone high up on the social ladder that has to find something to keep busy. Blowing up your alma mater is an interesting choice, but some people are just assholes. You also can't separate "alma mater" from the kids that are on the team. I think people do and say things with a degree of separation in their minds, but forget that college kids are working their asses off and are ultimately the ones that get tied up and hurt in all of this. None of us will really give a shit in 10 years regardless of the outcome, but the players that may end up getting screwed sure will. From what I gather, Mr. Stapleton gives no shits about the players though.

Beyond that, I would say it taints all of the current investigations against JH and Michigan.  If they can try to bury Michigan for what a staffer did, well then Michigan can try to bury the NCAA for what their own committee member is doing.

Warde should (but probably won't) tell them that if they so much as look in JH's direction, then there will be the biggest lawsuit that the NCAA has ever seen.  And they always lose in court.
