If Harbaugh wants to come

Submitted by SFBayAreaBlue on

It obvious that RR only cares about offense, the special teams and defense are just putrid.  I said if he got 6 wins he'd earn another year.  But if harbaugh wants to come now, we should give him the job.  I'm writing this with 2 minutes to go in the half down by 17.  Hopefully there will be karmic justice that makes me eat these words and we pull out an amazing comeback.  But we suck.

We can't kick, we can't cover kicks, we have poorly coached, undisciplined freelancers on defense, our best receiver can't catch a cold ball, and our best runner is a twig who keeps getting hurt and dropping the ball.

Switching head coaches now will be another painful transition.  But I'm almost an old man now and i'm looking more at the longterm.  RR is not a long term answer.  I wouldn't mind giving him the OC job.  But I doubt he'd take the demotion  Anyway, if we switch wake me up in 4 years when he have a chance of being a good team again.

Bring in Harbaugh - he'll make those catches; kick beyond the end zone every time; never fumble; prevent all injuries ...

Go find yourself another team to denigrate.

That's right, bring in Harbaugh

He can make this a team, do what RichRod hasn't done. Sure we have Denard, but I think we have all heard this before.

but you have to believe he would bring a sense of toughness that has been lacking on this defense since RR arrived.

The turnovers and lack of execution is on the coaching staff and this defense that always looks lost on pass plays is partially a coaching issue.  Also again, recruiting for defense is suspect.

Speed is one thing, Speed and no size is completely another.  5'6" running backs and 5'8" CBs might work in the Big East, not in the Big Ten when the receivers are 6'3".  And don't bring up the Jamie Morris argument.  His O-Line were all 300-plus.  We recruit O-lineman at 260

Maybe it's not his system; maybe it's his system in the Big Ten. I have been 100% behind RR but I'm starting to move to the other side, and that doesn't necessarily mean I'm against him. It means that I look at our little, speedy team going up against the freight trains of the Big Ten and see the freight trains winning.

Maybe this was an interesting experiment that didn't pan out because it relies too much on very specific players. And then all those specific players have to work in sync with each other in very specialized ways. We, the Michigan fan base, just don't have that kind of patience.

weeks have made it difficult to not admit the obvious shortcomings.  RR is a great man of integrity, there is no question and \he is also a great offensive mind, but he certainly seems over his head as the head man in AA.

They just gave a 98-yarder.  FIRE THEM ALL NOW.  THIS IS EMBARRASSING.

edit: that holding call is weak.

If we do decide to transition, i'm dreading the divisive Harbaugh-comments civil war that will erupt, especially if we struggle in his first season.  Ah, what a few less Roundtree drops or healthier ankles could have done for our fanbase this year.

I can't picture Harbaugh being anywhere near as divisive as RR was.  The biggest opposition would be those that don't want a coaching change in the first place for whatever reason, but I'd imagine that even some of those folks would be ok with Harbaugh if they're forced to accept a change.  Meanwhile, those that DO want to see a change would include younger fans who'd be excited about getting a successful big name coach, plus older fans who'd appreciate the return to a former Michigan Man.  So I'd forsee very little divisiveness if we do end up with JH, which I have to say seems to be the best-case scenario for this offseason.

This game will definitely be the nail in the coffin for RR, and the end of an error.  He's one of the brighter minds in college football and would make a great OC at Michigan, but he's proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he'll never, ever win in the Big 10.  While the offense generally improved by leaps and bounds, he irreparably harmed the defense and special teams and took them significantly backwards.  He lost too many games this team should have won, never came up with any big wins and overall has left the team worse than when he came here.  I think he was the best candidate that was actually available at the time we hired him, and an exciting experiment, but Brandon needs progress and RR definitely hasn't brought that.  Good luck to RR on his coaching career elsewhere after this year, and even more luck to Brandon on landing a head coach that will bring us back and won't lead us astray defensively.

Even if you think RR should be fired after this (which I don't), how can you say that hiring him was an error?  Looking back at our choices after Lloyd retired, what coach would you have rathered Michigan hired?  HIndsight is 20/20.

Ok, here's what I'm wondering.  The way the announcers are talking, it sounds like they're referring to specific reports that came out this week indicating RR would be gone.

I don't recall seeing any such reports this week.  Anyone know what the're referring to?

consider walking away from the keyboard.  i did a few minutes ago and i'm now writing this reply in a much gentler tone than I would've before.  hell, let's all go out for a beer and just talk about which bowl game we're playing in.

Think that Harbaugh is going to do so great at Michigan?  Because he is doing well at Stanford?  Well, Rich Rod was doing insanely well at WVU and he has 2 BCS bowl wins in 2 BCS appearances.

Last year, Stanford went 8-5.  This year they're 10-1.  Harbaugh had much more experience on defense, FWIW.  Michigan might be looking at 8-5 this year, depending on the bowl.

This is what I don't get either. Rod was the man 3 years ago. Everyone wanted him. Now, people think he is an idiot that can't coach and they want a guy with less accolades. I am not saying JH can't do it, but why do people think JH is a sure thing?

Maybe not Harbaugh, but Gus Malzahn is our best chance to snag an up-and-comer from a title team, and he provides a much smoother transition period than Harbaugh.  Malzahn will definitely be a hot commodity after this season, and if we don't snag him now, someone else will.

Malzahn is Rodriguez-light. He runs the exact same offense. I don't see how you can not want Rodriguez, widely accepted as one of the brightest offensive minds in football, but want Malzahn, who runs the same offense as RichRod & has no head coaching experience. Michigan would look the exact same except the offense would maybe be not as good. You are a fucking moron.

Harbaugh's style has clearly worked in the Big 10, and I think that's a big difference and counts for something.  He's also a hell of a recruiter and I think he has the capability to bring together a very polarized fanbase.

I've been RR's biggest supporter through the last 3 years, but I'm frustrated that there just doesn't appear to be enough emphasis on fundamentals (good tackling, preventing turnovers, preventing turnovers, etc.).

Just my 2 cents, hope I don't get negged.  I won't comment on RR's job status till this game is over.  GO BLUE!

Progress from 08 to 10 based on OSU games? MSU? Iowa? ___________ Insert good team?

I know it doesn't matter what I think, and I am rather ambiguous about the whole RR stay or go meme; but the supporters are pointing to the offense as a reason for hope.

I don't see it against quality teams when the offense is needed.

Harbaugh will still be available in 2012. Our team isn't doing well, but they're mostly freshmen and sophomores. Let's see what RR can do when this team has juniors and seniors, and then decide.

exmtroj

November 27th, 2010 at 2:58 PM ^

No way Harbaugh is available in 2012.  Harbaugh and Malzahn will be the two hottest items in college football/the NFL in a couple of weeks, and they'll both move soon.  Malzahn might go before bowl season, and Harbaugh will as well unless an NFL team picks him up post-season.

Please stop mentioning Malzahn like you have the previous 3 posts in this thread. You don't want Rich Rod, but you want someone who runs Rich's offensive philosophy and has succeeded because of the most dynamic player in CFB? Stop posting for the night

has taken his foot off the gas?  Just like the last two years.  Say what you will b/c he's in CBus, but he's classy enough to know norto run Michigan out of town.

Unfortunately, our offense has stalled again against the better teams in the conference.  Dennard hurt or not.  They just haven't been effective today.

People only need to watch Stanford play and that will answer questions about Harbaugh and what he would bring here.

The issue isn't if he is a great coach or if he would be a great fit here.  The obvious answer is yes.

The issue is results. The fans just want the program back. If you are certain Rich Rodriguez can deliver that, keep him.  So far he has not taken advantage of any of the opportunities to make his case.  Just give the fans and the AD reason to believe beyond  asking us to extrapolate what we hope we might be.  Give our rivals reason to fear us again.

This is happening in the backdrop of Michigan State physically pounding a Penn State team that ate our lunch 5 weeks ago.   The world turns and we ain't the only ones getting better year to year.

David Brandon will do the right thing.

We just want our program back.

RR's a great offensive coordinator, but can we continue to allow him time to become a Head Coach in a major conference?  He may be great in time, but at this time I don't think that he's shown the ability to be a HC in a major.

The Big East has certainly proven that it doesn't belong in the conversation at a major when UConn (UConn WTF!) can be the champion after being rolled and held in check by a historically bad Michigan defense.

We've blamed Shaffer, Hopson, and GERG for the past 3 years of wandering in the desert.  Maybe it is time to place the blame on the man at the top?

The Mgo readers have read about the vaunted offense and the stats. The yards support group is eroding. If all RR has at this point is his offense, it's not a strong enough 'metric' to continue this farce.

I know DROB is the first 2K 1500K QB. Great.

I know everyone is coming back.

I know there are other arguments about the good. I understand that part. The reality is the scoreboard. It's the only thing that counts in D1 football. Building character, doing what is right are important things and if everyone played with that currency, than we wouldn't need scoreboards.

RR is doing a good job with the character side and I'd take that. As long as everyone else kept score that way. Since the game is rigged that way, away from hard work in the weight room, Mealer tear stories, family atmosphere; RR has been an abject failure as the head coach of a football team in the execution phase.

Make him the OC and student advisor to the team and let someone else be responsible.

However, I am going to keep my mouth shut, and step away. No sense in having my emotions, override rational thought. I have to build a computer, might as well go get started.
