How long would you give JH to decide?

Submitted by MonkeyMan on

Right now the great coaching shuffle is beginning- people are getting offers, counteroffers are coming back, then replies, talking to trustees, etc. this is an intense but fast paced process.

And this is just the first round- once coaches are picked then there is another grab for the best assistants, offers, counters, etc. Assistants can make or break a program in some cases.

Most teams are moving on their prime coaching candidates, then option B, C and do on. Options close and new options are considered

At some point a team can lose just by coming late to the dance and finding no more suitable dates

So, if you were on the committee, how long would you give JH to make a decision? we could wait weeks and he could say "no" and the program could be stuck with another 4 years of substandard coaching and some plan "G" coach.

How much do you gamble and when do you fold your hand?

One Week Ago
Yes or no! The rest is just details. I have accepted many job assignments in the first few minutes of the offer. This is not a hard decision and I am sure Harbaugh has thought about these vacancy situations. Do it or move on!

He is not a coaching god.  He has plenty of baggage and there are other great coaches who actually want to be here.

All we are doing right now is stroking his enormously huge ego so he can say no later.

Move along.  His family is in California and he wants to be a coach in the NFL.

Mora, Pinkel, Miles.

If he wanted to be here he would have said yes.  He didn't.

This opinion is ridiculous in so many ways. The guy is still in the playoff hunt and you expect him to publicly state to the media, Niners franchise, and his team that he plans to go to michigan?!?! Not only would that be totally unprofessional, but it wreaks of an incredibly selfish attitude that we as fans would even ask him to be in that position. I am very happy YOU are not leading this search.

No, I don't expect him to do that. But I do expect him to decide if he wants to be here or in the NFL pretty damn soon. Nothing is gained by waiting 3 more weeks only for him to wake up one morning and say "fuck it, I want a Super Bowl ring". Decide now, get your people to work on making the deal behind the scenes and then resign on 12/29 first thing.

No more of this "50-50" or "60-40" shit. Once he's said no we could wrap this shit up in 5 days.

Are you saying that the coaches you've named (Mora, Pinkel and Miles) have said yes?

This knowing we are still after Harbaugh?

Well, they don't seem to mind. So what's there to lose by waiting?

Incidentally, I don't think we've made three offers that have been accepted.

and an NFL team???  I mean, Michigan plays one Thursday night game, then Saturdays.  He's young enough and lively enough to work on a Saturday and Sunday, right?

As far as I know, Jim Harbaugh still has two eyes.  Two eyes.  Two iPads for film.

Hackett has an in with the NFL - whatever NFL team Jim coaches will play on either Thursdays or Mondays.  Why?  Because this is MICHIGAN fergodsakes.

They have holograms and shit now too.  He'll switch between real Jim and hologram Jim with assurances that he'll be in Ann Arbor in person the week of the MSU and OSU games and will be with the NFL program during divisional rivals weeks.

On one hand, JH hates Pete Carroll and will be very busy planning for that game.  So there would be reasons to wait until after that game.  But if SF beats Sea, then SF's chances of making the playoff increase.

On the other hand, if he gets clobbered by at Sea, as many expect, he will not be in a good mood.  People make more favorable judgments when in a good mood.  So, that would be an argument for waiting until after he wins a game.  Then make a big push.

The trouble is: if he wins too many games, then SF is in the playoffs.  The best time might be the first SF win after SF is eliminated (hopefully by another team's win, not SF's loss).

Just because Harbaugh hasn't said it publicly, hardly means Hackett doesn't have an answer. My guess is what's going on right now is either a PR rope-a-dope because Harbaugh has verbally accepted on the condition it is kept confidential until the 49ers season is over, or he has declined and Michigan's legitimately searching and is about to be stuck with Greg goddamn Schiano.

If JH gave a firm answer we'd have a coach in here next week.  My main positive is Hackett supposedly told players they'd have a coach after they come back after the new year break.  So he is basically giving himself a month.  So that would indicate JH has not said no.  That doesnt mean he said yes.

But the serious answer to this is we'll know by the end of the year.  Its an eternity in internet time but 3ish weeks is not that long from here.

I believe I read somewhere - possibly in one of the threads here recounting the countless rumors to date - that Harbaugh was already given a deadline for making a decision, although like many other rumors about this, there's no independent confirmation right now. It definitely assumes that someone with the power to lay down such things in fact has already spoken to Harbaugh. Supposedly, it was next weekend but I suppose all we can realistically do is wait here and see what happens.

Who's going to be competing with us for coaches at this point? Nebraska and Florida are filled, we have time.

With SF down to Oakland right now and Zona/Seattle leading their games, this thing could escalate pretty quickly. If the owner sent a tweet out after Thanksgiving game, I can only imagine what will ensue with a loss to Oakland!

And it looks like with Dallas winning and Seattle and AZ leading - if all this holds SF is not mathematically eliminated but playing like dog shit vs 1-11 Oakland with Seattle road game next week, they are done.  No playoffs.

Dont think SF is firing anyone.  If Harbaugh wants to go to another NFL team they have him as trade bait.  No reason to not keep him 3 games to get something for him if he plans to coach in the NFL.  A few draft picks is worth keeping him around.  So dont count on a firing.

That said...FIRE JIM HARBAUGH

If Harbaugh needs more time to decide after today, then move on. It's silly to wait a few weeks for him to make up his mind. He either wants to be Michigan's coach or he doesn't. He's had the last few months while Hoke was on the hot seat to think about it too. It should take like 5 seconds for him to decide if he wants to coach at Michigan.

As long as he needs to come to a decision that he's comfortable with. There's a dead period for recruiting starting in about a week and goes until January 15th. With how the games played out today, the chance of the 49ers making the playoffs are pretty slim atm. Even if he needed a week after the season to figure out what he wants to do, I would think that he could pull a staff together pretty quickly to be able to recruit the final 2.5-3 weeks before NSD. Honestly though, with how the 49ers look like they've given up, I wouldn't be shocked at all if he was dismissed this week.

Unique situation. Jim is the only great candidate out there. Glad we are conducting search and lining up backup plans. However, if there is 25% chance he comes, we can't hire anyone else until he says no.

He tells the world he is going to take the Michigan job at the end of the NFL year and that his contract will be bought out, traded to Michigan for money whatever. He hires Mattison as his DC and any other person he would like to retain from the prior coaching staff to recruit and to keep the current players from bolting.

I think his players will play harder knowing he will be gone.

In 3 weeks when the 49ers are kicked out of the playoffs (or next week when Seattle kills them) he begins the transition.

That is if he actually wants to come back to Michigan but still show his current players that he is honoring them and their season.

I don't think he actually wants to come back though.

Bold prediction.  49ers fire him tonight after the loss to Oakland  and perhaps the GM's daughter even tweets it.
