Hoke Isn't Going to Get Another Job This Year, is He?

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Aside from being part of the initial laundry lists at Colorado State and Oregon State, have we heard one word about a possible landing spot for Brady Hoke?

He's seriously limited on potential options. He's not a successful Power 5 coach, so those jobs are out. He's not a coordinator, so those jobs are out.

That leaves the San Diego States and Youngstown States of the world. Bo Pelini snapped up the one good job that was available on that level.

So what are you hearing about Hoke? Is he going to be Tommy Amaker (good guy who lands in a quirky situation and succeeds), or is he going to be Brian Ellerbee (guy who just disappears. Totally disappears.)?

What becomes of Hoke? Anyone hearing anything?

Sam Webb has been hinting that GMatt might be back as a LBs/Co-DC with the Co-DC being mainly a title thing (like Fickell at OSU).  His family is very attached to the A2 area at present kids/grandkids.  He and Manning (the other most likely to be retained imo) are great recruiters and seem like decent coaches as well.

No offense to the man.... but I hope it is time for Freddy J. to move on.  Time for some new blood at RB coach.

Mattison and manning are likely to stay on board, as well as a GA or two (Koger for example). I would also like to see Hecklinski stay on board, but JH has connections to several good receiver coaches so I could see him bringing in his own guy. As for Hoke, I think he ends up as a D-line coach at a power 5 or even in the NFL. His bro is a solid position coach at that level and I see him doing the same thing. Hoke is a great glue guy and a valuable part of a good staff. DB just tried to make him something he is not.

Agree 100percent!!!!!!!!!! I can't ever understand why any person in their right mind actually thinks that the coach who just got fired would stay on and become a D line coach. One that is just dumb to think and two Hoke couldn't even get our D Line to perform when he was head coach. Why in the hell would we want him here coaching them? Talking to recruits parents and staff members from other teams they all said the techniques that were being taught at Michigan by Hoke and staff were 10yrs old and outdated.

Head coach. He left Michigan under Carr to strike out on his own at lowly Ball State, starting with few resources, even with shower curtains dividing the "offices" yet he stayed for a long time and built it up from nothing. Unless no jobs are forthcoming and he gets a prestigious position coach gig for recruiting purposes he wants to be a head coach.

"... built it up from nothing ..."

That's some goofy revisionist history. In his lightning-in-a-bottle year (12-2) he took the school to new heights, but if you look at the rest of the years he was just slightly better than the previous guy. The school fell off a cliff when he left.

You'd be better off using San Diego State as an example. It *appears* that he changed the culture for the better there and lifted them to another level (which has been maintained well by Rocky Long).

The Michigan fan in me is glad Pitt hired Narduzzi, just to get him away from MSU.

The rest of my family (a Pitt family) and I agree with them from a football perspective would have rather Hoke been hired at Pitt.

Hoke has to ask himself this question, "Would I rather be a HC at a school with medium expectations and 30,000 fans at games, our would I rather be a DL coach at a powerhouse and 100,000 fans?"

Me personally, I'd rather be the DL coach at Florida, Texas, Alabama, USC, Penn State, etc. than the head coach at Pitt, Virginia, UConn, Wyoming, Ball State, etc.

this will never happen, but I would love it if a group photo like this:

would be taken while Bump is still with us.  To my knowledge, it's been done twice before: once with the above group of Harry Kipke, Fritz, Bennie, Bump and Bo, and another time with (correct me if I'm wrong) Bump, Bo, Mo, and Lloyd.

Wouldn't it be great if Jim Hackett could gather Bump, Mo, Lloyd, RichRod, Brady and Jim Harbaugh in the stands at the 50 yard line for a similiar shot?

I'm guessing that the tension between Lloyd and Richrod might prevent them from lining up next to each other in such a photo.

Man, I've always loved that photo. You've got Harry Kipke - who played for Yost and coached Jerry Ford - connected to Bo. So you've basically got Yost to Bo in that photo.

Brilliant idea. I'd love to see your idea come to fruition. The only guy with a schedule conflict next year will be RichRod, so let's do it during Arizona's bye week.

If Hackett can talk Harbaugh into coming back to Michigan to coach, he can talk RichRod into coming back for a picture.

On the subject of Fritz, my great uncle played basketball and baseball at the University of Chicago in the late 1920's. He was the captain of the baseball team his senior year. I found all his team photos on Ancestry.com with Fritz Crisler, the AD. At first I thought he must have been the coach because he was the only "adult" or coach-like figure in the pictures, but perhaps that was just how it was back then - no coach in the picture.

I will send Jim Hackett an email and/or letter suggesting it after the hiring of Harbaugh is made official.  Maybe the new JMFH has enough magic left over to bring all parties together.  After all he's already done, I sure wouldn't call it impossible if in his hands.

I don't think Bump was fired.  I believe he simply told Canham he wanted to leave coaching and go into administration.  He soon went on to become Iowa's AD.

I could maybe see Hoke pose for a photo like that, but really doubt RichRod would agree, and I don't really blame him.  He probably never wants to come back.

This year, for his sake I hope he gets in somewhere, but it looks like head coach at any school in Div 1 is out. He very well may get a gig as DC or DL coach somewhere in NCAA, maybe he can use his brother Jon Hoke or his ties with John Harbaugh to get an NFL gig. In all likelihood, he'll get a gig as Head Coach of a mid major next year.
