From Harbaugh himself: "I'm not confirming anything or denying anything"

Submitted by FrankMurphy on February 1st, 2022 at 7:59 PM

I'm not sure why this hasn't been picked up more widely, but the Twin Cities Pioneer Press somehow managed to get an interview and a quote from Harbaugh himself, albeit not a substantive or informative one. He also said, “I appreciate (the question) but please don’t be offended,” before declining to discuss the Vikings situation.

The "neither confirm nor deny" line is as close as you can get to an actual confirmation. And interviewing for the job means that he would take it if offered. Per Chris Balas (I think), Harbaugh has also apparently given his assistants the week off.

So... yeah.

I know it's raw right now, but the way Ohio has been recruiting and playing, anyone short of Nick Saban wasn't going to do much better than Harbaugh.

He gave it his all, remember jumping into swimming pools with recruits, Signing of the Stars, taking them on international trips, all the satellite camps.

Thanks for the memories, a great 2021, and good luck with the Vikings coach.

Balas made a great point on his podcast with Doug Skene.  The NCAA is out of whack.  Schools like Texas A & M will find patrons willing to pay 6 figures for a kid's high school art project but everyone is up in arms if he wants to run a satellite camp.

He tried, he was damn creative, but the southern football apparatus won't allow a level playing field.

Honestly, I don't think Saban, Meyer, Smart, **anyone** could raise us to OSU's level within a decade or more, unless the systemic (AD/booster/admissions culture/regulations) issues were to be *significantly* relaxed.

[Some might argue that this season already establishes us "at OSU's level." I'm talking about maintenance level. I respect the hell out of the 2021 campaign and do consider the "42-27 represents a new day" hypothesis plausible, but it still seems more likely to me that moving forward (for the next ~5 years), we are more likely to be at the 0.200 win% range than the 0.600 (or even the 0.400) win% range versus those guys.]

We literally had the absolute max of what we could have to beat OSU this year and we probably still go at best 5-5 if we played them 10 times. We had two first round picks at the most important defensive position; one who was the best DE in the nation.

Offensively we had just enough with an experienced OL and a bellcow RB with just enough to keep them honest over the top. Despite how well we did this year vs them, it was not sustainable. We weren’t stopping Stroud, Henderson, JSN, and whoever else they have in the wings next season without bookends like Hutch and Ojabo.

It took a once in 20 years DE combo to be just enough to beat them at Home.

This isn’t because of Jim, just reality. We are further from OSU long term in 2022 than we were in 2016; even despite beating them this year.

Yeah I'm with you. Don't get me wrong there are some nuggets of truth but holly crap the dire comments. Michigan will be fine with NIL. Maybe they won't be a top 5 program in NIL, maybe they won't be the next Alabama....but the have a chance to be this years Michigan over and over and over especially if they continue the recent trend of hitting on the QB position.

Michigan is going to have to have an elite qb and a couple elite guys at key positions. If they do that they can replicate this year.

Further, if they can hold this class together and have a great year this year you can continue to build the program. There is a new jumping off point now and they can be successful.

Yeah, he's gone. And that's alright, the NFL is obviously where he wants to be, so he should go.

It creates a turbulent situation for Michigan, but Jim Harbaugh could not control when he received an offer he was willing to accept from an NFL team. Michigan will be fine. He did some good things over the past year to put Michigan in a good spot to move on without him.

Michigan has some decisions to make as to whether or not they want to try and maintain some level of continuity with what Jim has put in place for 2022, or roll the dice with whats left in the carousel and prepare for what should be a relatively minor program remodel with a coach from outside the program.

Will be interesting to see which direction they decide to go.

As an outsider, it’s been obvious he was moving on since he returned his borrowed DC.   IMO, he got the salary cut he rightfully deserved, and that public shaming set the current course of events.   If you cut my salary in half and it was public, deserved or not, I’d say FU to my employer as well once I had the opportunity.   JH was fortunate to benefit from a borrowed DC, extra Covid eligibility/upper classmen  heavy team, and perfectly  parlayed those circumstances and talent into a CFPB team. He set the high water mark, with limited opportunity to surpass it.  Now he can tell Warde “FU”.  If the rumors are true, and the coaches have been given a week off starting with a half-day on national signing day, the writing is on the wall.  The biggest question now is how to avoided a Hoke type of hire.

If there is one lesson I’ve been reminded of in my life and work it’s that change is death. Some are more poignant than others and, assuming this pans out (and tbh even if it doesn’t because he clearly wants to go which will hurt stability, recruiting, etc no matter what). Hope for the best for him and that UM is able to keep things on an even keel.

Ugh, my clarification didn’t get published for some reason

My point was actually that I think all change is a kind of death, and by mourning things such as moving away, graduating, etc. we get practice mourning the “big stuff”.  I often talk with patients about this when they find themselves saddened about various transitions in their lives, even ones that appear to be positive on net.

As such, I was reflecting on that fact, and not suggesting any sort of equivalence with actual death.

The whole letting the staff off for the week seems absurd - even if signing day isn’t what it once was. At what point does Warde just push him out and bring in a new coach instead of letting Harbaugh continue to test the waters when you know he wants to be in the NFL again.

Warde Manuel doesn't have the horsepower to push Jim Harbaugh out the door, no matter what he thinks about it.  But he's going to gain a lot of power here shortly - because he'll own the next football coach of the University of Michigan.  If that guy is successful, Warde will own Ann Arbor.  If he's not, Warde will get run out of town.

Well Warde has certainly gotten a good amount of practice given he's already replaced the hockey and basketball coaches. Football is the only thing left.

Has any other AD in Michigan history hired all 3 major sports coaches in 1 term? Let's hope Warde goes 3 for 3.
