Guessing MBB '16-17 Minutes Distribution

Submitted by Lanknows on

Early guess at next year's rotation/minutes compared to this year.

Guards:  Watson and Simpson should push for significant backup roles.

Guard 15-16 minutes 16-17 minutes
Walton 33 31
Abdur-Rahkman 26 28
Simpson - 16
Watson - 5
Dakich 3* <1

Forwards:  Chance a current 5 attempts transition to the 4, but that's never been Beilein's way.  Robinson's role should expand unless Dawkins or Chatman make a leap.

Forward 15-16 minutes 16-17 minutes
Irvin 32 33
Robinson              28 30
Dawkins 17 12
Chatman 5* 4
Wilson or Wagner - 1

Center:  Could go a number of ways depending on player development and imminent attrition, but expect another 3-man rotation once things get settled.  Guesses of the moment:

  • Doyle steps up.  Despite seeming to regress this season, most Beilein bigs improve with experience and Doyle's the only veteran physically suited for Big Ten play.
  • Donnal's role decreases. While he's made major strides to become a competant all-around player, physical limitations remain against legit opponents.
  • Teske plays.  He'll be raw and not strong enough yet, but a 7 foot/240 pound shot-blocker is exactly what Michigan needs.
  • Someone has to leave and it's probably either Wagner or Wilson (no info, just a personal guess). Whoever sticks will be used situationally at the 5 while being groomed for a role at the 4 the following year.
  • Davis red-shirts before emerging as a fan favorite in '17-18.
Center 15-16 minutes 16-17 minutes
Doyle 13 17
Donnal 19 12
Teske - 8
Wagner or Wilson 11* (both)        3
Davis - -

*Minutes adjusted to account for DNPs.

Just re-read your comment. Don't ever say you feel sorry for me you arrogant fuck. Calm the fuck down and quit being condescending. Maybe you are drunk because you make no fucking sense. You have nothing to feel sorry towards me about, I assure you, really....

BTW, your attempt to become an "informed" poster on here is pathetic. You are like the grown up WD.

But Michigan did in 2016. Simpson is top 100 recruit.  Teske and Watson fit the system perfectly.  There's no rational reason Beilein hasn't recruited more guys like Teske, but it's a sweet relief that he finally did.

The '14 and '15 classes were bad, and the team sunk down accordingly because Caris, Mitch, Horford, and Spike weren't around to paper over the recruiting failures.

The '16 class is good, and they will help right away, but the the team will be veteran-filled for the first time in years next year.  All upperclassmen starting lineup.  Experience can make up for talent. I believe the last team that had this many seniors won a big ten title, with less talent than the '16-17 team will have.

If they were not gifted Earvin Johnson being born in their city, no one would've recognized MSU's basketball program until 1999.

We have enough facilities, exposure and history to recruit with the elite programs.  There's no excuse for not landing top 10-15 recruiting classes every year when you have a NCAA runner up and Elite Eight in back-to-back seasons and guys going to the league.  Beilein has to raise the level of his recruiting to match the level of his coaching.

But there's a lot of people who feel that Michigan is a football school only and kind of just want Michigan to be a fun mid-major type that can occassionaly unearths some hidden gems to make the sweet 16 once in a while.

These people tend to rail about how dirty bball recruiting is and how we can't and shouldn't compete in that world...as if fball recruiting was clean.

One things for sure...Chatman better develop a jump shot or Wagner better work on his lateral quickness, because I'm sick and tired of watching Zak Irvin getting bullied in the post by opposing 4's. If Beilein wants to run this system he needs to go out and get a legit stretch 4. He has to stop masquerading guards as post players on defense.

It's simple math and I don't get why Beilein can't figure it out. Beilein will take his 40% three point shooting "power forward" against the other teams 60% power forward because he thinks it evens out. On paper it does. 4-10 from three equals 12 and 6-10 from two equals 12. The difference is, a 6'6" guard going up against a 6'9" real forward is not going to shoot 40% from getting beat up so bad, probably closer to 30%. Meanwhile, the 60% shooting forward is closer to 70% thanks to all the easy looks he gets being guarded by the smaller weaker player. Suddenly that's 9 points vs 14 points instead of a wash at 12. Throw in the center position where Michigan is almost always in a net negative and it explains quite a bit.

That's his system.

It's not going to stop.

He's had great success with it.

If anything, Beilein's efforts to recruit stretch 4s need to end. He's awful at it - most of them end up converting to undersized 5s or transferring.  Beilein needs to recruit legitimate centers and then embrace the fact that his teams are better with guards.  4 out/1 in.  Not 3 out /1 in and then one tweener who can't defend at any position (or shoot well enough to make the opposition pay).

If we add a legit stretch four it helps us with rebounding and defense as well as spacing the floor on offense. We're never going to improve defensively if we keep trotting out these same type of lineups. The good teams in basketball have length and athleticism, we are lacking SEVERELY in both of those categories.

FWIW, I have a close family friend who watched both Simpson and Trey Burke play in high school and said he thinks Simpson is better now than Burke was as a senior in high school. I think he'll be the real deal

Is Walton bad? I mean when you compare him to a national MOP of course he's not going to add up.

I don't think Walton is the problem. We get nothing from a post - when we do, we play well.

We rely on walk-ons and overachieving players to contribute in big ways.

To me Walton is not bad. But he is not good either. He is a middle of the road Big Ten Point Guard that was probably a little overrated out of high school. It says a lot about our team that he is our best rebounder, but his inability to hit shots has taken us out of three games this year.

You expect that kid who played against Michigan State a few years ago to show up, and before you know it, you look up and Walton is 0-7 from the field and we are down 12. It's just frustrating for a fringe top 30 recruit.

You would think we would learn not to write freshmen and sophomores off because they aren't superstars, but here we are....

by his RS freshman year. Was a huge reason for the bump in team performance that year along with Morris coming into his own.  Morgan mostly stayed the same player his four years, with a bump in FG% in 5th year thanks to an insane offense that got him super easy looks off the PnR. Wasn't really anything he did.

The Donnal "leap" this year is the list.  And it ends there.
