Gavin Wimsatt Named Starter for Rutgers This Weekend

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on November 1st, 2022 at 11:15 PM

MSU week is over, so I decided to look forward and learn about this weekend's opponent for Michigan.

Looks like Schiano named Gavin Wimsatt the starter for Saturday night (SIAP).

He started last Saturday at Minnesota (Rutgers lost 31-0), but he was knocked out of the game.

His numbers...well, they aren't good, but they do run him a little bit, so Michigan will have to play sound defense.

Unrelated random thoughts:

I originally was looking to see if this was a game where JJ can go off. While he could, this actually seems like a game where you continue to feature Corum. At least, by the numbers. Sorry to those who hate our boring offense.

Rutgers' defense isn't terrible. Offensively, they struggle. Hoping for a MONSTER game by our defense. Multiple turnovers.

Last, in looking at Rutgers defensive numbers, I came across Nebraska. I'll be disappointed if JJ doesn't throw for 325+ against the Huskers. That pass defense is...YIKES! That has to be JJs true coming out party. Give Corum a rest before the final two regular season games.

I mean it's a game against Rutgers after 4 days of endless drumming about a terrifying event having to do with that team ~69 miles north west of us. I do not expect perfection from a post, our team, or anyone anymore. Name him the started, plus one. Name him a sharter, plus two. Name him a starter, plus three.

He suffered from 4 or 5 drops. Either way you can see his potential for a couple dimes on intermediate passes and normally he would run. Under the new OC they didn't do any RPOs or designed runs which was weird and I think really limits him.

Defense for Rutgers is good, maybe not elite but pretty good. Their secondary is pretty solid, the weakest part of their unit is probably LB like Michigan. Aaron Lewis has turned into a really good player, he's good against the run and has a bit of pass rush.

The way Michigan plays probably matches up well against Rutgers since Michigan likes to just slowly breakdown the opponent and turn them one dimensional. Rutgers defense usually holds up pretty well until the lack of offense starts to slowly break them down a bit. Weirdly Rutgers has the worst redzone defense in the country, so maybe Michigan will have better success there.

Sadly I don't think the coaches are going to let JJ do his thing until OSU.  After this past weekend I am convinced.  I had high hopes that JJ would break the single season passing touchdown record if he became the starter this year but that ship has sailed.  He would need Something like fifteen more passing touchdowns over rest of the season to do it.  Not going to happen the way the plays are called.

It's not so crazy if these opponents look at our redzone tendencies and decide it's best to concede yards between the 20's all day long and save your tricks/changups for the redzone.  I'm personally of the opinion that the RZ woes are a bit of conservative play calling combined with some bad luck and it will probably be fine, but I'm not shocked teams are playing us this way.

I’m starting to get a bit worried about giving Corum 30 carries a game each week… the next 2 weeks would be a good time to give him a rest and let JJ get live game reps. If OSU decides to stack the box, you can’t just turn your passing game on all of a sudden. Live game reps are crucial.

This game, like Indy 2021, gives us a chance to work on RZ offense. Last year, the waggle was successful for at least 1 TD, if not 2. I know we miss All, but the other TEs can step up.

Wash, rinse, and repeat vs. Nebraska.

The Biggies are Illinois and then Ohio.

This poor sob doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell against our defense. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make it to halftime.

I for one really enjoy our boring offense. Wish it was humming a little better in the red zone, but the consistent success just dominating opposing defenses is like watching the siege of Carthage.

I'm interested to see how the team responds from the events of the past few days.  Will they sleep walk a bit or will they play angry?  I'm leaning toward the latter.

Just killing the man's Heisman hopes!

Also, versus Rutgers,  we're going to have to run the ball.

So that's probably 8 more carries for Edwards and 2 for Stokes.

But you just took your best pass blocker and your best short-yardage guy off the field. In addition to your best RB and offensive player as a whole (I'd argue the best player on the entire roster).

Rutgers, the way they play...we've got to run the ball.

Nebraska on the other hand, they stack against the run no matter the opposition. Let JJ throw 30-35 times.

We always make in-game adjustments, so if it is warranted that Corum totes the rock more then he will. I don't think it will be necessary but we shall see. As far as the Heisman goes, we are trying to win a Title/s so that trumps everything and I know Corum feels the same way. Exactly Carolina Blue!!!

Don't know if you're /s about his Heisman hopes, but Hooker's going to win it if UT beats UGA on Saturday. If they lose and he plays a so-so game, then it's highly possible that the winner of The Game will also win the Heisman. Either way, he's allowed to have a couple run of the mill 100 yard games with a TD or two before Illinois shows up.

Putting a lot of value in the Heisman seems very late 90's where fans lived and died on AP/Coaches polls as well.  It just doesn't matter much.  It doesn't go to the best player in college football at least 50% of the time.  Who you play for and how your school and the media campaign for you is a huge part of it.  If Corum goes wild against OSU it will help him way more than 175 yards vs 80 yards against Rutgers.

After getting a 30 point lead by half time. I think JJ needs to work on his accuracy on those 30+ yard throws. Its not just going to all come together in Columbus. He needs more practice. If he could improve those throws, I think we will beat OSU. OSU will be trying to stop the run game.

i was in the big house the last time we played rutger.  we all thought it would be a walk-over.  not so. up 20-3 at half, we literally had to hang on for the win, and we were outgained substantially at our own place.

  • Total Yards

    • RUTG   352
    • MICH   275
  • Possession

    RUTG  32:37   MICH  27:23

  • 1st Downs

    • RUTG    21
    • MICH    15

would love to get out in front early and rest starters, particularly corum who has been carrying the ball too much for my tastes.
