Fitz staying at NU

Per @chengelis, Joe schad's Joe schad reports that Pat Fitzgerald is staying at NU.

Resume panicking as normal. I guess a lot of folks didn't want him anyway but, fwiw.

Is it common practice for every perspective coach to pretend they are not on DBs radar and say they have no interest in what is supposed to be the biggest coaching job in college sports?????  I guess I didn't realize that the best way to get your dream coaching job was to turn a cold shoulder or play hard to get.  Or perhaps maybe it's possible that all the great coaches out there just don't have the energy to come in and clean up the mess?  Either way, I'm not getting a warm fuzzy from anything that has happened or anything that has been said.

I will also comment that Derek Dooley was 17-20 as a head coach before Tennessee hired him. They went 6-7 with a shot to hell roster and Dooley appears to have them on the right track. Hoke isn't the end of the world and we may have to wait and see what happens. How they look on paper isn't everything. I would be much happier with a Gary Patterson or a Gruden (if he brings in a strong staff) than Hoke, but the amount of over the top, hyperbolic reaction to Hoke is not only pointless but also relatively unfounded.

No one wants to hear this, but Hoke's latest contract extension was never signed, meaning the Michigan buyout is 1 million as opposed to 1.5 million.http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jan/06/new-hoke-contract-sdsu-not-yet-formalized/

I love Brian's site, but when it gets wonky(as it has been) Aztek Mesa really seems like the best supplimental spot to get info.  They might be more obsessed than we are.

Okay, look at the facts.

- DB said something in the meeting that "lifted a weight" off the players shoulders. My guess is that it was something along the lines of "we'll be pursuing a few coaches from top ten programs."

- Stoops runs an offense that is "adaptable" to the players he has around him.

- Stoops is from Youngstown, Ohio and therefore understands the history of Michigan and the rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State.

- He just won a BCS game with Oklahoma (finally) and may now feel ready to move on.

- Brandon said he had "unexpected" candidates. This would certainly be unexpected and high profile enough to energize the fan base and players.

- With Nebraska and Colorado leaving the Big 12 the conference is about to become much less high profile and Stoops might be thinking a bolt to the new B1G would be an upward move.

Just food for thought.

Stoops earning breakdown past yr and next 2 yrs. I included 2012 for completeness. Also note he gets an $800K bonus at the end of the '11 season. Basically, it would take mad cash to match what he's already getting:

2010: $3.875 million
$250,000 (base salary)
$2.925 million (unrestricted private funds)
$700,000 (stay bonus payable in July 2011)
2011: $4.875 million
$250,000 (base salary)
$3.125 million (unrestricted private funds)
$700,000 (stay bonus payable in July 2012)
$800,000 (payable following the 2011 season)
2012: $4.275 million
$250,000 (base salary)
$3.325 million (unrestricted private funds)
$700,000 (stay bonus payable in July 2013)

Mike Stoops is at Arizona, but that doesn't seem high profile enough (even though he's done a good job there). I think the fact that Bob Stoops' agent went to Michigan means that the conversation has to be had - even if it is just a beleaguered alumni trying to help his alma mater more than his client.

They just went a little further on the BTN - said Michigan asked for permission to talk to Fitzgerald and he said no - I would write him off at this point.

I also don't see why head coaching experience is vital. Stoops had none before Oklahoma. Muschamp has none and anyone who thinks he wouldn't be good enough for Michigan is crazy. That line of thinking doesn't seem as relative as one might think it is. You eliminate some promising possibilities.

No one's getting anything (offers) until Harbaugh's gone. The folks that railed on RR from the beginning and then ran him out of AA will have a shit if someone else gets an offer before JH is a done deal somewhere else. As soon as he's gone and the sweat balls start to accumulate, the offers (gulping and scrambling) will begin. We need someone with the balls to look at those 'alumni' morons in the face and say blow me...politely...just like they do in the real world.

I feel like DB's press conference the other day was in part a performance to appease the powers that be that we were in hot pursuit of JH and making it clear that he was not reciprocating and that a deal was unlikely to happen.  DB was setting (lowering) everyone's expectations.

SF offered a 4.5 mill contract.  Miami reportedly offering 7-8 mill.  If im DB just offer the 10 year 50-60 mill contract to JH.  If he says no.  Let us know then.

To those who have always championed the belief that "you should/could have just posted [this information] in one of the other CC threads that already existed," enjoy this time.  Only a handful of new threads per day, each with more than 200 patchwork comments about nothing and everything.  This is your dream realized.

This has probably been discussed numerous times, but I would like to get some words in in regards to the coaching search.

If I was DB, with Fitz and Harbaugh(?) out of the picture, I would pay Jon Gruden NFL type money to get him here. He is a stand-up guy with a ton of X's and O's knowledge. He is from the midwest (Sandusky, Ohio) and would be able to recruit anywhere in the country with his NFL ties and likable personality. Any recruit would want to play for an established NFL coach that can build them up for NFL readiness. He could also bring in a group of former or current NFL coaches for his assistants, not to mention his brother who coaches in the UFL and is an offense guy. He could make UM a power-house and NFL factory again in just a few years.

It may be a pipe-dream, but please chime in.

I would think he would hire his brother as the O coordinator (if he could pull him from the UFL). You gotta think that the M job would be intriguing to JG though... Not every day you have a chance to coach a historic school to a NC and take an NFL team to it's first super bowl. He would go down as a current day Jimmy Johnson, just winning the super bowl and NC in a different order.

Doesn't seem that I have enough points to post a new thread so I will just add this here.

Back when Scott was here I always thought that some day he'd be here as an OC, DC or even HC down the road.  He's had a couple years at OC with Florida and Urban is leaving.  So here's my idea.  Scott is obviously too young and not ready for HC duties but if DB decides to go Hoke or Miles or some other 50+ coach, then bring in Scott as OC.  When Hoke or Miles are ready to hang it up or get fired, Scott is your man.

Just a thought.

I 'm not suppose to say anything publically yet BUT i think it's time to let everyone know that I've been chosen as the new HC.  I'm a "Michigan man" (class of 81), recruited for M from 91-94 here in Ohio and was an assistant High School football coach from 2000-2004.

In other words my resume is about untouchable.  Welcome me aboard....I'm rested, ready and raring to go!

100% cosign. Not only is Chucky not coming here, he's not ever going to be on DB's short list, nor is Dungy.

If Meyer hadn't retired due to family and health reasons I don't think he'd be an impossibility, but he did, so he is.
