Damn I lived near the corner of Hill + State for 2 years and went there a ton.  You'd think a business like that, with a built in customer base, would never close.

I lived around the corner in grad school (1983-84).  Loved the place for its character.  I remember running into Bill Frieder there and congratulating him on a recent basketball game.

Aside from beer, it was a newspaper stand with a wide range of magazines, but especially newspapers from all over the country.  In that sense, it really belonged in a prior time.

My brother, who was in school at UM in the 60s, told me that in those days the Blue Front sold more Sunday New York Times than any store outside the New York City area.  That was probably true back before the NYT was a national paper.

RIP, Blue Front.

The place also smelled. Would get my paper there though and head over to Ralph's Market next door... Someone mentioned Steve's Lunch earlier. THAT was a great place and a good place to literally rub elbows with UM athletes. Rightup there with Crazy Jims and Drake's for terrific experiences that younger Wolverines sadly will never experience.

http://michigantoday.umich.edu/a8404/  The comments in this article give one a flavor for how cool this place was. Grilled cheese like mom used to make, penny candy, home made hot cocoa all for incredibly low prices.  The wait staff dressed in retro uniforms. Ann Arbor's oddest collection of people would hang out in those real old booths, eating, reading, discussing politics, enjoying great jazz music or music from bygone eras. You felt like you were transported back in time! Very mellow compared to the coffee house hangouts of today probably because there were no laptops and iphones.

I wrote a check for a case of beer when I was an 18 year old freshman. The cashier asked for my ID, and as I reached for my fake, I immediately realized "whoops. Can't do that". So I told him I forgot my wallet. He said "Look, I know you're not 21 but I need to see your real license because you're writing a check." I have been forever grateful to that dude. Viva Blue Front.

I used to live on Arbor street right accross from Blue Front. They supplied many kegs for our house. Definitely don't know what I would of done from age 18-20 without Blue Front :/. You will be missed!!

my last visit there was prior to the first UTL game; taking the son and neice around campus with my brother.  Grabbed a sixer of something tasty; drank it on the porch of our old house on White Street.

Nooooo! I used to buy from there in undergrad, sometimes multiple shopping trips per day. They sold 40s to the homeless guy who once pooped in our keg bucket. One time I made out with a guy there and we got a free keg. I'll pour some Mickey's out....

A girl that smoked "cloves" cigarettes took me to Drakes the first time late at night. What a fucking awesome place and awesome girl. A2 is the ticket. Was? My dad would buy kegs at this place and then roll them down the street to their house! What are these kids doing now drinking cappuccinos! WTF! Pinball Petes is closed too. Close every fucking thing!

Visited the Blue Front a number of times during my UM days.  Even made aspecial trip there one time to buy a Sports Illustrated as there was something to do with Michigan on the cover (can't remember now what it was).    Sad to lose another iconic piece of the past.

I used to live across the street a couple separate times. Primo was the old Asian guy who owned it at the time (mid-late 90s). After I had been gone for a couple years, I stopped back in. He immediately recognized me and said, "Where you been? Sales down."

Ate at Pizza Bob's a couple years ago and was glad to see it still there. Used to be Pizza Bob's Uptown & Downtown back in my day. Couple doors apart.
