Despite the 75-62 loss to Wisconsin this afternoon, Michigan and Michigan State remain tied at 10-3 apiece atop of the Big Ten after Nebraska took down the No. 9 Spartans on the road 60-51.
Despite loss to Wisconsin today, Michigan remains tied for first in the Big Ten
Nebraska beat state.
Thank you sparty!!!
Hells to the yesssirrr!!! Let's make it a posbang... We need some happiness as fans today. Beat Staeee
Maybe the "Beat State" thread helped? Huge break for Michigan. Now win and take the title!
I can't wait til Sunday. Beat State.
Doesn't count because MSU didn't have Appling or Payne. They will never lose with those two.
Don't worry. The Dawson excuse is still available.
neither of us want the B1G title.
Well, we'll see who wants it less in a week. I think both teams will play well in Ann Arbor, but Michigan will rise to the occasion and win.
Hell yeah Nebraska!
As it's snowing in northwestern Virginia.
BTW, for those interested NBC Sports Network is showing the USA-Russia hockey game. 2nd period just started.
HUGE Break and takes the sting off a bit
Good to see but I'd like a little more breathing room. Team has got to step up if they want to win the Big 10 regular season title. It's a decent team, but they're just getting blown out by Iowa and Wisconsin, teams they beat before.
You can't win everygame and you can't play your best every game. It you can't handle not having breathing room don't watch. This is a race. THIS IS FUN.
if we play well and lose I can accept it. In our three losses we have played like crap and seem to be either playing complacent or getting worse the last couple weeks.
I would say races for titles are generally fun but it looks like we are trying to back in instead of winning the damn thing. Unfortunately, I have to believe given the way teams are playing right now that Iowa may be the favorite to win the conference.
Is turnovers. The defense is what it is, we are simply an average defensive team due to youth and lack of true rim protector (love what Horford and Morgan have given us, but we don't really have a Mutombo-esque shotblocker who can deter guards from finishing at the rim). Good offensive teams like Iowa and Wisconsin will put up points on us. Full stop.
What is unacceptable (and so uncharacteristic of this and other Beilein teams) is sloppiness. So many turnovers and quick shots yesterday, particularly in the first half. Stauskas and LeVert are good playmakers, but they are still 6'6" guys handling the ball quite a bit and sometimes this leads to turnovers. I think Walton needs to take charge and be the ballhandling safety blanket. If someone's in trouble, he's got to go to the ball and stabilize the situation. We also have to run mroe plays through him. After breaking out against O$U, I expected him to be more assertive against Wisconsin. Instead, he deferred to LeVert and Stauskas way too much.
Right now, this team looks like a four seed. Which is fine. If we can share the B1G Championship and return to the Sweet 16, it's more than safe to say that we will have sustained our momentum from last year and not taken a huge hit from the losses of Burke, THJ, and McGary. With the addition of recruits that are both uber-talented and very strong fits for Beilein's system as well as the (likely) return of McGary, incremental improvement from LeVert and a true escalation to star level for Walton, this team will be loaded AND experienced next year.
You don't go to (or support) Michigan to have fun, you go to win.
Unfunny/clever gifs gotta get a downvote.
We'd all like more breathing room, but if we look at the big picture, to be 10-3 right now is fantastic.
MSU's loss today was a game-changer. They really needed to be up a game in the standings by now. We now have only one more game against one of the top five teams in the conference (UM/MSU/Iowa/Wisc/Ohio) and it's at home, while MSU has three - two of them on the road. We now clearly have the easier remaining schedule of the two. If we win next Sunday, the outright title becomes a strong possibility, and even if we lose, a share is very much possible.
Yeah I said it in another thread. Nebraska needs to go at least 4-2 but if your team does that I think it definitely deserves a bid. I think .500 in conference and 18 total wins can get a team over the hump if the team is in one of the better conferences. Whether the Big Ten is the best when comparing top to bottom remains to be seen but it should be a top 3 conference.
Great win and thank you Nebraska for evening things up.
BTN, I salute you.
8) Nebraska (13-10, 5-6 B1G)
This week: Beat Ohio State (68-62); Beat Illinois (67-58)
Thing: This appeared on my television screen last night. On the Big Ten Network. For serious.
In case you can't read the top bar, it really does say "NCAA Tournament Resume." If the question is, “does a 15 or 16 win team with a single top-100 non-conference win and a 7-11 or 8-10 record in conference make the NCAA tournament?” the answer is “Trololololo.”
Still, the fact that the BTN can even run such a graphic shows how far Tim Miles has taken this team. And how much peyote is apparently available in BTN Headquarters.
Thing they are like: An NIT tournament team, which, hey, that’s not terrible if you’re Nebraska.
Haha why the peyote reference?
But I thought the previous thread was a jinx fersure!!!!11!
We got bailed out big time. Cheers to that.
Unbelievable that this stuff keeps on happening, to think that we are still one game away from taking the lead in the B1G again is crazy considering how this season has been.
a few weeks ago i had a sparty fan say we aren't that good given that we only beat NE by one point in their building. i said, look out. NE is better than you think, especially at home. and sparty ends up losing to them in their own house. hilarious.
Can I get that upvote back?
I neg'd you just to show I got the message.
State has looked just terrible for a while now.
I would really love to go take the game in person next Sunday, but the prices on the secondary market are so overpriced it's rediculous.
Have you tried the tertiary market?
market's prices are merely ridiculous. Thats not the same level as full-blown rediculous.
The texts I was receiving from my Sparty family members stopped rather quickly today!
The Big Ten Tourney is going to be fantastic.
So, it appears that each time we happen to lose in conference play, the Spartans will step up and lose a game just to get back at us. I will say that this strategy could very well favor us in the long term. The Big Ten Tournament, at this point, is going to be an interesting tournament, to say the least.
I hope he can recruit to the new facilities and the B1G can count on another good basketball team in the conference.
Hopefully we can win either the regular season or tournament big ten title. The regular season title means a lot more to me however and I believe that's th consensus.
I'd much rather win the regular season title.
I would slap anyone who preferred a tourney title, and I believe that's the consensus
that I care about. The B1G tournament is only good for bubble teams trying to boost their resume.
I will say this that a strong conference tourney run could help this team go up a seed line perhaps which is important. So don't hate on the conference tournaments.
on how to slow down Sparty's inside game. Not sure if we have the personnel to execute the Husker's plan, but at least food for thought. Here's hoping Coach B can ID a defensive strategy and get it in place in the next six days.
Any Michigan fan who posts on the game thread ripping the team and is happy till the next game thread. ENJOY THE RIDE!!!!!!
I still think we are going to lose 2 more times
Well I don't. So there.
The end of our schedule is immensely easier than State's. MSU still has Iowa, at OSU, at Purdue, Illinois and at UM.
Michigan has MSU, Minny, at Purdue, at Illinois, and Indiana.
A big eff you to the Spartans. Go Blue.
Looks like both teams were caught looking ahead but damn Nebraska is a legit tournament contender. They should only need 3 more wins to get them in and it's manageable
Don't forget that Sparty has another game before they come to Ann Arbor. Hopefully they're looking ahead again for that one!
We've had several wake up calls: Today, Indiana, Iowa. Hopefully we come out with intensity from the opening tip.
How many wake up calls do we need? Michigan keeps hitting the "snooze" button like I do on a Monday morning.
Top to bottom the B1G is the best conference. Still in first!
Most teams winning big road games and then losing home games. Teams going through winning streaks and then losing streaks. Now the leaders are coming back to the pack. Iowa is back in the race. Who is going to finishing strong and win this thing?
Iowa will lose to Wisconsin and MSU. It's still a battle between the mitten schools
... taken with a grain of salt...
The announcer discussed the departure of two NBA players and Mitch's injury - during the first half. He then discussed how well we are playing this year. His conclusion was that Michigan is now an elite program.
Nice to hear and I feel great about our future.
Raftery >>>>> Vitale
I have always liked Rafferty. He even gave Nik "the kiss" when he banked one in.
Holy shit. This is amazing. I didn't even bother checking the score of the MSU game because I assumed they would have won. Awesome.
Just wish Michigan wasn't so bi polar. Coach B better have these guys ready for Staee. They will be out for revenge.
Can Nebraska play themselves into the tournament? They are 6-6 / 14-10. The rest of their schedule is pretty weak - they could easily go 10-6 / 18-10, in which case I think they get in. That will give the conference 7 bids ... assuming Minney holds onto a spot.
Their rpi is 52 and sos is 17. If they can get to 10 conference wins, I think they're definitely in. 9-9 and they are in the mix.
Oh good. We can't take control of our own destiny but at least we can count on the rest of the conference to screw up.
? We have control of our own destiny.
Who cares about winning the Big Ten by default.
We need to take care of business and improve in every game. We appear to be incapable of playing defense. It seems every game somebody from the opposition lights us up and we have no answer for it. If we shoot poorly or our offense is not great we lose. It was embarrassing today. No adjustment in play or intensity until halftime. I would have hard fouled Kaminsky early aka the piston bad boy era. We need to play with a defensive edge like MSU. We need to put a hand up in the face of every player to try to disrupt their offense.
I see no run in either the Big Ten or NCAA tournament. Whatever momentum we had is now gone.
Stauskis is no longer a consistant offensive threat.
Walton and Irvin were a combined 1 of 13 today.
Someone earlier stated that neither Payne or Appling were playing today for MSMoo. Payne was playing for MSU today. Appling didn't, but he is mediocre for MSU. His poor play has helped MSU lose to us consistantly over the past 3 years. Their recent problem has been Gary Harris. He has sucked their last 3 games.
Of course against our poor defense he lit us up for 27.
I care about winning the Big Ten by default. I would care if we won the Big Ten because every other team was suspended for a month for felonious douchebagery. I still agree with your criticisms.
This is one of the worst responses I've read. Appling and Payne both played today although Appling was limited. Also why on earth would we want to have MSU's defensive intensity? They just lost to Nebraska!!
Pull it together. What record did you think we were going to have through 13 games? Last year, IU won the league outright at 14-4. The year before, there was a three-way tie at 13-5. We're 10-3, pretty much right at that pace - and we've played almost all of our tough games.
Yes, we've gone through a tough stretch, but that's normal. We went through one last year too. If you think teams go through a neat little linear projection from bad to good over the course of a season, you can't have watched that much college basketball.
Two weeks in a row. We fall from the Empire State Building and State swoops down and saves us. No, two weeks in a row we fall, State says "hey that looks like fun" and nooooooooo.
NEBRASKETBALL? MORE LIKE NEBRASKETBRO AMIRITE?!?!
"Spartans Will" ... NOT!
