Miller right now. If he was at center it puts Braden back to 2nd team and we likely have a much better line.

I'm almost positive that play is supposed to go outside of Kalis. All the blockers are sealing off the edge and Smith just runs right into two unblocked guys that should have been non-factors if he'd just run up behind Kalis's left hip.
September 7th, 2015 at 3:15 PM ^
If your theory is Kalis was designed to pass right by that to sweep outside, I have no evidence to contradict that, but it would certainly be going the long way to get 1 crucial yard.
Just sayin'...

but it does look like both the fullback and RG are going to the outside. After watching the play in slow mo, if Smith goes outside he just might go the distance.

Drake Johnson takes that to the house.

I thought I saw the same thing on 4th and one and re-watched 4-5 times right after the play. I'm fairly certain if he followed the block to the outside as he should have done, it would have been a first down at the minimum.

This makes it clear that Smith got antsy and cut up when he should have stayed outside. He is not fast enough to be thinking he can make the corner. No question one of the other backs gets 5+ on this to the outside.
I love seeing this on film as it makes for easy teaching for the coaches. This is about as obvious as it gets that a well blocked play cannot prevent a back from cutting into a LB.
Interesting to see the UFR when it is out as I am not sure where the breakdowns were. Line may not have played as bad as it felt, and I do think Utah's front 7 are solid.

I agree on it going outside -
but those two guys would have been non-factors if Braden didn't totally blow his block by leaning on the dude.
September 7th, 2015 at 1:01 PM ^
but we shouldn't need him for OSU or UNLV. But for BYU, yes...they need to take the plunge and turn him loose. Whether he's still prone to re-injury is uncertain, but you've gotta play him sooner or later, and the way we looked against Utah, we need any spark to the running game we can get against defenses with a pulse.
September 7th, 2015 at 1:48 PM ^
I would say he needs to get out these once ready if you want him to get the bulk of the carries in conference play.
September 7th, 2015 at 12:38 PM ^
Who was holding? Both O'Neill and Rudock can both be dangerous in a fake situation in different ways, but with both listed with an OR I don't recall who had holding duty against Utah.

It was strange to have three very experienced seniors there play so inconsistently. Might be time to give Gedeon more snaps.
September 7th, 2015 at 12:57 PM ^
....or, you know, let the guy who has possibly the greatest NFL/NCAA track record in history and has a highly accomplished defensive coordinator make those decisions.
September 7th, 2015 at 1:19 PM ^
Nope, we should freak out and completely change the starting lineups because we lost a tough road game against a good team.

The crop of senior linebackers aren't explosive playmakers. A ton of their value is supposed to lie in steady play and excellent tackling. Gedeon seems like a higher level athlete and has turned some heads in limited snaps. Just saying I'd like to see him rotate in a little more.

That's fair.
Just seeing a lot of second-guessing by people based on one game. My comment is aimed more at the arm-chair quarterbacking going on as a general matter than your comment specifically.

Isn't #2 tight end a jump up for Ian Bunting from last Monday's depth chart? If so: ALRIGHT! If not: STILL HOLDING ON TO #2!

I hate to pile on a player, but god damn did he look awful. The guy runs routes in slow motion and falls over making the catch if the ball is even a little off. I'm just not sure what the coaches see out of him to warrant targeting him as much as they did.
September 7th, 2015 at 3:09 PM ^
he has some good blocking in the previous game. Unfortunately, that's not enough for a TE. HE probably should have changed his position any way, never be a reliable catcher.
There was a 3rd down play, he blew up the LB and was wide open, Rudock instead pass to Butt for a 3rd down conversion. Can't blame him, I would rather him to throw to butt who was coverred tight instead of a wide open Williams or Smith who dropped the ball frequently.

I was glad to see this too. A second recieving TE might be the quickest path to opening up this offense. If he can get going, and Drake Johnson comes back healthy, I see big things in store for this year.

I'm looking at these comments and I can't believe how many people question the depth chart. Hey, the best players played. I trust the coaches.

I understand he had a few nice games last year, but Maryland and Indiana were lower tier defenses last year against the run. And we seem to give OSU our best, coaches included, under Hoke. Plus he had only one catch last year. I would like to see him get out there just so we can understand if he's good or just a good matchup against bad defenses. Right now, I'm not convinced.
