Fourth down. Watching Elvis hand the ball off ... Big pile of dust at the line of scrimmage.. But what is this? Elvis still has the ball? Only man out there is #21 double covered. Elvis throw the ball out of bounds through the end zone ... But what is this streak of maize and blue lightning? That bolt of lightning meets the overthrown the ball in the ends zone. The crowd is deathly silent, until a zebra raises two arms overhead and ... Yeah. That's the best in my memory. |

I agree. It's not MSU winning that makes them a rival. It is because of the never ending smack talk that occurs from their fan base whenever they do win a game, even if was 5 years ago, whether it be in euchre, chess or football. Thus, little brother. |
| 16 weeks 6 days ago | My take on the Michigan Man |
You come to Ann Arbor to finish something, for most of us, it's an educational degree. For a few, it's preparation for professional sports. No matter what we choose to achieve, in Ann Arbor, we are scrutinized. We're told you're not smart enough. You don't work hard enough, you're not good enough at every turn. It's up to us to prove Ann Arbor wrong. But we never prove Ann Arbor wrong when we're there. We only prove Ann arbor wrong when we leave and go elsewhere. Once we are elsewhere. You still know that we were never smart enough for Ann arbor. We never worked hard enough for Ann arbor, we were never good enough for Ann arbor. But yet, we are damn good compared to the rest of the world. Ive met many from ivy leagues, to big west coast institutions. Many are full of style and no substance. They smile and are friendly, but cant get the job done. A Michigan Man was not built to play nice, or be full of style. We simply get the job done right. That's the Michigan Man, hardened in Ann arbor. Leaders and Best. |

The medical term for separated kneecap is: Lateral patellar dislocation. And if it pops back into place by itself, Transient lateral patellar dislocation. Yeah, the medial patellofemoral ligament/medial retinaculum is at least partially injured. Partial muscle tears of the vastus medialis are also commonly associated. There can also be articular cartilage injury, but let's hope not. It's not rare, rather pretty darn common. Looks like he was wearing a pretty hefty brace to try to prevent it from happening too. |

MM is the 1 tech NT of a 4-3 under defense. He's supposed to take on the double team. This D line setup should allow 1-1 match ups for the 3-tech UT and the WDE 5-tech. In other words, Van Bergen and Roh/Black should be the players that get the TFLs the DL in this type of alignment. |

I thought that I saw both Arizona and Arizona state run this diamond formation earlier in the year. Wasn't paying that much attention to it at the time... |

Wow. Bring back memories. I was there the first day Maize and Blue ever opened. As an undergrad back in the early 90s at the time, the SiZE of the sandwiches and the value made it a favorite. Zimgermans was too far away to go to on foot. Now when I go back to visit AA, I do prefer to stop by Zingermans. Zingermans taste is more unique and nostalgic. Maize and Blue is still... BIG and cheaper! |

I'm not sure vanilla is exactly what I'd like to see. Frankly, I'd like to see them practice their bread and butter plays. Whether that is off tackle left, draw, or read option it dosent matter. There are enough constraint play variations in play action and variations on the read option to keep defenses honest when it comes to ND. |

| 2 years 1 week ago | OSU, MSU, ND |
It all depends on what the rivalry is about. The OSU rivalry is the best of the best competition. It's for the Big10 championship. It's for the Rose Bowl bid. Thats the most important. The MSU rivalry is about yearly bragging rights. If you lose to MSU, every day in your life for the next year is painful because there will be daily reminders of the loss. The ND rivalry is all about who is #1 and #2 in Div I wins and win %. It's more about longevity legacy. |
| 2 years 27 weeks ago | Inverted scrape exchange |
I find this defense interesting. It's sort of an inverted scrape exchange. Instead of having the DE crash in on the RB and then scraping a LB, S, or CB to take the QB, it's the opposite. In a traditional scrape exchange, RR has had the QB make the bubble screen or post route as the third option ( or pitch option at WV). With the inverted scrape exchange, since they've forced a handoff - there's no third option..... Unless the offensive read could have been - pass first - bubble screen on the first play ( safety covering slot has a huge cushion), or slant/fade to short side on second play (single coverage). Thoughts???? |

I agree. The cornerstone of the offense is the QB. Denard, Tate, and Devin have not come close to reaching their ceiling as decision makers yet. The offense can be better. |

| 2 years 28 weeks ago | It's unfortunate that |
It's unfortunate that Internet bloggers can do more research and provide more accurate and accountable news than newspaper journalists these days. It used to be that you could not trust lawyers, politicians or car mechanics. Now we can't trust our journalists either. The journalism society needs to set up an police their own members as to what is ethical and what is appropriate. They need to report the facts, not make up a story. Otherwise they risk becoming a joke. If the free press is faking news to get sensationalism in sports - just think how inaccurate their reporting could be in other areas. |
| 2 years 28 weeks ago | Denard's development |
Sorry for bringing up an old thread - but I just finished watching the O film against Penn State. You know, I really think the off week was really good for Denard. There are some subtle things that he is now doing that I think show some continued development. He is 1) showing the ball to the defender on the zone read longer - so that he can get a better read. 2) looking off his primary receiver to move safeties away from then intended target 3) increasing the use of the pump fake also to move defenders. 4) made a few quick reads on throws that weren't open and just ran instead of forcing things. I think he just took himself up a level. |

This is why Denard us our best RB and QB. He sets up and runs off of blocks better than anyone else ive seen ... In many years at Michigan. The other things that make him a great RB is that he rarely takes a really big hit and he always seems to be able to fall forward after contact. |

| 2 years 31 weeks ago | I don't think the future can |
I don't think the future can be planned so neatly. In 2011, it's possible that Tate makes one heck of a comeback and becomes the starter again, and the talk will be about Denard moving to slot or RB. What if Denard adds second Heisman trophy in his junior year? He could easily leave early for the NFL draft. Or if one of the three suffers an on or off the field incident that ends his career? We should just let the three of them compete in practice, with the best one playing. If they're really good, all of them will be in the NFL in a few years. If not, I hope they use the opportunity to get their degree and represent M in whatever way they want. |
| 2 years 31 weeks ago | Hi, its my first post here |
Hi, its my first post here after reading for quite a while. I'm also interested a lot in this topic. Actually, the RR era has gotten me a lot more interested in the Xs and Os of football than ever before. From my best understanding, run defense in a 3-3-5 is considered gap sound, where there should be 1 man in each gap. The DL usually take slants, to get into gaps and try to force double teams. If the LBs read run, it's their job to get up into their gap and fill their gap, at the LOS. IDK, it seems like many times our LBs are meeting the RB 3 yards past the LOS, whereas they should be meeting them closer to the LOS. Or sometimes, it seems that there was no one where RB is at - which makes me wonder what happened to the player that was supposed to be there? Why was he in the wrong place? Did the DL not force double teams, and a blocker got to the LB? Did he go to the wrong gap? Did he read pass instead of run? Did he whiff on a tackle? Anyway, it would be nice to have a thread to break down these XsandOs - which is why I love some of the analysis on this board. Not sure if we really need the blame game though - Im sure there's plenty enough to go around in a loss. |
| 2 years 31 weeks ago | different fronts |
After watching the vid on defense vs. MSU, I noticed a lot of 4 man down fronts, in a 4-4 look. Can someone explain to me what is going on? Is it that Roh moves from an OLB position to DE, or is a spur/bandit being removed in favor of another DL? Does this change the "gap sound" 3-3-5 scheme? i.e. Does that mean that LBs need to read 2 gaps when we go to 4 down linemen like in a 4-3? Man, I wish the smartfootball.com website would take questions... |
